Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
Jaundice
Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
jaundice is a symptom of liver failure, not a disease itself. the skin, the white of the eyes and even the inside of the mouth all start to get yellow (like gatorade yellow in serious cases) when there is something wrong with the liver and it isn't getting rid of things properly.
babies get that too sometimes, but that's because their liver isn't mature enough. if it isn't treated in them fast enough it can lead to brain damage. easiest cure is phototherapy, where you expose the infant to UV light to break up the metabolites ie just get the baby a tan

Great! Very impressive.
Just to point out that Jaundice is not the symptom of liver failure only (one of that is hepatitis). You are right it is not a disease by itself.
It can be caused by diseases before liver gets bilirubin like breakdown of RBC's (hemolysis) or diseases after liver had received bilirubin like gall bladder disease (Obstructive jaundice).
Yes phototherapy is good for babies for mild jaundice, very high bilirubin level can cause brain damage (kernicterus) which is fortunately not so common because of early prevention. Exchange transfusion of blood is needed in tha case.
Me liking this thread. :)

Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
phenylketonuria
Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
phenylketonuria - a word sara made up ... kidding a genetic disorder where u can't digest the amino acids
Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
ok let me try it
it is a syndrome in which the body isn't able to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. it is usually diagnosed at birth since it's a congenital defect, apparent a few hours after birth and gives the urine a distinctive smell
Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
Yes and Yes. To add to it, the reason the body is not able to metabolize phenylalanine is because the body does not have the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. This is required to convert phenylalanine into tyrosine. What happens instead is phenylalanine is converted to phenylpyruvate which is detected in urine.
The reason this is dangerous is because amino acids compete for the same transporters to get to the brain and if one is in higher concentrations than it blocks others from getting to its destination. Causing many problems in brain development
Those with PKU have to have a diet low in phenylalanine for the rest of thier lives. Babies are tested for this soon after birth in developed countries. Yes, it causes the urine and sweat to have a distinctive odour.
Re: The GS Health and Fitness Dictionary!!!
i forgot the name of the enzyme :$
