the difference between aap and tum

im a confused ABCD lol…i dont get what the difference is…when should aap be used and when should tum be used???

Re: the difference between aap and tum

aap shud be used wiv elders or people you wana pay respect to or may be to a stranger or a person you dont meet much or may b aap is mostly more respectable..I wont just say aap is only for people older tha you, cus my godmum calls me aap, so its more respectable..

Tum...much more to be used wiv people of your own age group or younger or people who you quite friendly wiv..u can use aap instead of tum but u cant use tum where aap is used for example u can t call ur parents tum..but u can call ur kids aap, do u get..

o gosh just cant believe I wrote..hope its helps Fairywing85

Re: the difference between aap and tum

thanks shani...i understand what u mean....so like u can call everyone aap if u wanted to but u cant call someone older tum? yea?

well thats what i thought but my mum said its rude to call someone tum...older or younger...so im even more confused..i call my fiance aap..but then...should i call him tum..or aap...

Re: the difference between aap and tum

Yes sometimes it can be rude to use tum if you do not know the person. Aap is the more polite version thus it is used for elders and strangers etc.

Re: the difference between aap and tum

thanks uzzybuzzy

oooh right..i said tum to my lil brother and my mum was like u should never say tum...they use it in bolllywood films all the time....is that cos its hindi or just because thats how they do it?

During my childhood, my mother wanted us to talk more Urdu than Pahari. Whenever we had to talk to people using the word 'aap', we always tried not to laugh, because 'aap' is the word for 'monkey' in Dutch.

(thinking about the Pakistani word 'apa' used for sister, that would be funny for any child growing up in Holland, a reminder of 'aap', the 'monkey' word)

Re: the difference between aap and tum

hahahahaha thats funnnny ^
