Re: Technology and your child
^^ good points Queer. However I have to disagree with the multitasking part. Our kids DO need to learn how to multitask. I'll elaborate in a bit. MIL's call :@:.

Re: Technology and your child
i am a big skeptic about multi-tasking. i am yet to see anyone, man or woman, do two useful things in a good manner at the same time. bartan maanjing and yelling at hubby is pretty much the best it gets. :P but i'm curious about what you have to say about it!
Re: Technology and your child
I never used any technology until I was 14 and it hasn't done me any harm. I can keep up with it all. I m with hareem on this one.
the thing I am most adamant about is no individual laptops or TVs in bedroom ever for all my nephews and nieces. Whenever they try to sway their parents with bull about learning I am like yeah right, use the family laptop u can learn plenty from it.
Re: Technology and your child
Btw nik great thread.
Re: Technology and your child
I feel that bringing children to all of the technology that we have is a good thing as long as the children understand HOW that technology works and HOW that technology is improving their lives.
For example if we talk about the calculator , a student must first learn how to add 1+1 on the paper rather using calculator. The same applies in writing , a student must know how to write on the paper. My field is IT ,I do programming, what I learned at uni was to type all code and run it on machine, I found some difficulty in learning computer languages.Later,I was told of to write the code on the paper first , it 'll make your mind work and yes it did. This way, I started to write small programs myself.Whatever, I looked at, Programming was on my mind, I used to think in my mind how and which computer language would be more suitable to solve this issue. This way, i developed my skills. When you relay on machine then machine does more work for you , your mind works less.
Also, there are few disadvantages , too much use of technology isn't good.Kids might get addicted to it , they 'll miss practical stuff in life. Weak eye sight and obesity are common issues for kids especially those who don't like to move due to their addiction in games etc. I have taught IT at Secondary school for 10 weeks ,what I experienced there was so horrible.Kids would go on games websites, car's websites ,fb and browse their favorite football team during lesson. Teacher used to get control over their system or I used to block such sites on their system. During break time, kids didn't go for lunch or short break, they preferred to play games in computer lab.
I use computers everyday at uni , when I get home I dislike the idea of using laptop again. I have got fb ,email app on my ph but I have kept the notification off, dislike the idea of using technology at home again. It's like whole day technology, pcs,net in my feet , I get tired of it.
Wonder why, I am an old member on GS but I never tried to post in IT section here on GS just because I never wanted too, kinda been tired of tech. I do regret sometime for joining IT because most of the time I have to sit and work where as my sister works in NHS,moving around at hospital has kept her quite active and fit. And me being an Asian, I havn't got any Asian girl at my course, it sucks. I am the only Asian girl among 3 other girls , 2 are white , one is black and rest are boys.
whatever I have explained above is my own experience being in IT. I love balanced life practical and techi plus multitasking is good.
Re: Technology and your child
A little different flavored thread for this forum. The objective is to discuss the impact of technology and not your parenting style, hence the choice of this forum.
There's an ongoing debate (on GS as well) on how much technology our kids should be exposed to. There's one set of parents that think we should stick to old school and that technology is "bad" for the tender minds. And there's the other group that likes to go with the flow.
In my home, my kids are loving technology. They can operate Apple devices and Android devices, know the differences, are reading on e-readers, and have learned to enjoy what the world is bringing their way. But they still do read paper and write on paper and can make smooth conversation with humans. Whatever they do with their gadgets is supervised by mom or dad and have limits to how much is allowed and what is permissible.
But I love to see their excitement when we walk into an Apple Store and my 9 year old usually has tons of questions for the sales rep. I'm teaching her how to use different software so she can develop her skills more effectively. I know this may not happen in every family set up but given that my husband and I like to keep up with technology, the kids are involved in our lifestyle choices.
But why is there so much resistance to technology from some parents is the question I'd like to ask? Why do people think that if my kid can read on Kindle, she will not read a paper book. Or of she types, she will not be able to write by hand. Why can't we broaden our capacities instead of being stuck in a rut and then later, when you're forced to assimilate, you blame the system or get frustrated?
Please discuss. Not diss or cuss. :)
I guarantee this, your girls could become a programmer or a software engineer easily due to their interest at young age and plus mumy's addiction in IT,Sorry I had to use the word addiction. :p
Re: Technology and your child
I bet you work in IT? haha tired of it? Yes, multitasking is good. :k:
Re: Technology and your child
nah man, im just a glorified janitor. but i can write some mean C code for embedded systems. ![]()
Re: Technology and your child
Ayyh C? Noooooooooooo. Talk to me about JAVA.
If you know that, you are passed. :k:
Re: Technology and your child
OK phew. That was one long phone call.
Now let’s talk about multitasking. And no we are not talking about yelling at the husband and frying pakoray at the same time
…though it seems so realistic. I can work on a booklet I’m making on QuarkXpress, chat with a friend about upgrading my OS, and fry pakorey at the same time, AND the pakorey are crispy and delicious, I learn all about the upgrade and do a skillful layout on my document. That’s because I enjoy all 3 tasks. And this is a very simple and recent example.
Now what I need to teach my children is to enjoy and appreciate what they have in hand so they can do a good job at it. Tasks should not feel like a burden. It’s all about the attitude.
I know women who can’t do laundry and listen to music at the same time. That’s because their attitude is bad, period. See what I’m saying?
Technology and your child
It kinda freaks me out when my 3yr old cousin knows how to use a laptop(skype, surf, games) and an iphone but cant read! She opened up contacts on her dad’s iphone and asked me to find a particular name so she could make a call.
She recognizes the logos but cant read:smack2:
Technology does affect handwriting. Hubz has such a bad handwriting that once he sent me a letter from out of town and MIL thought someone kidnapped him..cause the writing was so bad that MIL thought ‘zarur ksi jahil kidnapper ki he aesi writing hoskti hai’ ![]()
In this day and age, we just cant prevent our kids from using technology. If its not provided and learned at home, they would know about it from somewhere else. I wanted to keep kiddo away from tech..but she just cant take her eyes off the tv(where ever she sees it) or someone’s cellphone..heck shes just 4m and if shes sitting in my lap and I dont let her watch nursery rhymes on my phone, she cries and when I play it she stops crying:chai:
Re: Technology and your child
LOL!!
It's all about the balance, sahr. It's not about replacing physical play or actual reading and writing but adding on. My concern stems out of the resistance people have towards technology, like it's an evil monster.
Technology and your child
Oh and yes my cousin’s daughter(2.5yrs) has her own personal laptop..now thats too much:pcg:
When kid bro was just around 4years old he knew how to play his fav movie and bring it to his fav(read vulgar) scene:vivo: since then he has had his personal cellphone(now an iphone), laptop, psp and xbox(kinect) but i dont see him sitting infront of tech all day long..he loves physical activities more..maybe it depends on the child aswell:confused:
Re: Technology and your child
^^ Now we are moving on to the parenting aspect, but I'd blame parents who allow their kids to do "whatever."
Technology and your child
Nik my last point was that kid bro is equally good at physical play that he is at tech..lets just say he is more talented than I as a kid was..cause he knows both..just as u said 'its about adding on'
So I duno why parents think tech might hurt their child's development
Re: Technology and your child
haha there are people who find it hard to do other things without listening music even studying ,it’s all because they are addicted to it.
Niks, what I said was my experience,I am in it,I cn’t run away,I have used it so I don’t like to use it much, its like I have to study,I have to do it but you it’s all about your interest, your choice.

Nothing harms just keep balance.

I'm not sure what they'll become.
I'll tell you, when I used to work full time at a hospital, part of what I used to do was putting together presentation material for the physicians. It was so hard for some of them to do a simple and effective slideshow right from a laptop hooked up to a projector instead of loading the 35mm slides on a carousel and hooking it up to a projector which was not only costly but once u got a slide, u can't change it at that point. The tech savvy ones were happy and moved up quickly. What I'm trying to say is that if we train our kids to adapt early on in life, whatever profession they are in, they will assimilate easily. There's technology everywhere. Look at schools now. My 6 year old operates a smart board with ease. She has to. It's the need of the times. In the words of the Borg, resistance is futile!

Yes I'm sorry I missed that part. You're absolutely right!
Re: Technology and your child
People were saying that ebooks and technology adaptation by older adults is going to be slow. But now I see that everywhere. Very soon you won't be able to go out of the house without knowing tech. Don't compare tomorrow with how our training was. The rate of change in technology is getting faster. What happened in 50 years started happening in 10 years, what used to change in 5 years now progress in 1. Think about it, 7 years ago there was no iPhone, 5 years ago there was Facebook.
Amish still live on, don't bring that culture into our community!
