It's been a busy summer and I've been limiting myself to books without much girth. Just read "The rug merchant' by Meg Mullins and thorougly enjoyed it.
From the book jacket: Isolated and far from his native Iran, Ushman Khan has worked hard to build a wealthy, reliable clientele for his wares: exquisite hand-woven rugs from his home city of Tabriz. Unexpectedly, he meets Stella, a student who has just bade farewell to her parents en route for an Italian vacation. After Stella, isolated in her own way, finds herself at Ushman’s Manhattan store, they embark on an improbable and powerful romance. Together this American girl from the Deep South and the Iranian aesthete form a tender bond that awakens them both to the possibility of joy in a world full of tragedy.
My favourite critical comments: *The Rug Merchant *is a tale of loneliness and love between an Iranian immigrant and an American college student almost half his age. This description might lead you to expect some sort of Lolita-esque tale - but that is far from the case. It's actually a lovely, melancholy novel that I highly recommend.
On a completely different note, has anybody here read The Secret History by Donna Tartt ( published 1992) If yes, what do you think about it? If you adored it like I did and still do can you recommed something on the same par
TIA and happy reading

Tabish Khair is associate professor in the Department of English, University of Aarhus, Denmark. Check out this Indian author's book - THE BUS STOPPED A lyrical journey through small-town India
Born and educated mostly in Gaya, Bihar, India, he is the author of various books, including the poetry collection, 'Where Parallel Lines Meet' (Penguin, 2000), the study, 'Babu Fictions: Alienation in Indian English Novels' (Oxford UP, 2001)and the novel, 'The Bus Stopped' (Picador, 2004), which was short-listed for the Encore Award. His honours and prizes include the All India Poetry Prize (awarded by the Poetry Society and the British Council) and honorary fellowship (for creative writing) of the Baptist University of Hong Kong.
‘Other Routes’, an anthology of pre-modern travel texts by Africans and Asians, co-edited and introduced by Khair (with a foreword by Amitav Ghosh) and published by Signal Books and Indiana University Press, will be out in November 2005.
Khair is currently completing his next novel, ‘Filming’, which examines memory, guilt and redemption in the backdrop of the Partition of India and the 1940s Mumbai film industry.
The Bus Stopped (Picador, 2004)
"On the surface a book about a bus journey, THE BUS STOPPED is a novel that reflects deeply into the nature and circumstances of human mobility in our modern, unforgiving world." - Siddhartha Deb in OUTLOOK.
"Khair manages to carry of his tale, or rather tales, with something close to aplomb. In the hands of a less gifted or less sensitive writer, the device [of connecting a number of stories through a bus ride] can easily look contrived, and fail to work. But Khair makes it work; he manages to be funny and irreverent, serious and compassionate in turn." - Shiv K. Kumar in THE HINDU
"There is much to enjoy here...the twist at the end is hilarious. Khair's talent is as a miniaturist." - Fiona Hook in THE TIMES
"It's a fine work: short, sweet and brutal." - James Smart in the SUNDAY HERALD
"A lyrical journey through small-town India." -- THE INDEPENDENT
"...allows stories to emerge with immediacy and leisure, with abrupt shafts of humour..." - THE GUARDIAN

"To Rule The Waves" by Arthur Herman. A riveting account of how international trade determined the shape of the modern world, and how the British Royal Navy over 3 centuries dominated trade and revolutionised the world.
I normally love non-fiction, but this was one of the best written books. By focusing on the people as much as the events, Arthur Herman makes you feel as though you are living the history rather than merely reading about it.

Da Vinni Code by Dan Brown
One of the best books I have ever read, a bit different, fast pace, wonderful mix of history, art and religion and some action.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Son of a Witch (sequel to Wicked) by Grgory Maguire ... it was o.k. Not as good as Wicked. In fact, the sequel had so much potential and kind of went no where. The last quarter of the book was extremely disappointing.
I just finished reading the Da Vinci Code as well. It's quite entertaining. Very fast paced, indeed!

I just finished The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks and I have just started The Alchemist. I still haven’t finished Tuesdays with Morrie ![]()
re: Tell us about a book!!!
"The Battle for God" by Karen Armstrong. Probably the most valuable book I have read. Starts from 1400 and details how Judiasm, Christianity and Islam coped with modernity and evolved different religious movements leading to fundamentalism. Exceptionally well researched and the thread of discourse is very immersing. Non fiction book hai lekin for me it was a page turner and i found myself reading it on my walk back home from work.
Definitely going to reread it.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
has anyone read In the Walled Gardens?
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Hinna did you finish reading ‘The Alchemist’ ? Tell me what you think about it.
I loved this book. It was such an easy read. So simple yet so strong. I found it spiritually uplifting. Really there are so many things that we have started doubting these days, depending on scientific facts for each and every thing. Strange but ‘The Alchemist’ actually gave me hope that dreams and omens do tell you things. And then its theme about believing in your dreams and working toward achieving them is so nicely brought out.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
^ umm nope
I haven’t had the chance to get past the intro.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
How are you liking it so far? Can’t wait to read it.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
I am almost done with it...Everyone told me its not worth reading becuz its nothing like first part...But I'am glad I read it...Obviously it is all about same people that were in the first book so how bad can it be. A lot happens in this book.. half of the book is very interestign, I could not put it down. AHhh I hope she comes up with 3rd part :(
I am gonna read all other books by this author...love her writing style.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
just started the kite runner :D
re: Tell us about a book!!!
^Every single student I have in the 10th grade loved that book when we read it. They wouldn't put it down, and most of them finished it before they had to.
I enjoyed it, but I certainly have some issues with it. Overall it's good, though a bit simplistic at times.
Has anyone here read Mama Day by Gloria Naylor? Perhaps my favorite book of all time. Moves me every time I read it. I highly recommend it, but make sure to go in with an open mind.
