PS> Allam is shair-e-mashriq but definitely he is always called Pakistan's national poet no doubt about it and on the other hand Ghalib who is muslim is definitely a Indian poet.

lol...thank you for mediating between the warring factions haha...
why don't u open another thread where u narrow it down to ur city so this way there will be no sea of poets to mention and also u will get to know about great poets who did NOT chose to be famous or who were not given due acknowledgment. :)**
Re: Tell famous poets from your country
He died before the birth of India too.
ha ha.. no matter how you want to spin it the fact remains that he was an Indian. Republic of India as in modern country state is not too old, like all the countries in the world but still India is and was India.
Following your logic arabs never attacked India, british never ruled India. with little effort you can find many ridiculous examples.
You can call him your national poet ( infect you can call any person your national poet be it me or shakespere ), like we do, but you cannnot call him a pakistani. :)
Re: Tell famous poets from your country
Rabindra Nath Tagore, a Nobel Prize Winner
+1.
I am not a big time poetry fan, but lately i started loving the simplicity of kabir and nirankari poets of his time. they are so meaningful yet so simple.

He was Indian by nationality and by birth he was born in India. But KAKA his poetry is in Urdu not in hindi and Hindi is national language of India. You cannot call him your national poet.

bhai mere, we claim urdu too. urdu has nothing to do with religion or country for that matter. India has hundreds of language and urdu is considered one of them.
He is called our national poet because he was a big time poet of pre-independence India and also he wrote our national song i.e. saare jaha se accha..
I have no problems if you guys consider it to be your national poet too, after all we share a common history of thousands of years and any pre-partition person should be shared as well.

i dont know what is the defination of national poet but as far as i know anyone whose poems are selected for national songs is a national poet.
tagore wrote national anthem i.e. jana gana mana
bankim chandra chatarjee wrote national song i.e. vande matam ( i guess you would call it milli tarana)
iqbal wrote another national song i.e. sare jaha se accha hindustan hamara
above mentioned are three national songs as per my knowledge.

I don't think so because our national anthem is written by Hafiz Jalhenderi and he is not our national poet. I don't know what are the terms and conditions for national poet but looking at Iqbal and every one knows him as Pakistan's national poet I can think it might have to do with your poetry written in your language or about your country. Well I should search it now.

My Indian friends often tell me that Hindi is not a 'national' language of India, its an 'official language'.
Re: Tell famous poets from your country
ghalib, meer, faiz, iqbal, faraz, and so many others. i consider them all from my country. this doesn't mean indians can't claim them as their own if they want to. the whole buk buk about whether a poet is from india or pakistan is meaningless. ghalib and meer are the best urdu poets in my opinion. although i prefer ghalib.
