The beauty of classical Urdu language.

Hmmm…amazing the manner in which this thread started and how it has ended up

Khan Sahib, apni zabaan zara sambahalo. Naiklarki to bauhut buri aurat hai. What’s your excuse? (Xtreme stuns all with his fluent delivey of urdu dialogue)

Incidentally, my urdu sucks really bad, but i don’t mind having a go if people are prepared to listen.

Never let incompetence get in the way of well-meaning enthusiasm is my motto.

Well it isn’t actually my motto at all actually, but it’s a valid point nonetheless.

*Naiklarki to bauhut buri aurat hai. *<<<

What makes you say this? I thought she was discussing urdu literature and I think no one moderator or Admin would have any problem with that. Also, I don't want to be a 'scottish moaner' anymore.

Muzna ji, what does the words "The only difference I find" mean? Only difference of Refined Urdu speakers from what others speakers? The phrase might have given me the wrong impression than what you were really trying to say. in that case my apologies.

Dervaish bhaijaan, i don't wanna be rude or something but to tell you the truth i am quite sick n tired of ostentatious fools like urself standing behind my back 24/7 recording each n every single naiki of mine in their lil heads....

Sehar, its not just about urdu or punjabi, there shouldn't be any comparison between any language......each and every language is beautiful in its own way....

Languages are important aspect of cultures and like other aspects of cultures all languages should be respected equally by others.

There are about 6000 languages being spoken in this world today....and according to linguists almost half of these languages falls under the catagory of endangered languages which will become extinct by the end of this century..(* correct me if i am wrong, you are the one taking linguistics*)....luckily urdu does not fall under that catagory. But as some famous linguist has said, "Languages no longer being learned as mother tongues by children are doomed to become extinct, like species lacking reproductive capacity...."

So how many of you guys teach ur kids their mother tongue at home? whether its urdu, punjabi, meri pahaRi, pothohari, telugo, tamil, hindi, and blah blah blah?? huh?

And yea all those 6000 languages of the world are the common cultural treasure of human beings....and we should care about each n every language out there in order to preserve the linguistic diversity of the world....otherwise this world would be a less interesting and less bautiful place....

All the more motivation. You like BBQs?

Can you imagine such a powerful confrontation as the one i wrote down from Mughal e Azam being so polite in any other language [apart from Arabic and Farsi]?!

That's quite an interesting statement. I'm not sure myself as I'm personally completely ignorant of literature but wonder if other literature lack such chararacteristics. Bharysh, I know you take English literature. What do you think comparatively speaking?

PS. I love Urdu and I love Punjabi and I love English but for being better than the other one when it comes to literature is completely a matter of personal perception unless you come up with some solid arguments involving the fundamental and essential consturcts of literary language (form, frame, and metaphor) and how they propagate its expression-ism in varying shapes (classic or modern), other than simply saying that

Naiks :)

You are right about the number of languages present in the world right now, and no doubt many of them will become extinct due to the lack of native speakers, or due to adapting to other languages. For example, our third generation in America is most likely not to know of any our mother tongue except a few words. Scary thought :)

Yep, I plan to teach my children as much punjabi as i know, and more :)

roomi,

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

i am not at this present moment making a comparison between the different literatures of urdu, punjabi and arabic/farsi/english etc. That is a totally different topic.

My comment which you quoted was to do with language itself especially spoken language.
My argument is that Urdu is much more ornate and embellished than Punjabi when it is spoken because it was originally a courtly language used in the darbars of various rulers of hindustan and therefore it maintains within it a whole host of flowery and poetic expressions and idioms which had their origins in the address of kings and courtiers which punjabi, not being a courtly language, lacks. Whether this makes one language better or worse is a mute question but certainly it empowers urdu with a host of clever devices and phrases which can sound very beautiful and delicate but still natural whereas in punjabi such terms of grandeur do not come naturally IMHO.

This shair is saying: Do not let your intellect enter the garden//Otherwise the moths will be unjustly killed!

If the word in the poem is "maghaz"...

Moths die out of ishq which in Iqbal and generally Urdu-Perso-Arabic poetic tradition is opposed to aqal/maghaz (intellect); so if you bring your intellect into the garden they will die thinking you are "ishq" whereas you are in fact aql...

FYI bhaijaan, i was kinda waiting for you to appear and deliver your sermon…so what took you so long?? were you thinking which nick you should use here???

ps>> Asif, the word is not "maghaz"....its magas!

magas= kind of fly, wasp which makes wax:--)
