It holds true for more than most people’s preferences.
Most girls do prefer taller guys to shorter ones and guys prefer fair girls to kaali ones.
Is it purely cultural or it could have something to do with genetic programming as well?
Also, preference of fair skin is somehow villified a lot more than preference for a tall guy - at least from what i read on this site. Why do you think that is?

i think the difference is that not a lot of guys are wasting money on make-me-taller products. besides, short guys dont want tall girls while dark guys keep demanding fair girls. vat gene pool do?

I think wanting a tall guy certainly goes beyond desi culture. Being tall and well built equals to being able to protect better physically. I can't say the same about men wanting fairer women. However, most men I believe would prefer a prettier, womanly body over fair skin.

If dark guys keep demanding fair girls, it is likely that their offspring will be in between dark and fair, or tan rather. If the pattern continues, eventually, everyone will be tan. After a while, there won’t be any fair girls to covet. Problem solved, queer jaan.

that would work if fair girl + dark guy => fair girl offspring.
unfortunately, offspring can be pretty much any shade in such a case. so, gene pool is pretty damn viscous when it comes to skin color. and this is the basis of the caste system - people of the same shade of skin = same caste strata = appropriate marriage material.

Almost ALL the paki guys I know are more fair than their wives. Their wives are darker yet absolutely stunning beauties. It happens ALL THE TIME. It's 2014 for goodness sake.
Features and physical beauty matters more than skin color. Some of the most beautiful girls I know have a darker complexion!

My sister's husband is a shade or two lighter than my sister. So yes, I have seen that too. But I have also seen desis obsessing over fair skin. My cousin in Pakistan once said to me, you could go without washing your face for days because you are already white. -___-

one of the advantages of being chocolate colored is you can eat chocolate and not need to wipe your face after.

My brother’s ex was quite a bit darker than him.. we thought she was gorgeous but we did hear comments that he ‘could have done better’

As, historically, fair skin was considered beautiful or associated with beauty on the subcontinent, is it possible that people use "fair" as a euphemism for "attractive" and don't literally mean fair? The reason I ask this is that I've heard the term fair used to describe people who are not really "fair" per say but are quite attractive.
