The final 16

OK, so who do you think will be the last 16? Please state which players do you think will be dropped not which you want to drop.

I think the following 5 will be dropped: Taufeeq, Bazid, Rao, Gul, Asim.

The final 16

Pakistan's 21 member preliminary squad was announced on May 18 for the tour of England.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Taufiq Umar, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Faisal Iqbal, Shahid Afridi, Bazid Khan, Asim Kamal, Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Asif, Rao Iftikhar, Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul, Zulqarnain Haider

The squad will train in a conditioning camp at Lahore from May 25-June 5

The final 16 will be announced on June 9.

Re: The final 16

Will Asif and Rana be available for the first conditioning camp? A couple of the reports from last week indicated that they are still finishing up their county stint.

If such is the case, then fourteen (14) players mentioned above, in addition to:

Shoaib Malik
Umar Gul

Re: The final 16

  1. Taufeeq Umer
  2. Salman Butt
  3. Imran Farhat
  4. Inzimam (c)
  5. Yunus Khan
  6. Bazid Khan
  7. Shoaib Malik
  8. Afridi
  9. Akmal (wk)
  10. Razzak
  11. Shoaib Akhter
  12. Rana
  13. Kaneria
  14. M Asif

Re: The final 16

Asif and rana will be selected in the final 16 regardless of their availability for the conditioning camp.

Re: The final 16

Openers:
1) Salman Butt, (2) Imran Farhat, (3)Shoaib Malik.

Middle-order:
(4) Younis Khan, (5) Mohammed Yousef, (6) Inzimam ul Haq*, (7) Faisal Iqbal, (8) Asim Kamal.

All-rounder:
(9) Shahid Afridi, (10) Abdul Razzaq.

Fast Bowlers:
(11) Shoaib Akther, (12) Mohammad Asif, (13) Rana Naveed, (14) Mohammad Sami.
**
Spinner:**
(15) Danish Kaneria.

Wicket-Keeper:
(16) Kamran Akmal+

*Openers:
We don't need pack of opener's here therefore Tauffy should not be selected, and since Woolmer thinks Malik can fill the gap, and after his grity innings in Srilanka this tour will be a true test of his capabilities.

Middle-order:
In Middle order I have given preference to Asim Kamal over Bazid Khan, thanks to his temperament and he has proven he has the ability to handle the pressure and this tour (if selected) will give him a confidence and a plus he has safe hands in gully region or short-cover.

All-rounders:
I dont consider Malik an all-rounder any more since he is given the responsiblity to bat as an opener, that should be his primary responsibility and what ever he does with his bowling is just a bonus now (since coach and think tank want to persist with him). There will be a fight b/w Afridi and Razzy for the 6th spot since its England Razzy ability to swing and seam the ball may win him the place. However Afridi has already made his case via good performance in the county season (bowling).

Spinner:
only for test we have relied on Dani for a long time and whenever looked upon, he has return in kind, I hope he can improve his fielding. Only question remains how good will he be on english pitches, perhaps calling Mushi before tour will be in his and Pakistan's benefit. However having someone like Saqlain Mushtaq (quality off-spinner or left-arm spinner) can always give him a better support from the other end and so far Pakistan has ignored injecting new spinner by saying pressure series...etc and as for Saqi they have simply ignored him. Sad but true.

Wicket-Keeper:
Kamran Akmal is a good keeper and pretty good with the willow as well, but this long english tour can play trick's and its always safe to say you can carry along two W-keepers just in-case, but I think the gap can be filled by Asim Kamal who has some experience in that department as well, I dont like to voice Younis Khan's name coz he will have added pressure with his batting and vice-captaincy.*

Re: The final 16

I think for the back up keeper, they will go for Faisal Iqbal.
Woolmer mentioned in his Q & A section that Faisal Iqbal used to be a keeper and can be used as a back up keeper.
He also has mentioned on couple of occasions that Faisal will likely to be preferred over Kamal as a batsman.

Re: The final 16

I would prefer Kamal over Iqbal as a batsman if we are talking about 6-4-1 kinda team, however he knows that better and if faisal can keep wickets (just in case) thats good to know.

Re: The final 16

I'm sure that many of us are anxiously waiting for the Pak tour to Eng just like I'm. I'm not surprised with the 25 players for the camp but I'm baffled with using Shoaib Malik as an opener with Farhat. When we have a pool of good players who can be really good openers like Farhat and Butt, then why in the world go with Shoaib Malik?

It's true that Butt hasn't performed well lately but that doesn't mean to ax him out forever from the team. English pitches are bowler-oriented and make shift openers won't cut the grass for us. Similarly, Pak bowling attack looks quite strong with the return of Shoaib Akhtar and Kaneria should def. be in the final 11 as we don't have any good spinner available at the moment.

I'm sure many of the fellow guppies remember the test match where Saqlain rolled over the English batting in 2001 summer. Well, I see Kaneria having that ability now since it's a huge loss that we can't employ Saqi for various reasons.

Re: The final 16

bhai saab...butt is not even doing good in domestic matches how will he play in england then?

Re: The final 16

As long as Taufeeq and Rao are dropped I really couldn't care about the rest. Inzi has already pretty much made his mind up about the final XI (refer to comments made about Sami, and Farhat/Malik combo opening). So all this is just melodrama.

Re: The final 16

Thanks for the note.

Acrobi Bhai, very good post. A few points worth discussing:

Taufeeq Umar should be dropped, yes, agreed upon that point. Butt and Farhat alone will do the job (combined with Malik, if Inzamam prefers him in that slot).

Asim Kamal over Bazid Khan seems a pretty logical decision, however, Afridi and Razzaq has been looked as rather an on-going war and with the return of a solid Iqbal in the middle-order, I don't think there is any slot left for Asim in the team. Maybe a few matches here and there (which is what Iqbal has done so far, up until this point), but these two would have to wait for permanent slots in the team post-World Cup.

As far as the wicket-keepers, either Pakistan 'A' team's Zulqarnain Haider or Faislabad's Mohammad Salman should be included as back-ups, just in case, even though Iqbal can manage the gloves. It is always useful to have an extra specialist keeper, on a tour spanning for more than 60 days.

Once again, as long as Razzaq will be a part of the team, there will always be a selection fight between him and Afridi for that one slot.

Re: The final 16

Razzaq would definitely be better in England, bcoz of seaming conditions that will favour him.
