KOHAT: The Taliban on Wednesday night demolished 11 houses of the Sikh community in the Orakzai Agency for refusing to pay ‘Jazia’.

The action was ordered by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief for Orakzai Agency, Hakeemullah Mehsud, after the deadline given to the Sikh community for payment of Jazia passed on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Sikh community had postponed its decision about vacating the area following the demand of the Tehrik-i-Taliban for payment of ‘Jazia’ being non-Muslims for their protection.

They gathered in the Merozai area to finalise their decision for leaving the area, but a dispute erupted over the issue among them and the meeting was postponed till Thursday.

The Taliban had asked the Sikh community living in the tribal area for centuries earlier this month to pay annual Jazia because ‘Sharia had been enforced in the area and every non-Muslim had to pay protection money’.

The Sikh community comprising 30 to 35 families shifted from the Feroze Khel area to the nearby Merozai in Lower Orakzai Agency because they could not arrange Rs150 million demanded by the Taliban.

The Taliban had forcibly occupied shops of two Sikh businessmen, Sewa Singh and Kalak Singh, and houses of several Sikhs to force them to pay Jazia. Later, the Sikh community refused to pay Jazia and decided to leave Orakzai and settle in some other area.

Most of tribal families belonging to a particular sect have also migrated to different parts of Hangu and Kohat due to the fear of Taliban.

^^^ oppression never pays & nor can you oppress people forever. More you oppress them the more they will rebel. Its a human nature. Very good example is Iranian revolution. Most Iranians are no doubt conservative & nationalist, but they're also fed with their Ayatollahs. Eventually, when people had enough of it they will throw out religious clowns.

Re: Taliban raze houses of Sikhs in Orakzai

So what is the excuse this time???
Someone should ask Sufi if this is part of his Shariah as well that each and every non muslim or even a bad muslim should be kicked out or killed????

They have to leave Pakistan or accept Islam. In the olden days many Hindus and Sikhs had no option but to accept Islam to avoid paying huge taxes under Islamic rule. Akbar wanted to abolish the 'jaziya' but was criticised for being not a good Muslim.

Jaziya is one of the reason Islam spread in Indian subcontinent.

This is disgusting, pathetic.

If you want to vent hatred for past 'jaziya' please use separate thread, thanks.

These taliban idiots are up against innocent Sikhs who are in miniscule minority. I don't understand in which book of Islam it is written that hapless and defenceless people should be tortured. You are brave if you keep the heart of brave. Because those Sikh families can not defend themselves then you get the license to torture them. If you are powerful enough then go and fight with national army why do you fight a barehanded person with heavy artillery. This whole episode shows cowardice and blank brains of talibans. All sane people should curse these illiterate, brainless, wild jahils.

absolutely animal. actually, animals are more civilized.

Re: Taliban raze houses of Sikhs in Orakzai

Pashtuns I have met had always prided themselves on how well they treated minority Sikh community in the tribal areas living their from before pakistan was created, but now taliban are even erasing this rightfully proud chapter of their history.

Re: Taliban raze houses of Sikhs in Orakzai

This is not Pakhtun culture. The Taliban culture is an alien culture. In fact we cannot even call it a "culture" it is more like a virus or a disease. They absorb the worst elements of local "culture" and combine it with a crude understanding of Islam and end up with beheadings, limb cuttings and suicide bombings as the primary tools of trade.

About fifteen years ago, I had a chance to visit Delhi to one of my cousins. He arranged a nice sightseeing tour for me. I went to see Surajkund some 20 Km from Delhi at a place called Faridabad. There is a beautiful lake called Suraj kund. It was the hot month of May. I was strolling near the lake. I saw about 10 sikh youngsters sitting near the lake with bear bottles in their hands and dipping the bottles to cool into the lake,s water. They were speaking in a strange language. I went near to them and tried to recognise the language. To my surprise I found it was pushto. I went near to one of them. I asked how is it that all of you are speaking in a language which is spoken in Pakistan and not in India. The Sikh youth replied that they all were pakistanis. I didn't disclose my identity. I again asked in which place of Pakistan did they live. He replied that they were from Peshawar. He thought me to be Indian and said that you Indians have ill notions about minorities in Pakistan. They are all well off. Pakistanis treat them with respect. Nowhere did they feel inconvenience in Pakistan. I asked whether he wants to settle in India. He said my mulk is jannat. I cannot even dream of leaving Pakistan.
Will that sikh gentleman repeat the same words today. Talibans you are making this mulk a living dozakh for humanity.

Baba Farid said so 800 years ago, and the sikhs have carried his verses in their hearts for over five hundred years.

Its time to bring these agencys into proper Pakistan, or conversely disown this area and let Nato handle it.

Re: Taliban raze houses of Sikhs in Orakzai

Sorry to say, but these Sikh families are just paying the price for choosing to stay back in Pakistan. It was their choice to stay back in an Islamic country.

They are lucky that something like this has happened after 62 years.

yes, you should be sorry, for your inability to distinguish the best of human perseverance from the worst of its stock.

Re: Taliban raze houses of Sikhs in Orakzai

^ I admire human perseverance, but there is a difference between perseverance and stupidity.

Pakistan was formed for Muslims...what were these Sikh families expecting ?

Was there a requirement for all non-muslims to leave Pakistan that you issued, that I and most of the country is unaware of ?

So you are saying the Sikhs would be better served trusting the Hindu majority India and their sense of justice and system of law governing minorities than that of Pakistan. That they didnt realize our inevitable surge of hate, they were at fault for trusting the Muslims majority of Pakistan to ever grow into an all accommodating and tolerant nation(or grow back into).
