now back to the point, i know what you are saying or what your point is but the problem is that you dinn get my point when i used those gaalis...yes you are right the thread is about nafasat n nazakat of urdu language. You n Asif n others keep stressing the point, urdu is nafees, urdu is nazuk urdu is courtly language n blah blah blah...
My point was that these gaaliyaan are also part of urdu language. If you like urdu as a whole you guys should be able to accept them too....
Languages are not nafees or nazuk bhai jaan....languages are just systems of symbols created by people like you n me inorder to communicate with in the groups of people. There are different kinds of ppl so there are different types of symbol systems....its people like you and me who choose a certain way or a certain symbol to communicate or to convey their message to others. its up to us how we use it, it could be as vulgar as any tapori language out there....so there goes the point, "urdu is nafees n nazuk"
2nd point....someone up there said, refined people don't use gaaliyaan. That statement is even more troublesome n irritating...it would've been ok had it been said in some primary class by a teacher telling kids what is right n what is wrong...."galiyaan dena is burri baat hei bacho aur acchay bachay gali nai dete....and blah blah blah....
But here i guess some adults were trying to discuss certain issue seriouly (atleast thats the impression i got from the atmosphere when i entered this thread) using the terms like refined, cultured, nafees.....
Now bhaijaan i am sure you know that these terms carry an unavoidable ethnocentric judgement along wid them. They are irremediably ethnocentric, abstract and vague with out having any concrete and absolute meaning.....your definition of these terms must be different than mine ....and culturally speaking by (since this is the culture forum) keeping the rules of emic vs etic in mind,basing your argument on such terms (which you expect people to take seriously) is very very WRONG. And not only wrong it sounds like a joke:--) . If you want people (for crying out loud, i said people not kids) to take your point seriously avoid using such abstract n bogus terms....atleast not in this forum....No scholarly dicipline will accept such an argument and throw it in the bin right away (man, you guys make ur personal likes n dislikes sound so scholarly that people like *ME can't resist making joke outta them*):)
and about courtly language....Asif you should read word to word accounts of Nizam of hydrabad's court....that ******* was one helluva gaalibaaz:--)

Tapori is the most modern-minded of all khari-boli based languages from the sub-continent. To term it vulgar is ignorance. It is a liberated language, freeing itself successfully of the subtle but definite prejudices that exist among its older cousins.
Tapori heavily discourages the use of the feudalistic "aap"(reserved only for use with parents and stuff). "tum" can be used, but its "tu" mostly, and this gives a humane touch to the language - everyone is equal and everyone is your brother. no more rude and grumpy "aap"s. Tapori also discourages sexism that is obvious in other languages - words dont have genders (what a dumb and confusing concept).
Tapori is also extremely robust, and doesnt lose its identity just because someone drops a word from another language in between. In fact, it has the fastest growing vocabulary in the subcontinent today. It can be written in almost any script without fear of being mistaken for a rival language.
Tapori literature, though young, is extremely vibrant (kik as$). While urdu and hindi poems are mostly subtle and repressed emotions, tapori is full-blown blunt. While traditional poets cry their eyes out and get wasted over some love poetry, tapori poets strike gold with their honest and sincere efforts (aati kya khandaala).
Please dont make the mistake of underestimating the power of tapori. It is the language of the future, the sooner you realize it and jump in, the better it is.

Wah Wah Queer Bhai, Ab mai sumjha . Is zubaan ko to humlog Bombay ki Hindi kehtey they.
We always wondered why they speak such atrocious Hindi or Urdu. And we concluded that the common languages in Bombay are Mahrashtrian and Gujerati. So we felt that this how the people speak Hindi on the West coast of India. For us it was very very bad slang.
I use to cringe when in the movies peole said "Terey ko and Meray ko" instead of "tujhko ya mujko"
I grew up in Allahabad where the local village people use words as "humka tu kahay ko bevkoof banaat ho" , "Aray bahiyaa tu hamar ka lagat ho.." etc. So when we heard these words in the movies and from people in Bombay, we reasoned that this is the influence of the UP villagers who went to Bombay in large numbers to get work. Even last year when I was in Bombay , I went ina Taxi driven by a bhaya from my old home town of Allahabad.
Well I suppose when lots of peole start speaking ina particular way , it becomes a dialect and later a language.
Black English, Pidgin English etc are then similar to Tapori.. Great . just learnt something today.

somehow i dont believe you are from india. not that its any of my business.. IMO, what you said isnt Allahabadi banarsi, its bhojpuri or bihari. and its marathi and gujarati, not maharashtrian and gujerati.
again, deccan hyderabad has its own brand of tapori. i am told karachi has its own distinct brand of tapori too.
Queer Bhai, you are right , about Marathi and gujerati. Sorry. That is my convent education rearing its head. I grew up in Allahabd, went to college in Banaras and in Bihar. Allahabad is eastern UP and Bhojpuri changes slowly as we go furrther towards Bihar. In dedp Bihar , I cant even understand the local Bihari dialect. I believe its called Maithili . But thanks for putting me straight.

I have never been to Pakistan , but I want to visit simply because I hope to hear people speaking good urdu in their daily lives. You think I will be disappointed??
Now I just collect old movies based on Moghul and Islamic themes. and enjoy the dialogs. If people want , I can post some interesting conversations in Urdu from movies of the 1950's and 60's. I have quite a few here with me.
