I was unemployed for about 1 year. And let me tell you, its really discouraging, when you are educated, and have work experience in your field. for a while, I had a lot of interviews, but just wasnt getting the
jobs. Then the interveiws dried up, and nothing for months! That was the most heart breaking....cause I knew I was qualified for all those jobs. The only advice you can give them is to hold on,
and keep trying. Dont give up, cause something is out there for them. Finally after a year of being unemployed, I had 2 interviews in one week, and got offered BOTH positions! and both positions were equally
AMAZING! so then I was in another dilemma!
Anyway, just tell them to be strong, and keep applying for jobs. This is one of the worst recessions since the great depression, and a lot of people are out of work. Dont give up, and something will evenutlaly come
along. Also, they should take advantage of this time off, and do something they have been putting off - like going back to school, taking some upgrading courses, taking some leisure courses (I started taking
cake decorating classes), or travel. Best of luck to them all!

that must have felt so incredible for you, i know i would be on top of the world being offered both jobs and the hardest part is to pick which one.
I was jobless for about 6 months....and only started feeling desperate and kind of depressed after 3 months..I did work but they were temporary/dead end jobs..but yeah it was pretty tough, b/c I felt I was qualified for so many jobs but I never even got a reply, forget ever getting an interview. :(
Sound advice guys! Yes InshAllah I hope you guys are right. One of my friends too have been out of work for a year after doing a degree and a masters at one of the best unis in the world.. after a year or so of applying he got a job with an amazing company al humdulilah!
i would be afraid that i would forget everything i learned in my classes if the time goes beyond a couple months of unemployment......then the serious depression would start.

i'm in that boat right now, just finished with the deg and it's been a month, the problem is that the people that have been laid off or unemployed for a yr are getting the jobs i'm skilled for so it's these entry level jobs that we have to be a bit desperate in when looking, just to get experience.
Times are tough. I recently hired a new receptionist for my office. She has been unemployed for a year. I literally hired her after five minutes to the interview because she was extremely skillfull and could see lots of potential in her. Advised them not to give up, tell them to do temp jobs if they can, this seems to be smartest way to get yourself known to the company.
I was without a job for a year...........and I understand that at times it can feel uncomfortable.....even more so depending upon your financial situation. For example, some people may need a job more than others ....and some can manage for a length of time without one.
You know when you start working.....you're not gonna get that "break" that you have right now. You might even miss it.... I know I did, lol. It's easier said than done, but try to see the "good" in a challenging situation. You can sometimes find a couple of pros in even a difficult scenario.
If you're going on job interviews and getting turned down....don't take it so personally. That employer could have rejected you because you lacked experience......or were too young/old.....which are things that are out of your control. Or they're looking for someone with different skills.......it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be a good fit anywhere. I know that employers sometimes are required to interview by law/rules....an x number of candidates. And so it's also possible that the employer had "made up his/her mind" about who to hire much earlier.....but is only interviewing candidates to fulfill a status quo. The interviewer has absolutely NO experience in working with you....he doesn't know what you're like as a person.......therefore it's not a rejection of you as a person. You may not have liked them as a boss....and the rejection could even be a blessing in disguise. A thousand reasons why you might have been turned down...and you'll probably never find out what it is...so don't dwell on it. I believe that rizq is from Allah.....and with some effort and prayer on your part....He'll place you where you're meant to be.
***And when times are tough in the job market....you have to put yourself out there and be more proactive. You can't just drop off or email your resume and hope that someone will respond to it or call you back soon. You might have to take the initiative to call first.....and let your voice be heard.....the persistence can be associated with interest. Or even show your face, (pay a visit, etc). Maybe attend job markets.....or contact friends who are employed in the same field....connections can help. Some people even go beyond a paper resume....and create a CD of their accomplishments/background.......some drop off a portfolio for review that contains resume/recommendation letters/positive evaluations/documents that reflect successes at work, etc. That way.....the employer has "more" to look at than just a resume...can give you an edge above other candidates. If you do your research and find out the name of the employer, a bit about the company and it's goals....and especially the successes of the company...and bring these things up in the interview.........it gives the impression that you're "well-informed"....gives a more personal feeling.
There are so many tips online about how to conduct yourself during an interview and how to create a strong resume, etc that you can look up. Keep persisting, something will turn up soon. You wouldn't want to work with someone who has rejected you anyway. That rejection clears the path for better opportunities.
I’ve read studies that indicate fat/ugly people are less likely to get hired when put nxt to someone with a similar/same reasume. Lies? Perhaps. Scared and paranoid…oh yes :hinna:
I’ve heard that as well…but is the employer really going to tell someone that:
“Look…I didn’t hire you because you’re overweight and unattractive…I didn’t hire you because you remind me of annoying Aunt Agnes…I didn’t hire you because you bear an uncanny resemblance to my ex wife…I didn’t hire you because you have a lisp…I didn’t hire you because your accent is irksome…I didn’t hire you because I don’t like brown people or white people of your race…I didn’t hire you because I am required by some company law to interview x number of people and I already know who I’m going to hire but you’re just wasting your time but fulfilling a quota for me…I didn’t hire you because you’re too young/old and if I told you that would that it would fall under age discrimination…I didn’t hire you because I’m just having a bad day and I don’t fee like interviewing you and somehow I’m just not feeling the chemistry…I didn’t hire you because even though you had a strong GPA and recommendation letters, I think you graduated from a really inferior university…I didn’t hire you cuz you moved from the south and I don’t much like them Southerners…I didn’t hire you because during the interview I could tell that you don’t have the right skills and you probably won’t know squat if were to take you aboard, I didnt hire you because you’re white and I’m supposed to get more minorities to diversify my staff, etc…bla bla bla bla bla.”
***What if the employer is the type to pick someone who is truly skilled as opposed to just attractive because he doesn’t want to waste time or money?
***What if the employer (let’s say it’s a woman) doesn’t hire an applicant simply because the applicant is far more prettier…and jealousy is the reason for the rejection here?
Attractiveness is subjective and I’ve seen unattractive people in various professions. I’ve seen average looking people…who really carry themselves well…(in terms of dressing professionally, body language, social interactions, confidence)…in the work place. You’ll get a job…when and where you’re destined to get one.
It took me just over a year after finishing my degree to get a full time job however I'm still on a lower pay than everybody else but it is what I want to do so gotta deal with it.
My advice is never lose faith in Allah, everything happens for our good. All the rejections got me down big time but i knew every time i didn't get the job clearly this is not what Allah has planned for me. So my advice- continue applying and don't lose faith; your time will come.
The company I'm working at is going to shut down :(
I'm still in uni, I worked there part-time. I've been looking for another job for a year and I still haven't found anything-just a simple part-time job! It's so hard! I need that income, I haven't asked my parents for money in years, and I don't want to start now.
Uni is so hard right now as well, since we all know that there won't be jobs for us out there in this field because of the recession, so I'm going for a postgrad, but I feel so scared what if that application is rejected too? Universities don't accept many people now either...

I can kinda relate to that.. I wonder if a coalition govt was really the way forward...
take up contracting work, it pays well and your taught the job in 3/4 weeks, so you don't need much in terms of experince. Minimum length of most contracts are 6 months too.
Create your own business. Not all businesses require a big pile of money to start. Do whatever you can to make an honest living, reduce your spending to nothing, and know that something will come. You just never know what is around the next corner.
