Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I am sure all the Humsafar fans have seen Mahira Khan’s latest chai commercial. Did any of you think about the message they were putting across?

I just read this review of the commercial on “Drama Pakistanii” and it’s so true:

***OK, so everyone is literally going ga-ga over this television commercial of Tapal Family Mixture, which features none other than Mahira Khan. No doubt, she has done a great job and her expressions are really spot on! However, for the most part of this TVC, I was like – What? WHAT? WHAT?

Granted that some parts of the commercial are nice and aww-going, but somebody tell me this. Have all journalists, who have written long and hard about the tea-tray/tea-trolley culture in Pakistan, wasted their time and energy? I was so happy to see a university scene where Mahira finds out she has gotten a position. But then when she gets home, a dupatta is draped on her head and a tray handed to her. What kind of a message is that putting across?**

**For only a fraction of Pakistan’s female population does marriage follow education. For others, it is a long and dreaded journey of carrying tea trays and pushing tea trolleys, having to answer awkward and downright insulting questions, being looked up and down rather obviously and then, a long string of rejections that destroy self-esteem and lead to depression. Can someone tell Tapal that it is not so hale and hearty – that a wedding does not follow ONE round of tea-tray carrying and a “glance” exchanged over a tea cup does not lead to a fairy tale romance?

Tapal is a company I recommend to others! Honestly, I do! I tell others to support the local economy and drink Tapal instead of other multinational brands. It is a shame when the same company insults the sentiments of millions of Pakistani women who are probably prettier and more eligible than Mahira – and are still waiting for a good proposal (after being rejected multiple times on one pretext or the next).**

My simple appeal to all those who are posting and re-posting this advertisement on Facebook – look beyond the apparent, and understand how such advertisements simply reinforce a system so many female journalists are trying to change in Pakistan.

To those who have designed this advertisement – you could have easily shown a university graduation and then a wedding, without bringing the tea tray process in the middle. Honestly, there are many avenues where the groom’s parents can “meet” their potential daughter-in-law.

Honestly, Tapal, I am really disappointed.*

I didn’t realize journalists in Pakistan have been campaigning against the tea trolly process … so why do we still see it in the West amongst desis?

Was anybody disappointed when they saw this commercial?

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

Tapal knows that a woman belongs in the kitchen. And so should you. :chai: (emoticon fully intended)

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

Those chai trolleys are made for girls who are short. They don't make trolleys for girls who are 5'8" or taller. You know how weird it looks to be tall and push one of those things?

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

can someone post the video?

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I have yet to come across and article written by these ‘writers’ to condemn ads showing disrespect to teachers, ads showing girls/guys dancing with reveling-more-than-hiding type of cloths, ad showing youth how to fool your parents. all they have issue with is why girl taking chai to guests…

:chai:

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

^ I haven’t seen those ads, probably cause they aren’t popular and being re-posted everywhere …

I don’t think the vast majority of people even think about the message being put across when they saw this commercial. Most people were like, “wah ji, Mahira Khan … I’m a Humsafar fan!”.

I agree with you 100% on the thoughtlessness of this ad. Even as it is glitzy and glamorous, it confirms outdated stereotypes, and sends wrong messages. This kind of regressive advertising is not something that we as an educated and sensible audience should condone. If we are to move forward as a society we have to raise our voices and strongly condemn these kinds of mesages being put across to our largely unsuspecting audence, many of whom cannot look beyond the beautiful packaging of these ads.”

I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw a problem …

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

^Mehnaz.....farz karo that the larki doesn't go through the chai serving session (as that's the case in some families)......do you really think that it would stop the guy's family from judging the girl? Heck they might even think that her failure to serve chai means she's not "sughar" enough....and they would STILL eye her up and down and assess her. Both parties get judged.

What's up with the anger toward Mahira Khan and saying that there are scores of girls prettier than her? I'm not a fan of hers, but I don't hate her either. She most likely (like other celebs) did it for the money. And why does all the blame go to her? How about the director of the commerical...how about the other actors that willingly agreed to participate....aren't they also guilty of encouraging tolerance of the trolley practice? There are other messages (some of them far worse) that commercials send out......as Decent has said above.

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

Agreed. Mahira K did it for the moneys, if she didn't do it, someone else would have.

HOWEVER, as someone who has had to see her sisters and several friends go through this process, the 'tea-trolley' anger is, in my opinion, well justified. Unfortunately, due to the nature of rishtey processes (and it's limits), I'm not sure what else can be done?

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

:mirch: you are making mountain out of molehills. In our culture, it is just one halal way to interact with your potential spouse.

**Did any of you think about the message they were putting across? **
@Mehnaz The message they are conveying the awesomeness of tea which made her baat pakki.

***Have all journalists, who have written long and hard about the tea-tray/tea-trolley culture in Pakistan, wasted their time and energy?
***:smack: Why should journalists waste their time in writing against tea-trolley culture?

Writer’s whole anger is against those insulting questions, but that does not mean trolley culture is evil thing. Why this article mixing two different things. and one more important thing, rishta process is more than tea thing. Yeah tea could help two families to understand the culture of household and many time rishta is pakkafied on tea too. so please stop spreading hate against tea trolley culture.

Was anybody disappointed when they saw this commercial?
@Mehnaz No, I didnt.

:snooty:

p.s. :flower1:

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

RV, the writer clearly expressed their frustration towards the people who designed the ad campaign. Really, it wouldn't have been so bad if they made a few adjustments like showing her graduate university. What was the point in showing she got accepted in the first place?

STA :D I did not write the article. LOL

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

Its good to see First world girls dealing with first world problems.

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I edited my post. :@:

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

Wayn wayn wayn…Where was the tea trolley in the ad?

So called journalists have nothing better to do than writing third class articles. Deliberately showing they are ‘liberal’ ‘against old fasioned culture’ and they find an ad on tea as the biggest threat on freedom of educated women. Great job! :hehe:

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I didn't see any trolley in the ad.

To me the whole chai scene looked like a copy of Sonam Kapoor's chai scene in masakali song from the movie Delhi 6. Thats the first thing that came to my mind. :D

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I saw this ad yesterday for the first time on tv, and honestly I don’t see anything wrong with it :k:

Or you can analyze it further:

  • Why did they only use pretty fair tall girls for the add?
  • Why is it about a rich family?
  • Why are the male models so handsome?
  • Why does that old man have a moustache?
  • Why is that old man even played by a man?

Writer of this article had too much spare time. And also Diwana has a point with what he said.

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

This journalist is definitely wasting her time when most girls in our society can't think beyond how lovely Mahira's clothes are and most guys are firm believers of old customs no matter how oppressive these are.
I saw the ad and I failed to understand the excitement behind reposting of this ad everywhere.

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

I think you should all write your views on the ad where the article is posted.

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

calm down, its not a “so called journalists”…just some one who reviews dramas and i guess commericals too..if u would visit the site/forum often, youd know! =-)

also they need to make more commercials of girls meeting guys in universities! lol

if they used the ad for a campaign then i guess the whole chai scene is messed up as that is not how rishtas really happen!
but if its just a chai commercial, then enjoy the commerical go buy the chai and drink some! =D

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

the excitement was that mahira khan is in the commericial, oh and her lovely clothes! =)

Re: Tapal Chai Commercial (Mahira Khan)

i agree! especially since u dont have to go thru the hassle of signing up to leave a post! =)
