Team of the 80's

When thinking of the team of the 90’s for a previous thread, I struggled as all my favourite players were at their peak in the 80’s. So here is my top team of the 80s:

 1. Gawaskar
 2. G Greenidge
 3. Viv Richards
 4. Javed Miandad
 5. Alan Border
 6. R Marsh (w)
 7. Kapil Dev
 8. Imran Khan (C)
 9. R Hadlee
 10. M Marshall
 11. M Holding

My #11 was off his peak in the 80s and could have been one of the following old timers - Willis, Thompson, Lillee, Roberts.

Is that a Test or one-day team?

Looks a strong XI, I might've put Ian Botham in there.

It looks like a test team ,right .If it is so,my best 11 are :-
:O

 1. Gawaskar
 2. G Bycott
 3. Viv Richards
 4. Javed Miandad
 5. Ian Bothom
 6. R Marsh (w)
 7. Kapil Dev
 8. Imran Khan (C)
 9. R Hadlee
 10. M Marshall
 11. M Holding

12.Abdul Qadir
[li]Sunil Gavaskar
[/li][li]Desmond Haynes
[/li][li]Ian Chappel
[/li][li]Clive Lloyd
[/li][li]Viv Richards
[/li][li]Dean Jones
[/li][li]Imran Khan
[/li][li]Allan Knott
[/li][li]Malcolm Marshall
[/li][li]Joel Garner
[/li][li]Bhagwat Chandreskar
[/li]
In the 80s we did not have separate teams for tests & one dayers so this is a common team, mainly for tests but also world beaters in the exhibition one dayers.

I did not include Ian Botham in there because Imran Khan did not rate him - I go along with my hero !! Plus you don't want too many all rounders. No spinners either, but then WI never had any and they were unbeatable.

Well, in my team, there would always be a place for Saleem Malik.

Salim Malik was great but he was at his prime between 87-93, he didn't dominate the whole decade.
Though it was a close call between him and Dean Jone, Dean Jones in my mind was a better batsman than Malik.

Chandra,Knott,Chappel in team of 80s. :rotfl:

Also. Dean Jones doesnt belong here if we are talking of TESTs.if we are talking of ODIS then many of them dont belong there.

1 Haynes (WI)
2 Grenidge (WI) (I would never disturb this great opening pair)
3 Gavaskar (Ind)
4 Miandad (Pak)
5 Richards (WI)
6 Dujon (WI)
7 Imran (Pak)
8 Kapil (Ind)
9 Hadlee (NZ)
10 Marshall (WI)
11 Garner (WI)

Bhai saheb where did he ask for test teams only and plus in those days players played in both forms of the game.
And please go look at the eras these players played in.

Umair bhai those three mentioned were predominantly the players of 70's. Alan Knott and Ian Chappel I think retired in the 70's.

well they played during some portion of 80s.But they are off the prime.

Umair: if you think Dean Jones,Ian CHappel,Knott,Chandar can be in team of 80s then its fine with me. Its your team yaara. :p

What are you talking about?
Dean Jones only played in 80s and some 90s, mainly 80s in his prime.
Link

PS Dean jones was an awesome test batsman but his one day talent over shadowed his test batting, kind of like Matthew Hayden of today.

I appologize about chappel and Bhagt Chandreskar.

Great team. :k:
Just lacks one spinner.Probably Qadir can replace either Kapil or Garner.

There were many player sin 80s which were much better than Dean Jones when it comes to TEST cricket. So if you are talking about test cricket then this guy cannot be there when we have Zaheer,Vengsarkar,Gooch,Gower,Richi Richardson,Azharuddin.

Stats doesnt always say enough.

I am talking about mixture of test and one day cricket, I don't think the initiator of this thread asked for test team only or one day, I am judging their performance overall.
The guys mentioned above were very good also but only in one form of the game.

What about Miandad?

Yes Dean Jones was really classy.Ricky Ponting always reminds me of him.

Yep - I asked for a team of the 80s. In the 80s we did not have this "nakhra" of having different teams for tests & ODIs. To be honest there is no need for that distinction either in my opinion.

However Dean Jones was really good for only a couple of years or so (I think) therefore I personally would not include him in my list- but as it is your team, up to you !!
