re: Tell us about a book!!!

I don't know if this book has been mentioned because I haven't read gone through all pages in the thread, but "In the country of Men" by Hisham Matar is really good read.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I'm halfway through the book Snow by Orhan Pamuk. It's interesting .... lots of different things going on in this book - poetry, politics, religion, hijabis killing themselves, "Islamists" being attacked by the state, etc. The book takes place in a small town called Kars in Turkey. It is extremely beautifully written.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

my personal fave fiction work is "ALI AND NINO" byKurban Said. its a beautiful story set in Azerbaidjan-it is social, it is romance n it is political in the perfect degrees.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Can you hear the nightingale call? by Anita Rau Badami. Excellent novel.

Set in India and Canada, Can You Hear the Nightbird Call? is the story of three women linked and destroyed by the political turmoil that sweeps through the Punjab first during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, and then in the 1980s when the demand for an independent Sikh state called Khalistan comes into violent existence.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I have started reading "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Relin.

An eye opener for us who only sit back and talk but barely do anything for our country.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Three Cups of Tea is one of my favourite books of all time.
I read it last year and posted about this on this Forum:
Page 11, Post #327
I would love to hear about your most favourite moments in the book.

I wish more Pakistanis know about Americans Like Greg Mortenson. I am trying to e-mail as many Pakistani TV shows as possible to have him as thier guest.
Wishful thinking, I know..but one has to try.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I picked up The Reluctant Fundamentalist from the library a week ago. I picked it up before I read any reviews..I barley glanced at the book jacket. Making the cardinal mistake of judging the book by its cover, I thought this book will be about a Muslim kid who either immigrates to U.S or a second generation Pakistani youth who is converted by 'Radical' imams of his local mosque.
Boy, was I far from the truth.
This book is written very intelligently...Lahoree people are specially going to get a kick out of me..there was some reference made to my neck of the woods (NWFP) and Hamid is a kind of writer that he can dish anything out and we would lap it up....Yup, he is that good.
Hey Mohsin! if by any crazy chance you stumble upon this post...please know you have a devout fan in Washington DC area. We would love to have you as our guest { I cook killer Baryani and nobody in Mid-Atlantic area can touch my hubby's Chabbley Kabobs ( he is from Mardan...my husband that is)}
I belive we'll have some in-teres-ting discussions.

Great book! brother, kep'em coming

Re: any good books to read - please recommend

I see you are also Terry Pratchet fan. I find him to be very creative.

Recently I started reading a book called "The Prize" by Daniel Yergin. This book has won pulitzer prize.

The prize recounts the panoramic history of oil and the struggle for wealth and power that has always surrounded oil. The canvas of this history is enormous - from drilling of the first well in Pennnsylvania through two world wars to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and operation desert storm. The cast extends from wildcatters and rogues to oil tycoons (The making of Rockefeller), and from Winston Churchill and Ibn Saud to George Bush and Saddam Hussein.

It is undoubtedly the defenitive work on the subject of oil and a major contribution to understand last century.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Most favorite moments...hmm..many...ok...
The first one was when he mentions that he lived in his car for an entire year to save money to fulfil the promise he made ith the kids of Pakistan. It just melted my heart.

When he is looking for that typing cafe(?) and meets the pakistani guy who owns a computer cafe. He then teaches him how to use computer and togather they write 500 letters

Then when he realizes that what difference the bridge has made in the liberation of the women of kholti

Advice of Haji Ali

When the leader of waziristan agrees on letting him to open a school

When Haji Ali's granddaughter comes in the jigra meeting and asks him to sponser her futre education... I loved that moment, I think that was his biggest achievement.

The airport scene when he delays his flight 2-4 times... that was so cute...

The positive image of mulans he has portrayed...

oh and when 9/11 took place and people of kholti surrounded his quarter to safeguard him

ahhh... it is just so difficult to pick few moment, every moment is a defining moment in that book.

I so agree with you, we all should be proud of him, what he is doing in our country for our people. I would also love to see him on Pakistani TV.
