when you say 500 mullas, do you mean 500 scholars or 500 bearded guys do namaaz and read quran. I apoligize to turn it into religious conversation but the school of thought those mullas showed the pleasure have some extreme (and not acceptable by other school of thoughts) definitions of Risalat and Nubuwat and from their POV, if you dont believe that Prophet was aalimul-ghaib then you are gustakh-e-rasool.
I don't understand why educated people continue to attempt to find excuses that will mitigate the blame on the guilty party. The issue is quite simple ... the body guard was a religious nutjob and all those other religious nutjobs that are supporting him are 100% in the wrong. If you are trying to find ways to justify or explain such behaviour in the guise of false rationality, you are part of the problem. Why do you think extremism has increased in Pakistan as time has gone by? Quite clearly the majority of the population is not extremist. However, the majority was apathetic to extremism, failing to recognize that it is something that needs to be rooted out.
If this killing is a warning, than it should act as a warning in regards to what can happen to important people if serious strides aren't made to eradicate extremism. The governor of Punjab was as diplomatic and non-divisive in his stance regarding the issue as one could possibly be while holding such a stance ... however, he still got condemned and eventually murdered for his viewpoint. This proves that there is no "diplomatic" route left. The only way to get rid of extremism is to stop beating around the bush and declare a full on war ... a war not just on extremist individuals but extremist sympathizers and extremist viewpoints in general. Unfortunately no political party in Pakistan has the testicular fortitude to carry out such measures so I expect extremism to continue to grow in magnitude until some sort of dictorial regime finds its way into power. Maybe it is time for the military to clean up the mess that was created by Zia ul Haq during his tenure.
