He was Indian by nationality and by birth he was born in India. But KAKA his poetry is in Urdu not in hindi and Hindi is national language of India. You cannot call him your national poet.

bhai mere, we claim urdu too. urdu has nothing to do with religion or country for that matter. India has hundreds of language and urdu is considered one of them.
He is called our national poet because he was a big time poet of pre-independence India and also he wrote our national song i.e. saare jaha se accha..

I have no problems if you guys consider it to be your national poet too, after all we share a common history of thousands of years and any pre-partition person should be shared as well.
