Terms of Endearment

So do you have any favorites? Which ones do you dislike?

I personally don’t like “dear” too much. I don’t mind it coming from people I know pretty well and some people can pull it off. I have noticed that some girls from Pak use it often…and when combined with not-so-good English…it sounds Aunty’ish. Why must they use it…WHY?!? It’s among my pet-peeves. There, I said it!!! Ducks from the tamaater that will be hurled my way.

:tamatarr:

Re: Terms of Endearment

i hate it people when they call me **'YAAR'*...well, if we aren't friends, we ain't 'YAARS'...however, *'YAARAA'**** may be [just may be] OK because it doesn't carry the same connotation as 'YAAAR'. what you say?**

Re: Terms of Endearment

I don't mind yaar. I know that it means "friend"....but I think that it's so casually used that it's like the equivalent of the word "guys" in English. Yaara, on the other hand, sound gay (IMO)...not a fan of it.

Re: Terms of Endearment

hmmm...achchhaa ji. hamaare Lucknow meN ise buraa samjhaa jaataa hai :) is liye maiN ne kahaa :)

Re: Terms of Endearment

I think I once heard (dunno if it was from my mom or someone else) that it doesen't look good when girls/women to say "yaar" too much. I don't really care, unless it's over-done.

Re: Terms of Endearment

YES, you heard it right...it's NOT considered 'moHazzab' in tahzeeb-yaaftah cultures to say "YAAR'...it's for both men N women but more so if girls say it...talk about gender bias! hehe :)

Re: Terms of Endearment

Dude is the one I cant stand :) if it comes under the terms of endearment ..

wayse I dont like using baby doll and cutie pie kind of stuff - too gay for my liking :)

Re: Terms of Endearment

Just because your people don’t like to use it doesn’t make it bad-tehzeeb…

Re: Terms of Endearment

I totally agree with your opinion about dear. All my cousins in Pakistan use it and it sounds so old fashioned.

Re: Terms of Endearment

dear should only be used in professional communications IMO

For casual ones I use jigar, yaar, dude etc. .

Re: Terms of Endearment

I use Yaar with almost everyone and jigar with my cousins :@:

Re: Terms of Endearment

yaara, jani, dear, darling

all of these make me cringe too !

Re: Terms of Endearment

HEY YOU!

Re: Terms of Endearment

I dislike:

(exsessive use of ) jaaniye and sohniye

It sounds very fake. "Hi jaaniye" "hello sohniye"

Re: Terms of Endearment

Thats sounds too filmy ......Janiye Sohniye lol

Re: Terms of Endearment

I know lot of girls who talk like this.
Using these words in every sentence :disgust:

Re: Terms of Endearment

And lots of girls use Darling too :disgust:

Re: Terms of Endearment

"Jaani" is cringe-inducing.....I don't care care if it's said by a guy or a woman. Blech. Don't like jigar much either.

Re: Terms of Endearment

^ jigar is a 'guy' thing and suits them only.
