Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
good food comes at a price. there is no way around this.
you could do things like buy those veggies that are in season, usually cheaper. modify your eating habits to make do with smaller portions of meat/poultry.
but at the end of the day, it is better to pay your grocer than your doctor.
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
smaller portions is the best that i can come up with.

depends on what you mean by eating healthy.
first thing would be for eating healthy is to cook at home, and eat out less, so u are in control of what is going in your food.
for now I will assume you are not going for all organic stuff because that adds some to the pricetag.
cheapest way to do this is to really balance what you eat. and see what the portion sizes are.
veggies and fruits should feature heavily and you can get them cheaper from farmers markets etc
now in chicago, so instead of jewel or dominics, you try Valley or even walmart you will get better prices, same for places like costco.
buy in bulk, use as needed, there are things that can be frozen for sometime, meats for example, you also have to realize that if you are buying meat from regular grocers that you dont have to get cuts like ny strip or ribeye for much of your cooking. for zabeeha meat places, ask them about bulk and they will give you better prices.
eat inseason veggies, they seem to be cheaper, you may even discover new things.
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
grow ur own fruit/veges in ur backyard. hav ur own farm house :)
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
I think healthy eating is more about lack of the time to cook rather than the cost, it doesn't cost too much.
There was a time when we used to eat outside or take aways from chips n chicken shops everyday, it was expensive and not very satisfying either. But it's just aboutbreaking a habit.
I can imagine how difficult cooking everyday can be for working couples, best way is to shop on weekends and try to find special offers, cook different meals in large quantities and store in food containers and freeze it, you can cook a whole week's food on weekends.
X2 mentioned Farmer's market, try that, it's fun going there and you can buy very cheap fruits and vegetables.
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
farmers markets are never cheap, atleast not here in california. it is quite the opposite.
CSAs can work out very economical if you love all kinds of vegs and fruits, and picked the right farm. my friends signed up for one and are always giving away fresh seasonal produce they are swamped with on a weekly basis.
and amreeki markets are weird - some cuts of meat and poultry are often cheaper than fresh vegetables. time to rethink the current agricultural subsidies for corn and soy growers before starting the health-care bandaids..
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
^ Considering the fact that America is one of the fattest countries...not a bad idea.

Eating healthy is EXPENSIVE!!!
I don't think it's THAT EXPENSIVE - it's more **TIME CONSUMING - most definately**
I think you end up paying for the convinience and nice packaging. Most healthy stuff for yourself and your kids you can make at home for little amount of money.
Eating fruits, vegetables are more cheaper than eating meats
White meat cheaper than red meat
When eating out - salads are cheaper than entrees. And you can order 1/2 a portion which cuts cost and is a heathier alternative
No need to go to WHOLE FOODS and pricey organic marts for orgnaic foods
LARGE retailors (Walmart, SAM Clubs) carry hormone free milk, eggs for cheaper prices
Buy vegetables and fruits from DESI/ORIENTAL marts for cheaper prices instead of local grocery stores.
Something that says "fat free, sugar free, low fat" maybe not healthy. Avoid the price for packaging and buy in bulk. (Oatmeal, whole grain cereals, lentils)
Make homemade things like chicken stock, yogurt, hummus, juice for a fraction of the cost and you know that they are healthy with out dyes and perservatives.
Organic baby food - cost a TON. Make the same purees at home without the perservatives.
Brown Bag your lunch. You will eat much better and save money
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
Use spray oil. Don't overcook Ur food. Eat lots of salad i guess.
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
when people say they dont have time to cook its mostly because they are just not organized enough. I was one of those people.
all it requires is planning, plan your menu out and it will fall into place.
Re: The cheapest way to be healthy
" jaan hay to jahan hay "
it would not be fruitless if we spend a little extra time & money each day in preparing for ourselves home cooked meals. i read somewhere that in order to loose weight & be healthy one should avoid processed food because it has high salt contents in it which is noway good for your health. junk food is another thing that should be avoided , they are all deep fried .

hareem , i dont think cooking for working couples is difficult at all . i work full time and alhumdulillah i cook fresh food everyday , we hardly eat out ... but ofcourse that is just my opinion and i dont say that it cant be difficult for others.
i like cooking and i am trying to eat healthy so therefore would rather eat home cooked food than food from outside.
