Chennai: Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Australian captain Ricky Ponting took two opposite sides as the walking debate raged in the ongoing cricket World Cup in the sub-continent.

Tendulkar walked back to the pavillion despite the umpire signalling not out during India’s league match against the West Indies, while Ponting stayed his ground till he was ruled out after a successful review by Pakistan in another match.

[Tendulkar was hoping to score his 100th international hundred but his innings ended when he was dismissed for just two. He faced only four balls, clipping fast bowler Ravi Rampaul to wicket-keeper Devon Thomas and he walked without waiting for the umpire’s decision.

Ponting had made 19 when he edged off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez to Kamran Akmal at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Saturday.

When on-field umpire Marias Erasmus gave the Australian captain not out, the decision was reviewed and overturned.

Ponting admitted he knew he had edged the ball but said he had always waited for the umpire’s decision all through his career.

“There were no doubts about the nick, I knew I hit it, but as always I wait for the umpire to give me out. That’s the way I’ve always played the game,” he said.

**West Indies captain Darren Sammy hailed Tendulkar as “a true gentleman” for walking despite Australian umpire Steve Davis ruling him not out.

“It shows the measure of the man (Tendulkar). He is a true gentleman. After 17,000 runs, he could walk. That was brilliant on the part of Sachin,” Sammy said after his side lost their last Group B match by 80 runs here last night. :k:

**Yuvraj, who set up the win for India, was not surprised with Tendulkar walking.

“I am not surprised. He (Tendulkar) felt that he has to walk and he walked. It is a personal decision. It should be left to the person concerned,” said Yuvraj who hit his maiden World Cup ton (113) and later took two West Indies wickets.

Sri Lanka vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene and Kiwi off-spinner Nathan McCullum were also involved in a clash over a ‘clean’ catch in their league match in Mumbai.

McCullum took a brilliant, one-handed diving catch off Jayawardene but TV umpire Amish Saheba was called in and he ruled it not out.

New Zealand’s stand-in skipper Ross Taylor said it would make things easier if batsmen were to take the word of the fielder in such situations.

“It depends upon the person. You look at (South Africa batsman) Jacques Kallis. He asks the fielders if they caught it cleanly and he trusts the words of the fielders,” said Taylor.

“You put it up to the batsman to make the decision and at the end of the day you just hope the technology is right and if the technology is not right, well then don’t use it.”

Jayawardene, who went on to make 66 and shared a vital 145-run stand with captain Kumar Sangakkara (111) to set up Sri Lanka’s comprehensive 112-run win, was adamant he was right to stand his ground.

“If I felt it was a clean catch, I would have walked. It was a 50-50 thing and it was fair it went to the TV umpire.”

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said it would be a boost for the game if players walked.

“It’s nice to see people walking but that doesn’t happen now I guess. There is a system in place now so you can’t get away with it. I mean people still take chances and why not? Jayawardene took a chance and it went the other way.”](“http://www.sify.com/sports/collingwood-s-daughters-wanted-england-to-lose-news-cricket-ldvmjocdhde.html?tag=top%20sports%20news”)

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

I think it would be silly thing to compare something like Ponting to a great batsman such as Tendulkar

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Ponting is a cheat, if someone had done this when Australians were bowling, he along with Chappal would have been crying their eyes out.

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

As much as i hate Punter, I must say that when you are out of runs it is tough to walk when you are out. If you are scoring hundreds and playing a meaningless match it is easy to walk. If Tendulkar was out of form or was playing in the WC final against Australia, do you really think he would walk? Not trying to single out Sachin. Sachin is one of the best ever but I don't associate walking after you get out with Sachin (besides this incident). Gilchrist is the only name that comes to mind when u say the batsmen walked after getting out

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Tendulkar knows even if he fail here and there, but still will be a part of India team for some time, while Ponting needs a big score (by hook or by crook) and under great pressure to perform, else (warna)……………………………..!

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

What about** Muddasir Nazar** ?

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Count Lara too ......

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Yeah Speaking of Ponting, Lara, Sachin and we left out Muddasir Nazar :) Just Kidding, I was too young to recall Muddasir's walking and his overall career. All I remember of Madassir is that he would pull malcolm marshall and the ball would just loose speed and stop two feet ahead of the boundary line. I also remember him being a commentator in WC99 and he makes even Azhar Mahmood look like a million dollars as a WC analyst for sky sports. But overall, I am sure Mudassir did a good job representing Pakistan in the 70s and 80s

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

If we are born late, then there is a history to read! and my point was about "batsmen walking out after getting out" and the only name that comes to mind is Mudassir Nazar, he never looked at umpire and walked before umpire raises hand!

He may be bad in in commentary or praising someone, but thats not the issue of discussion :)

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

i have seen sachin walking away crucial match against autralia 98 in sharjah

he was on 143 on fleming's blowing, umpire didn't give it out, sachin just walked away. if he had stayed another 2-3 overs india could have won the match

btw this 143 was his best ever innings :)

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles…

A poll for Sydney’s Daily Telegraph in January 2008 showed that an extraordinary 82 per cent of Australians believed that Ponting was not a great ambassador for his country and 79 per cent felt the national team did not play within “the spirit of cricket”

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

It has nothing to do with punter's form. He said himself hat he did what he always does. Wait forhe umpire to give him out. I think those were his exact words. Nothing to do wih his form. T
Thats jst how he plays cricket. Tries to gain advantage by an means possible pushing he limit as much as he can get away with.

Kakaballis poll link makes it obvious hat even aussies dont think punter is a great sportsman or an ambassador of the sport or the country on australia

His attitude and nonsense in the field puts him much lower in my eyes comlared to lara and sachin compared to if he wasnt such a .......…

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

True. I agree with you. On the same note, do you remember how sporting Ijaz Ahmad was. He was clean bowled by Shane Warne in 99 WC Semi Final and he stood there shaking his head in approval/appreciation of the delivery. That made me so pissed off that day!

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles…

One thing other than we are punjabi brothers is common is us guess what

We both hate Punter  :omg:

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Ponting was my fav Batsmen until he became captain.

He is my fav batsman again for next three days.

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

I wonder why :@:

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

I am hoping for Ponting to repeat the heroics of 2003 WC Final. He made Bhajji his biatch that day

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Ponting did not do anything wrong - there is no law that says he has to walk. It is his personal preference. Just like it is Sachin's to walk.

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

We are talking about ethics, not law :-)

Re: Tendulkar,Ponting at opposite poles.....................

Yes, but Sachin thought he was out and walked. But Ponting will wait for the umpire's decision even if he knows that he is out. And if the umpire rules him not out, he will continue to play despite knowing that he was out. I guess it comes down to personal values in the end.
