Teenage years can be hard enough without the trauma of being overweight. So when insults pushed “morbidly obese” Bethany Walton to eat even more, she saw only one solution: surgery.
Diets are hard to stick to at the best of times. But when you face daily insults from strangers about your size, the urge to comfort eat can be over-whelming. Which is why Bethany Walton has instead turned to risky stomach surgery.
All sympathizes but come on she should adopt a healthy diet. I mean it is hazardous to health when you are obese and cannot blame insults or society for it. I mean if you are thin than you are black or brown, Asian or Muslim. Insults and taunts will be there, one must make an effort to remain healthy.
obeseity is a disease...I had anorexia once, it was caused by obbsessive compulsive and autism...they fixed it by giving me medicine and now I'm normal.
Umm, as a health student I can tell you that obesity is not only due to diet. Genes have a large portion to play as well. And if you want references, I can very well provide them. It is tragic that people have to throw insults at her. But I hope she realizes that only people with low self-esteem insult others in the first place.
It's attitudes like that that drive them to be that way.
You hurl insults at someone, their self esteem is totally destroyed. They have no friends and no self worth, so their only solace is food. And they gain more weight and have ppl insult them and treat them badly even more, and they get depressed and eat even more. It's a vicious cycle. Unfortunately people--like you--don't recognize that, they think its okay to make fun fo someone who's overweight, and that being thin (or healthY) is as easy as putting down that cheeseburger, but it's not.
I wouldnt make fun of them or anyone else for that matter but the thing is that they need to do something about it, for themselves, not for others. Yes they should be accepted but I dotn feel sorry for them Allah na karre its not like cancer where you cant do something. With obesity you know the risks, you know how to get rid of it and you should do it, not for what people think of you but because of your health and quality of life.
People indulge in alot of destructive behavior when they have no self esteem or self worth, to name a few, they drink alcohol, smoke weed/take drugs, have meaningless/unprotected sex, and cut themselves.
Everything except for that last one, i know you don't necessarily HAVE to be depressed to do them (speaking from a non-desi, non-Islamic point of view).
Food is no different in this case. Alot of ppl do use it for more than nourishment. Making fun of someone for any reason is wrong, but even now its still okay to make fun of soemone who's over weight and that's pretty pathetic. Even now, I know since I wrote this, I'll have ppl ridiculing me or thinking badly of me and it's really pathetic and immature on their part.

So, in conclusion to your posts here... you prefer to pity them?
Having no sympathy doesn’t mean insulting someone. They are two different things.
If I see some able body standing at traffic light begging for money. I am not going to have any sympathy for that person either. But that doesn’t mean that I am insulting him.
The only case of "he/she brought it upon himself, so I feel nothing for him/her" is when someone is trying to harm someone but instead they end up inflicting harm upon themselves. As for someone suffering from obesity, anorexia, heroin addiction etc...yes, as a human being, I do feal sympathy for them. If you were suffering from any of those conditions or had knowledge regarding the technical details of it, you would know that it isn't as easy as stop eating food, start eating more food and stop doing heroins respectively.
Its a terrible situation to face...my friends wife works directly with bengali prostitutes that are heroin addicts...its a horrible thing to see and its a horrible life that they lead but the fact is for them to get to that stage in the first place was their responsibility...
If someone gets lung cancer from smoking you will have sympathy cos they have cancer but its their fault isnt it...
It like if someone gets AIDS...funnily enough i doubt many people have sympathy for them...people tend to blame them for not practicing abstinence...
Now its the same with obese people...they get themselves to that state...so it is their responsibility...
Something like cancer is something which is bad luck and you cant do something about...
Yes, it is their responsibility for bringing it upon themselves but that doesn't mean you can't feel sympathy for them. In many cases, people are born obese. Is it their fault? I'm sure everyone would like to get rid of their problems but isn't easy to do so. As you said about heroin addicts, it is a very horrible condition to suffer through. Once you get hooked on that stuff, it is impossible to get off of it. Your brain stops producing the chemical that heroin provides your body with and without that chemical, either coming from internal or external source, your body cannot live.
There is difference between food and heroin addiction. Heroin is an addicted drug, food is not, these people have a problem, they resort to food when they feel happy, sad or whatever. With heroin and other addictive drugs, even if a person does not want to, they take it their body craves it. You can get over food as a resort to take out your problems by yourself if you have the will but with drugs, one has to admit to a clinic or institution. Much serious of a problem
