Tendulkar ball-tampering decision on Tuesday

Sachin Tendulkar, who was charged with ball tampering during the second test between India and South Africa, will know his fate on Tuesday.

India’s leading batsman was summoned to a hearing by match referee Mike Denness before the start of play on Monday after television pictures captured images of him allegedly using his fingernails to interfere with the seam of the ball on Sunday.

Virender Sehwag, Deep Dasgupta, Shiv Sunder Das and Harbhajan Singh were also heard, all on charges of excessive appealing. Denness also summoned Indian captain Saurav Ganguly.

Denness requested videotaped copies of the alleged ball tampering incident from the television producers, who were obliged to provide it.

The hearing was held at St George’s Park at 0630 GMT on Monday, and Denness summoned all six players again after the close of the fourth day’s play.

The chief executive of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, Gerald Majola, said Denness would announce his decision on Tuesday.

Sachin Tendulkar has been given a suspended one-match ban and a fine for ball tampering while five other Indians, including skipper Saurav Ganguly, have been disciplined for bad behaviour.

Match referee Mike Denness found Tendulkar, widely regarded as the world's leading batsman, had brought the game into disrepute by ``acting on the ball'' during the third day's play of the second test against South Africa.

The ban was suspended until the end of the year while Tendulkar was also fined 75 percent of his match fee.

Denness confirmed the sanctions at a press conference after they had been leaked to the press by Indian cricket officials a day earlier.

Denness had summoned Tendulkar to a hearing after television pictures of Sunday's play appeared to show him interfering with the seam of the ball with his fingernail.

Ganguly was also given a suspended ban, for one test and two one-day internationals, for breaching the first two clauses of the International Cricket Council code of conduct dealing with the conduct of players and bringing the game into disrepute.

The most immediate action, however, came against batsman Virender Sehwag. He was banned for one test and fined 75 per cent of his match fee for ``showing dissent at an umpire's decision and attempting to intimidate the umpire by charging.''

He will miss the third and final test starting on Friday.

Television replays had appeared to show Sehwag appealing for a catch taken on the half-volley during the second day's play on Sunday.

Meanwhile, spinner Harbhajan Singh, Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta were fined 75 percent of their match fees and handed suspended one-match bans for the same offence as Sehwag.

I am trying not to feel happy about the misfortunes of Indian team, because I sincerely believe that Denness (whoever heard of this bloke before) has brought the game to more serious disrepute than all the six playes combined.

This ball-tempering thing has gone on far too long. ICC, being the lazy idiots as they are, have been sitting on this issue, allowing racist goons like Denness run amock, penalizing brown-skinned players. This is exactly the same thing which happened with Waqar Younis in the trip to England.

Excessive appealing I understand. Lets punish that, but is it only Indians who do that? If they are the only ones, lets ban 'em all.

Its time, a coherent policy about match referees is put in place. Only players of international repute should be appointed as referees. And there be clear guidelines on where the authority of the umpires lie and where the authority of the referee starts. Those who are on the ground have much clearer understanding of ball conditions compared to someone watching a TV replay in an hospitatlity box. Jeez! what dumb idiots!

He's been suspended! He was opening the seams of the ball - I saw with me own eyes!!

Mike Denness was the captain of the English team in the mid 70's. Didn't see the incident myself but I think we should not judge the refree so quickly. Having said that I do seriously think that the players from the subcontinent have been victim of these referees more than anyone else. Maybe it is to do with the spinless boards our countries have. Strict and clear guidelines need to be issued and adhered to. I think the days of calling it ball tampering if reverse swing is done by the two W's and an art when Gough does it should be truly over.

cat-woman,
"He's been suspended! He was opening the seams of the ball - I saw with me own eyes!!"

I have seen that picture. He might have even been cleaning the seam -- how can you tell ? He has an impeccable record and there is no reason to believe he would start now. As far as the others are concerned -- sure there was appealing, but the South Africans did the same. Some of them used F-words but they were not even warned while the Indians were suspended. I think that since F-words are obviously not considered offensive, the Indian players should feel free to use it on Denness.

didnt Hansje Cronje have a clean name....
and then all of a sudden it turned out to be what we all know now....
so a crimical is not a criminal unless proven and once he is found guilty no use looking at how long he was NOT CAUGHT....

what a shame, such a big name in cricket ...
or itni gireee huee harkat....
or indian meida ko to jaise mirchee hee lag gayee hai....

Cricket is a game played in grounds. The ball rolls over grass and dirt. Anyone who has played the game with a real ball and bat knows that as a bowler you clean the ball all the time. Since mid-70's we shine the ball only from one side. These are no secrets. This is common sense. The design of the seams is such that it can cause dirt to snuggle in, which needs to be removed regularly. I know it, cz I have played a lot with real cricket balls, and if anyone calls it cheating, then they don't know nothing about real cricket.

Cleaning the ball of dirt is completely different than scratching one surface to make it rough or to lift the seams. The latter two are ball-tempering and the first one is legitimate required activity. And the best judge of this is the umpire on the ground, who should inspect the ball at the end of every over. So, no. I, for one, will not delegate that responsibility to someone who is sitting in an hospitality box looking at a tv screen. Unless, ofcourse, the umpires are totally dumb or biased.

No. 2. Tendulkar having a spot-less record and all, is no defence. Having no blemish on your record just means you haven't done anything wrong, YET! Its not a license to run amock with cricket rules. Having said that, I have great respect for the player, and am still confused how can the English dude give such harsh penalties to six players, without umprires having once made any complaints. This is totally unbelievable.

These can as easily be Pakistani or Sri Lankan players. I, for the life of me, can not imagine an English bloke like Denness giving such fines and penalties to an Aussie or a Kiwi player.

Sweet revange by the South African! Yesssssssss!!!!!!

ahhh........

Come on Cat you didnt !!!

You just saying because you hate Indians .You are Pakistani biased for Shoib Akhtar eventhough he is rowdy fella

Serves him right: Waugh

Hobart, Nov 21: Australias captain Steve Waugh backed the International Cricket Council (ICC) after world crickets governing body handed Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar a suspended one-match ban for ball tampering.

If he`s picked the seam then he`s got to pay the penalty like everyone else, Waugh told a news conference in Hobart ahead of Thursday`s second test against New Zealand.

There shouldn`t be any favours just because of your reputation or the way you play the game. I think it`s been going on too long, the ball tampering, affecting the state of the ball.

There`s a ball there and there`s a bat and that`s the contest, Waugh said. If you alter either of those you shouldn`t be playing. It`s pretty simple I think.

If someone does something wrong they`re going to get penalised. In the past I think a lot of players were let off. It wasn`t consistent so if that`s what they`re trying to do it`s good for cricket.

Tendulkar was given a suspended one-match ban for ball tampering during this week`s second test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth, sparking Indian outrage.

Tendulkar, widely regarded as the world`s leading batsman and revered in India, was also fined 75 percent of his match fee by match referee Mike Denness.

Former England captain Denness ruled Tendulkar had brought the game into disrepute by acting on the ball on the third day of the second test.

Everyone knows how you are supposed to play, you are not supposed to tamper with the ball, and if they do that they will face the consequences, Waugh said. Reuters

this is the second time he has been accused i remember some years back abdur razzak had also accused him of the same crime

it is funny to see pakistanis rejouicing. indians and pakistanis are most fined (i think at 31 suspension, they r highest) and they take pleasure at other's discomfirt

as far as excessive appealing an like is concerned entire australian team can be suspeded forever, but who will dare.

India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants the national cricket team to pull out of their South Africa tour if penalties imposed on six Indian players stemmed from racial discrimination, it said on Wednesday.

If racial discrimination against the players is proved, India should not play there (South Africa),'' BJP spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra told a news conference. It's a very serious matter.''

But Malhotra said the BJP-led coalition government would not interfere. ``The government has no role to play, it's the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which has to decide.''

Match referee Mike Denness on Tuesday imposed fines and bans on six Indian players, including national icon Sachin Tendulkar in the drawn second test in Port Elizabeth.

Tendulkar was given a suspended one-match ban and was fined after Denness found him guilty of doctoring the ball.

Batsman Virender Sehwag received a one-match ban for excessive appealing,'' while captain Saurav Ganguly, Shiv Sundar Das, Deep Dasgupta and Harbhajan Singh got suspended one-match bans forbringing the game into disrepute'' for similar behaviour.

The BCCI has strongly condemned the referee's decisions, arguing that they were too harsh and that Tendulkar was cleaning the ball, not doctoring it. The board has also asked for Denness to be removed from the third test and the bans to be reviewed.

On a relevant point as Mike Denness is an ex England captain, will the current tour of England to India be effected because of this controversy?

I guess the Indians have realized its no good playing the third test if they're going to loose anyway so why not just pull out and blame it on discrimination.
I don't know if anyone remebers this but in the early 90's (I think it was the 92 world cup) Javed Miandad mocked the Indian wicket keeper when he was appealing excessively, probably one of the funniest moment in cricket.

Thank you, come again

Well, any time we, the Pakistanis, snap out of enjoying the miseries of Indian team currently on tour, imagine, Inzi and Waqar being penalized like that and four other members chastised on excessive appealing by a white english former test player, without any complaints whatsoever from either the local team or the neutral umpires.. and you can imagine the frame of mind of the players.

I don't think India will pull out of the tour (I hope so) and even if they do, it won't be because they are afraid to lose the third test match. They successfully drew the second against all odds, and even with such unpleasantnes created on the last day.

I, personally, find no enjoyment in this whole incident.
