Its recommended to keep moustache above ur lips so it does not touch the water you drink.
i thought the real reason this was specified was that Muslims should not resemble other nations.. not this drinking water thing..
is that correct??

I didn't specify the reason why its recommended, I mentioned how much it should be trimmed. You are right about "not resemble other nations", IMO.

I told him to trim the moustache to the extent that it doesn't touch the water when he drinks it. It does not necessarily mean that reason of recommendation of trimming moustache is so that water does not touch it while drinking.
Let me try it again:
Recommendation: Trim moustache. How much?: to the length that water/milk (or other drinks) don't touch it when you drink.
^ It does not really give you reason "Why" its recommended.
well on to the reason.. it's cuz we shouldn't look like other nations right???
how about this??

the moustache shouldn't be shaved off it should be trimmed very fine.

Today you will find 100s of combos of moustache and beard length and fashion, it doesn't mean that you cut your jaw out because everyone has all the fashions n style and Muslims can't adopt one as "unique". Simply follow what Prophet Mohammed PBUH did in his time.
lame argument Changez.. the whole idea of 'doing it so as not to 'resemble' other nations is flawed.. which is what the mormon beard points out.. No wonder the Qur'an doesn't have such commandments for Muslim and rather outlines a religion that's not hung up on personal appearances.

Well it may be flawed. May be you can "differentiate" yourselves from "majority of non-Muslims" in your AREA instead of saying "hey, Mongols have hair like that" while living in US or Europe :-|

certainly it is important to keep beard with no or very short mushys
this is the sunnah of all ambiyas
Sunnah of all anbiya?? does the Bible say something about this.. Old or the New Testaments?
How do we know it is necessary to have a beard in islam? Is it just recommended or an essential part of islam?

i think hadith is good enuff for us to know what Muhammad (saw) said and what he ordered us muslims to do....
u just take out the flaw in ur logic of understanding the Quran without hadith and all shall be crystal clear for u....
you cannot distort the history already known by generations earlier to you.. so if there are differences the early histories supercede what was written later..
therefore once again.. any proof from earlier scriptures or other writings attributed to prophets that the prophets had been mandated to grow their facial hair?

ever wondered why "Orthodox" Jews have beard?
no Changez, tell me why? and before you go down that road.. remember.. the only reason majority Muslims keep beards is to 'distinguish' themself from other religions... not to follow past anbiya sunnah..
Is it forbidden to dye the beard?

So you have a survey! wow, when and where was that conducted?
I used to believe that most Muslims keep beard because it is "highly recommended", "mandated", "required" by Prophet Mohammed PBUH... not everyone does it to follow "distinguish yerslves from other religions' followers" hadith... I think there two different hadiths one for "grow beard trim moustache" and one about giving one of the reasons for beard. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.
