The Promise of Murder
by Mignon Eberhart.
It was really cool to read. I couldnt put it down and its not long.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
The EarthSea series by Ursula Le Guin. It was pretty much OK. If you're a fantasy fan, then you'll like them.
The Harry Potter books - yes, I finally read them, and I have to say, they really are an entertaining read. Nothing like Lord of the Rings though of course, but they are fun. And surprisingly, there is some literary depth to them...
His Dark Materials - a series of 3 books. I'm on the last one now. Its pretty good actually. Very deep concepts, and lots of levels of interpretation, if you like those sorts of books.
I got a kick out of The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. Its hilarious and its fantasy fiction.
The Catcher in the Rye - its not fantasy, of course, but I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it actually. Definitely, its not a plot-based book. Its more like "my view on life" type of a book. If you're sick of the absurdity of human behavior, you'll like this.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
^What a coincidence…I am currently reading book 2 of His Dark Materials. I must say PCG, you kinda remind me of Lyra Silvertounge ![]()
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman: I found the main character similar to Arthur Dent in HitchHiker’s Guide. Guy carries around the same “I don’t care anymore” attitude. The story is a lot more darker though but also funny sometimes (Douglas Adams style). Good read.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
"Conversations with God" Books 1-3 by Neale Walsch
I would say it's not for the faint of heart or close-minded. It's very non-denominational but there are some aspects that people of different religions may not subscribe to. Give it a chance and if you're open enough... you'll love these books. My favorite is the first book.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
The "Art of Happiness" by Dr. Howard C. Cutler using his conversations with the Dalai Lama. It shows you some aspects of buddhism but it's not forced on you and and the concepts are not strictly geared towards that particular religion. Initially, you would think it would just give you the usual blah about achieving happiness but it actually makes sense. I'm not saying what it asks of you is easy but it's a different way of looking at things.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
A couple of books from Mitch Albom are great... "Tuesday with Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."
I know Dan Brown's books have been mentioned here but to those who haven't read it, I encourage you to read "Angels and Demons" first before "The Da Vinci Code." Some people think the latter is great but, actually, the first is even better.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Can anyone suggest a good book on islamic spirituality? Besides the koran of course. I have read a little bit on sufism but I haven't found one that really impressed me. I prefer it to be in english. Thanks...
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Ok, i'm starting on the alchemist. anyone read it?
re: Tell us about a book!!!
I'm nearly finished reading A Fine Balance.
This book came highly recommended by a lot of people.
It is one of the most depressing books I have ever read in my life. It's one traumatic experience after another. In fact, it is so depressing that I find it really hard to believe even though it is apparently based on a true story.
I'm nearly done, another hundred pages or so. I will read Son of a Witch next, which is the sequel to Wicked.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
I’m very much fond of classic English literature, and I’d recommend any work by Charles Dickens. His novels are so far superior to any other english-language novelist.
I had already read Great Expectations some years back. Recently finished Pickwick Papers and am reading Oliver Twist now. David Copperfield and Bleak house are next
great stuff :k:
re: Tell us about a book!!!
the autobiography of Malcolm X, it's really good! I found it really deep esp since it's all true
re: Tell us about a book!!!
*an-shar'jaa ka jasoos *by maulana ishtiaque ahmed.
Great book!

re: Tell us about a book!!!
I'm on Philip Pullman's The Amber Spyglass (3rd novel in His Dark Materials series).
Finally, its been disclosed as to what "Dust" is and why everyone is scrambling to figure out how it works, and why Lyra Silvertongue is so important, etc etc.
Okay so this is what it looks like: God is a fraud, and 2 Gay Angels who have fallen out of his favor are looking to overthrow him, along with their other friends. Lyra Silvertongue is supposed to be the new Eve. Whether she sins like the first Eve will determine the rest of mankind's history.
I mean really now. This is like the most blasphemous piece of literature I've ever read, and its a children's novel.
