The most horrible thing a desi girl can do to a guy is make him her bhai. It is essentially, I do not dig you in that way but I will demand of you all I usually demand from my boyfriend. Without the sex.
The question is why do desi women chose to employ this strategy. Why keep the guy hanging around even when they have no chance?
"but I will demand of you all I usually demand from my boyfriend."
Not necessarily, in some cases the girl may not particularly enjoy the attention.....and might bestow the bhai label to get the message across that there's no hope...or that she's not interested.
Doesn't only happen in desi culture. Even non-desis will either say that I see you as a friend/brother/sister.
I've been in a situation where the guy refuses to understand a direct approach (directly saying that you're not interested)...and that doesn't deter the guy......(the persistence was annoying more than flattering) and led to the slapping of the bhai label. And in some cases, even that can take a while to be understood and accepted.
I’ve never employed the “bhai” strategy - the “it’s not me, it’s you” line works quite well to help a guy get a clue
Otherwise, guy friends are just that - we each know where we stand, and those guys who deserve the title/relationship and ehter’aam of bhai, get called such.
When I call someone bhai, its mostly out of respect and because they’re older than me… but like not too old to get called unkils such as TLK bhai, Azkar bhai etc on GS… I feel like I’m being disrespectful if I don’t use the term bhai for them… Its just the way it is in our house, like I’ve never called aapi by her first name, she’s always been aapi to me…
But no, I don’t make a bhai behan ka rishta with every other guy on the street… I keep it formal with people in the professional/academic environment and with people I don’t really know that well…
