If you like sci fi/fantasy stuff with a realistic bent, you'll probably like Mists of Avalon. Give it a try. I love it.
And of course the Harry Potter books :D

Re: any good books to read - please recommend
i have to recommend: The hand maid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
& Calculating God by Robert J Sawyer
Short list of some of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors and some of their books. Terry Practhett has a Discworld series, Erikson has the Malazan series, and Bujold the Miles Vorkosigan series. In my opinion, these authors are the BEST at what they do. The books for these authors are the first books, if you like the first ones, you'll love the rest that are in each of their series:
Good Omens - terry pratchett & neil gamen (terry pratchett is superbly funny)
Gardens of the Moon - steven erikson
Warrior's Apprentice - Lois McMaster Bujold
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams

Anybody read the Ramses series by Christian Jacq? I love them.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
The Alchemist is a great book, I've read it about a million times now. For anyone who hasn't read it yet, I'd definitely recommend it.
I just finished reading Waiting for Godot. It's a play, but it's extremely funny, I'd put this on my 'must read' list too. Also recently finished reading Black Creek Crossing by John Saul. I wouldn't recommend it, that's all I'm going to say about that book :-P
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Beloved City: Writings on Lahore, edited by Bapsi Sidhwa. Oxford University Press 2005
Loved part 1 : Era after era and part 4: Lahore Lahore Ai
Small stories and essays by people relating to Lahore, a few too many references to Hera Mandi (or Tibbi, as it is apparantly called) but all in all a great book if you are a Lahori.

re: Tell us about a book!!!
Gosh I have read sooo many books in the past few months:
The Kite Runner - good, but depressing
Londonstani by Gautam Malkani - ending was a shocker for me :D
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck - Story about a rural Chinese family who make it rich. Very interesting and a good read
The Boy Next Door by Meg Cabot - the entire book is set in e-mail format, e-mails exchanged by all the characters involved. Very funny stuff, read it in one day.
The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe - set in 1950s, New York City. Basically the story of "innocent" girls who move to the big city and what happens to them there.
Colony of Unrequited Dreams by William Johnston - the story of Newfoundland ... i'm struggling through this book.
Reading Lolita in Tehran - very interesting and captivating, yet a bit over the top at the same time. Nonetheless, a good read.
... and every single Marian Keyes book published .... I absolutely love her work!
I've ordered City of Djinns and White Moghuls and will provide feedback when I'm done reading those.
re: Tell us about a book!!!

Am reading White Mughals....Very interesting...but slow reading cos the style it is written...none the less a must to know history of Islam/British in India...would recommend it.

re: Tell us about a book!!!
Last year I read Empress of Splendid seasons and the Namesake (for class). they were pretty good actually :k:
re: Tell us about a book!!!
i read the book a few months ago, actually finished it in 10 days...and yep..it was completely worth reading. one thing i have to say about 'a fine balance' is, the characters stay with you a long, long time..even when you've put the book away. cant believe the atrocities that take place so mildly in the streets then end up leaving a scar on so many lives!
