Not following it does make any rights wrong or vice versa. He may just have an abundance of knowledge in regards to Islam, but due to his personal reason, he may choose not to follow it.. that does not make anything he says less valid as opposed to what your 5 time worshipping Mullah has to say.

ppl be sure you research things on your own and look up verses that are posted over the net...there are many people out there the want to get the wrong message across.....intentionally or unintentionally .......it's still wrong!! Just because someone posts a verse and gives u a reference doesnt make it right...unless u cross reference it for yourself.

Andy you didnt mention that in what perspective you want the answer.
If you are muslim, like to follow islam in everyday life and looking for an islamic point of view about engagment and taking to your fiancee then there is no concept of engagment in islam hence you are namahram to her until you and her are in Nikkah and islam has very strict rules about meeting and having conversations with namahram people. Muslim are not allowed to talk to opposite sex Unnesessarily or in a manner which may arouse some sexual feelings and we all know what kind of coversation a soon to be married couple have.So clearly it is a no no in islam.
Now if islamic ruling is not a problem for you and you are engaged to some girl and wants to talk to her ,to know her then you must consider her opinion about this also and if she is ok with it then sure you can talk and walk as much as you want.
