I noticed that some muslim families have come to my home and before starting their meal have casually asked me where I buy my meat from. I understand that they may be concerned if I’m buying from the right halal sources.
I used to wonder why anyone would doubt that if you’re being invited by a muslim family until recently when some people we know mentioned they buy their chicken from a regular grocery store. Although the label says “halal” but there is no zabihah symbol…and then the same family buys kosher hotdogs when halal ones are readily available closeby. Now we think twive before eat anything at their place.
SO my question to you is that is it polite to ask that question or you just plain refuse a dawat invite from someone you’re not sure of?
Yes it's ok to ask,,.I wouldnt mind if someone ask me this...
All muslims families I know, they buy meat from same store where I buy...but I have one other friend once I went thier home first time she fried some chicken nuggets,I asked her where she bought them from?? She said from Sams, and she said they have halal chicken nuggets??? I was so confused :S
Before I eat any meat, I need to see the zabeeha being done personally, and I also want to make sure of the fiqah, madhab and personal character of the person doing the zabeeha.
While we eat chicken and stuff thats not halal/zabiha, the groceries are always halal/zabiha precisely for the reason that if someone comes over, I won't be a bad host nor will it be on my conscience.
Now if someone refuses to eat when I tell them I buy halal meat only simply because they know I'll eat chicken from outside....uhm...they're not coming over again.
I never ask anyone when Im sitting at the table ready to eat. I always try to bring it up in casual conversation ahead of time. I will mention something like "oh I go to this store to buy my meat because they are close to home/have other groceries I need/etc" something along those lines, and then will casually ask where they buy their meat from.
We have asked. We did not know the family very closely and I dont think they were offended.
I have asked about dessert too. If someone can eat chicken or beef that is not zabihah they may use regular gelatin as well.
A Halal logo at a restaurant or grocery item is always enough for me. Some of my more molvi cousins would start interviewing the guy at the pizza place..'where'd you get the chicken', 'how did you prepare the chicken', etc. As long as a Muslim tells you it's halal, it's halal for you.
I was thinking of the same. Some restaurants even go to the extent of putting a certificate from a famous halal meat shop that certfies that resturant buys the meat from that meat shop.
I was ondering if we could hang a similar certificate in our dining room at home

There is a big difference between Zabiha and halal! Doen't eman if someone eats "jhatka" meat they would be open to gelatin as well. For the record, I eat only zabiha hahal meat. But people in my area have taken it up a notch. Not believing the Muslim grocers when they say that it is zabiha. I think that's going too far.
One zabiha meat store has even put a picture of one of their Muslim employees doing zabiha of the goat.

yeah usually i look for the HFA approved sign. or the cert. hanging on the wall somewhere.. that should suffice.
I would never dream of asking a muslim if the food they are feeding me is Halaal, that is really offensive in my opinion. This veil wearing white revert girl turned up with her son to my nephews birthday party and started telling people the jelly sweets can't be halaal, we had to get the bags out of the bin to prove it, very uncomfortable situation.
As for resturants the halaal symbol is enough for me.
We have known this couple friend of ours for a while now... Muslim guy married to a polish girl, she has converted but just for the sake of marriage.... We always have potlucks etc...and we just expected them to be using halal stuff just cuz they are muslim too.... U just dont think otherwise... The guy prays and fasts... So why not right?
One day i was discussing protein menu with the girl for children in daycare... And she goes oh my son just eats waht they provide at daycare... Just no pork.... I was a bit surprised and upon further questioning... Found out that they dont think chickne needs to be halal...only meat..and ofcourse pork is forbidden.
Also...if the guy buys he makes an effort to buy halal meat but if the girl is doing groceries, she buys non halal... And if they eat out...halal or not, doesnt make a diff...
WHAT?!!!!
I dont know how u can fluctuate like tht... But i felt so shaken that for 3 yrs...we were eating non halal stuff at their place just cuz we thought hey...fellow muslims...ehy would it NOT be halal.
Now.... We just eat veggy stuff at their place or if we have a potluck...give her a salad to make... We dont talk religion cuz it always messes things up... So we havent taken this issue up with them.... Its just easier to not eat meat dishes. Or be clever and ask beforehand in a polite way... Like one time whe made duck and i was in doubt.. S i asked...oh wow...duck...i didnt know u could find halal duck here...to which he replied that it was indeed halal and could be found at blah blah shop...
So ya! U dont havta be a drunk high on coke muslim to be a non halal eater....
Ya man... It only came up cuz of our kids in the most random convo!imagine...bachay na hothay tho we still wouldnt know :d
Plus....they have been friends longer with the ppl that introd them to the group... 7 yrs...and even THEY didnt know this couple doesnt really always serve halal! Its just not a topic for everyday convo.... BUT i will say this.... Most of us are very vocal about how this or that rest isnt halal or dont eat this its not halal....they know this...for them to serve non halal stuff still...thats wrong. Even our goray friends go all out using only halal stuff when they invite us to gatherings... And dont even serve booze.
