**An 18-year-old man has died in hospital after he was shot close to the scene of weekend rioting in Birmingham.** Two men have been arrested over the incident on Sunday in the Newtown area but police do not yet know if it is linked to the weekend violence.

Saturday’s rioting involved youths from the black and Asian communities and was said to have been sparked by a claim that a girl of 14 had been raped.

Police say “rumour, myth and speculation” had fuelled the violence.

Mosque ‘attacked’

Detectives stressed that forensic experts had been to the location of the alleged attack on the girl in the Lozells area but no formal complaint had been received.

A number of meetings had taken place in recent days in Lozells in protest at a lack of action over the rape, including one outside the alleged location.

The rape claim was also said to have been broadcast on a pirate radio station and put out on a community-based website.

The British Council said it had removed links from its website to the site until it was able to discuss why these comments were allowed to be published.

“As the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations we would not wish to link our websites to any discussion online which promoted intercultural conflict,” it said.

But police have stressed nobody has come forward claiming to be the victim, leading them to say “rumour, myth and speculation” had fuelled the violence.

On Sunday night further disturbances took place in the Lozells area, where a heavy police presence was in place.

Gangs of youths had gathered in response to an alleged attack on a nearby mosque.

Police said they were dispersed by a series of operations between 2200 and 0100 BST and the heavy rain across the West Midlands also helped to break up the crowds of youths.

Hours later police were called to Melbourne Avenue, about a mile from Lozells, in response to reports that a man had been seen with a firearm in the area.

The operation came several hours after several hundred youths were said to have marched "aggressively" down Lozells Road.

The violence on Saturday night culminated in the stabbing to death of a 23-year-old man.

A total of 35 people were taken to hospital with police reporting up to 80 separate criminal incidents. Five people were arrested.

Of those injured, nine remain in hospital, one with a fractured skull.

‘Outrageous, unacceptable’

A number of petrol bombs were also thrown and at least 12 gunshots were reported.

Chief Supt Tom Coughlan said Sunday had been a much calmer night: "There was a lot of work done to reassure the community yesterday, using many, many community leaders and I think that message has started to get through.

“Added to the real policing presence last night that had the effect of calming the situation.”

Baroness Uddin, Labour peer and advocate for social justice, human rights and equality, said: "What on earth has led to an unsubstantiated rumour leading to this kind of violence?

"There is absolutely no place for minority communities in Britain fighting amongst themselves in this way.

“Surely if there are criminal elements in our society, by working together you could get to the criminal much better, I think this is absolutely outrageous and unacceptable.”

Personally - where I live at the very least, Ive never been aware of a racial divide between these two ethnic groups - however tis also true that when I stepped into an Afro Carabbien hair-dressers in Green Street - there was a pin - drop - shatter - tear silence that reduced me to my paki self. Really - twas most peculiar. Up in this here joint - we all brothers.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

"Baroness Uddin". I dont know but this sounds kinda funny. I'm sure her real names something like shams-ud-din or qutb-ud-din and Uddin became her last name. You can also call her baroness-ud-din.

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

pssst... for those of you who dont know

Birmingham is in Alabama...United States

How very disgraceful... tsk.. tsk... tsk

It would never happen in the UK

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

^ lame

How come our Pakistani bretheren in the UK are always upto no good, they're always on the news for some sort of trouble. I think it reflects the differences between the sort of people who immigrate to the US and the sort that goes to the UK.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

^ Don’t know why BBC is taking such a keen interest of something that is happening in Alabama.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Oh come on… I think you are being harsh… they are not ALWAYS on the news,

Do you think that people think “hhmmmn, shall I go to the US where I’ll be a law abiding citizen or the UK where I can indulge in a a little social disorder”?

Agent Smith… The BBC prides itself on providing news from all over the globe…
btw, nice to see you back.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Not always on the news true, but you don’t hear about pakistani youths participating in deadly gang warfare in the US. It’s just something that is a lot more prevalent in the UK.

Some people don’t think before they act, they just do what comes naturally…

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

I find ur statement very offensive…i have generations of relatives in the U.K. (and some family in U.S.)…and perhaps ur angry but that is no reason to label all brothers in the U.K. in such a way…like lazy_daizy said, they r not always on the news…but u have to take into account that we r a majority in the U.K. and so we will be in the news a lot anyway…there is good news about us too…there r bad ppl everywhere, even in the U.S…rite now Asians r going thru a very hard time in the U.K…so stop letting a few idiots blur ur judgement of our Pakistani brothers there…again, i feel like u have insulted my own Father and Mamus/Chachus who immigrated to the U.K. and who are no less then the “sort” that went to the U.S.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Ok but that’s cos we have such a huge Pakistani population in the U.K. versus in the U.S…Pakistanis in U.K. are like Hispanics in the U.S…and there r plenty of Hispanic gang-bangers in the U.S.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Most likely he is Bangladeshi. I don’t see many Pakistanis changing their first names but lots of Bangladeshis do that.
I know a Bangladeshi guy at work who’s name is Sam Uddin. This is not just his nick name but his official name in company. I haven’t asked him his real name just to spare him from some embarrassment.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

oh yaar i have seen quite a few of these US pakistani’s and they are still living in cuckoo land

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

^ Yep, and i've heard of Paki guys getting in trouble in the U.S. too...it mite be cos the country is so vast that we don't all hear about it as much...whereas, in the U.K., the word spreads so quickly amongst the small Asian towns...and American kids thesedays :-|some of them are already looking for trouble...wait til this new generation grows up...unfortunately, SOME will be troublemakers just like the ones u may hear about the most in the U.S. (Blacks, Hispanics)...it depends, crime has no colour and i've seen it in both countries.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Huge Pakistani population in the UK? Get real. There are approximately 2 million people of Pakistani origin in the US as compared to around 625,000 in the UK. Don’t make me dig up references.

Some food for thought:

http://www.pakistan-facts.com/article.php?story=20040921223003761

**They have the highest unemployment rate, five times more than the British average; and crime rate is higher among them than in any other community. Fully 2 percent of the prisoners rotting in British jails are Pakistanis, the highest for any one community. **

You think Pakistanis in the US have similar statistics?

PS. If you don’t like my source you can also try the UK’s National Statistics Bureau

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

skhan, ok lets not talk about numbers but rather density. What is the paki population like in relative to other minority groups?

And yea, you make a good point. Most pakis are jahil and trouble making in the UK. Esp the young hoodlum wannabes. Reguardless of that, the yanks piss me off no end.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

^^^ lil Lady you are a trouble maker… Bhramies is a racial slur…Ehsan is a very rich and influentual man and may hire a hit man to get you for saying things about his lovely hometown.

most Pakistanies here are not Jahil… approx half the youngsters are girls

do you see them out on the streets

and as for the few hundred max young men on the streets the majority were just hanging around in groups…their main crime was to look Pakistani…

you know the type, the unkempt look

and a few of those are the type that stick sharp objects into people

Having said that

I still believe they are talking about the B’ham in the US…:snooty:

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

oh The BRAHAMANS are revolting against UNTOUCHABLES.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

Yes i believe that there is a huge Pakistani population in the U.K…and i am being real, i have lived in both places so i think i wud know…this is like general knowledge to me, don’t know the facts, numbers etc., nor do i have time to research this…but this is wot i have seen first hand…wot i wud like to correct about my previous comments is that, i meant Asian population but instead said Pakistani population…Another thing i realised after posting is that i was primarily thinking about England not really the whole U.K.…so now, if u wanna look at it one country to another…United States and England (only)…then as in a previous post i had said that the United States is such a vast country compared to England that it isn’t even fair to compare populations…afterall, there r states in the U.S. larger than England…

The thread was about the riot in B’ham and the only reason i posted here was becos i was offended by ur comment, belittling the men of the U.K., and making American men look much better…but since this has come up now, i still can’t make sense of ur numbers…i mean if outsiders (of U.K) learned anything during this quake disaster, about the ppl of U.K., then it wud be to learn how many Pakistanis (or perhaps Asians generally) there are in U.K…“2 million ppl in U.S. of Pakistani origin” seems high (to me)…that sounds more like the total Muslim population rather (someone correct me if i’m wrong please)…and only “625,000 in the U.K”!..i guess there are many sources out there stating different numbers then…cos just in these last few weeks i have heard numbers in the news much higher than that about locally (Britons) affected ppl…

For eg) in a special article on the BBC website it says that: *There are more than half a million Kashmiris in the UK*...Wot does that tell u? Also in the same article it says: *up to 1.5 million Britons have been affected in some way*...These numbers are as recent as they can get (quake period)...and i'm sorry but i just can't believe that there cud only be 625, 000 only...Also, on the British Library's website, it say's that in the 2001 census that there were 747,000 Pakistani's in the UK...so as u can see, there are different numbers...i however (even if u don't care to see it as legitimate) can say from just being British, and residing in America, that it's obvious there are more Pakis in England...but i do realise that this cud be in part that, it may just seem that way cos of the difference in land space...anyway, i was offended by ur statement as i have stated earlier, that was the reason i posted here...i am not gonna go back and forth quoting numbers and references...i don't have that much time...

And another thing, according to the US census of 2000...*approx. 200, 000 people of Pakistani origin lived in America*...And there r plenty of Pakistani guys, sitting in US jails too...i know of some myself...and IMO, the only reason we don't hear about their crimes as much is cos Pakistanis in US are so spread out.

(P.S: As for listing my sources i tried posting the link of the BBC article, the British Library’s and also the US Census, but for some reason it wudn’t let me copy/paste here…that’s y i just stated the names which u can easily find i think, if u search the net.)

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

The population density of Pakistanis in the UK is far higher than the US, where they’re all spread out amongst the white folk. So its no surprise when pakistanis get together they’ll get up to some mischief. Add to that the inherent racism they face, you’re guaranteed trouble.

Re: The Bhramies are Revolting

for the record:

According to Faiz Rehman of NCPA, there are close to 1 million Pakistanis in U.S. CNN once had the figure at 700,000.
