Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
I don't think dress codes have been broken. Stretched maybe, but not broken. We've adopted other styles however, and blended them in our own traditional attire.
The side of the kameez that isn't sewn together.
If not broken, then can these same models will wear these dresses in market like say Itwar Bazar or even at home in front of their parents / siblings?
Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
Like Mish said I'm sure they know that already..
Haifa Wehbe and others run around in literally half what they're wearing lol but I don't see many Arabs posting comments like "shameless bloody b*tches"...
Don't know why it's ok for our men to wear suits but if the women choose to go western it becomes controversial.. I'm sure plenty of celebs at that event wore salwar khameez and eastern wear as well anyway.. I don't see anything wrong with people dressing in different ways..
LOL they write much worse if you could read arabic and shes very scandalous in the middle east especially for her age of late 40s
Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
if you follow Pakistani TV dramas, every second drama is about extra marital affairs. sisters churaing sisters fiance / husband. It seems that after death of Haji Yaqoob, ARY also got green signal to show what they want. They have now their new channel 'ARY Zindagi' airing Indian and other foreign content 24/7. Hypocrites.
I have a question. Do people generally have any objection to this? Also, are other taboo bheaviours depicted or only adultery? Many complaints I've heard from people about western dramas is that they depict taboo behaviour and that Pakistani dramas are more "family friendly."

I don’t watch dramas, so I can’t say for certain. However, I’ve heard quite a bit about them. To be honest though, adultery, backbiting and ongoing family drama doesn’t seem very family friendly to me, so I’m not sure what people mean by this. ![]()

People did complained when they just started showing couples sitting on same bed in 1990s PTV dramas. Karb (a 1990s drama directed by Samina Peerzada) was controversial in that sense. Star Plus didn't get popularity back in dish antenna days in Pakistan, as they were showing extra marital affairs. Then came cable TV and Ekta Kappor 'k' series dramas, which were initially family oriented, social and family values (aadarsh) and people started watching them in Pakistan, but after 500+999 epiosdes these all dramas started revolving around extra marital affairs (A lady going to have relationship with her ex to have child to get bone marrow matching with child from same ex) and people kept on watching that. This is how our society accepted concepts which were more than taboo.

Interesting. I have another question, how do dramas go about depicting such behaviours? Is it actually shown or more implied? I have the feeling that the issue people have with foreign dramas is that they actually depict, often in rather explicit detail, the taboo behaviours they're dealing with, rather than implying them and letting the viewer draw their own conclusions.
Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
This brings me back to my first post in this thread. What is worn at these events are to sell the actors/actresses. They know, and the people watching these events know that this is not what is the norm, and this is what is worn only at these events, and they are wearing these clothes to bring attention to themselves, as well as the designers who designed these clothes. For the artists it’s a way to express their “individuality”. For the designers it’s an opportunity to show how versatile they are, and that they can design and produce whatever they set their minds to.
This might be a side, but I am happy that some of the clothes worn are at least produced and designed by Pakistani designers, and not something designed by a Western designer, just so they can show off how much money they have. At least they’re showing some Pakistani pride, however warped that expression of pride may be. For examplethis dress here is designed by Elan, vs another person wearing something from Zara or H&M

From what little dramas I've seen, most of the stuff is implied. And because it's implied in such a subtle way to me, most of the references fly over my head. But if I am to discuss that with someone else they seem to get it all, and even then some. =/
Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
Few drama like bol meri machili.. they were mature story wise… I will not say that all dramas are on adultery.. but these topics are part of stories in current age.. I never see such freedom back in the time when PTV/STN were few TV channels…
Re: The Lost war of Cultural and Social Values
But why individuality should be expressed by going against the norms of the society? Didn’t we have fashion icon back in 1970s to 1990s, when names like T-Jays were designing for actors and at same time, people went to their boutiques to demand for same attires.
I think creativity in Pakistan is now synonym to controversy or shock value. Thats why we got samples like Veena Malik and Mathira. They know easy forumla to get popularity in no time.

There is an improvement on this front as well. They have shown a wife asking her husband 'Are you a gay?' some 6-7 years back. A year back, they have shown explicit (blurred) scene of gay relationship in prime time (8 pm family drama) without any PG signs.

^How do you mean explicit? What did they show?
