Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

Mullah Omar was never on FBI list

WASHINGTON: The US capital was abuzz with claims and counter-claims since Tuesday morning that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has removed the name of Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar from its list of ‘most wanted terrorists’.

The report, attributed to unidentified officials but not backed by reliable sources, claimed that the US decision to remove his name from the list reflected Washington`s desire to improve ties with the Taliban insurgents.

Last week, US officials confirmed that they had held talks recently with Taliban representatives in Qatar and Germany.

The US also supported a move to open a Taliban political office in Qatar, which will serve as an outpost for the outlawed insurgent movement.

Mullah Omar, the founder of the Taliban movement, has been in hiding since the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan toppled his regime.

US officials earlier claimed that he was one of the original planners of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The US invaded Afghanistan to end the Taliban rule because of its alleged link to Al Qaeda, whose chief Osama bin Laden masterminded the 9/11 attacks. Bin Laden was killed in a US raid on his compound in Abbottabad on May 2.

Since last month, however, US officials have begun dis-tancing the Taliban from Al Qaeda, saying that they invaded Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda extremists and not the Taliban.

Although the claim that Mullah Omar has been removed from FBI`s most wanted list has not been denied by US officials, a respectable US news magazine, The Atlantic, pointed out in a post on its site that the Taliban leader was never on this list.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson, when asked to comment on the claimed, confirmed to various US media outlets that Mullah Omar was never on the list.

But he stays on a State Department list of foreign terrorists, which also offers cash reward for his capture.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

the american/nato terrorists and their apologist minions all out to defend themselves... on a news and bulletin board offensive, that is.

the "real terrorists" on the other hand seem to be giving them a good run to their money, and trying harder not to let them get away in one piece.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

Not quite, they are losing the war in Afghanistan and now want to cut and run, hence suddenly Omar is no longer a "threat"

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

what would winning the war in afghanistan be, in your opinion?

the only reason to be there was to destroy al-qaeda which also meant dismantling the taliban government that was safeguarding it. since then, al-qaeda has been chased out of the country, OBL was found and killed, and the taliban were thrown out of power. what else is required to not be "losing the war"?

the goal posts of nation-building and stable democracy were set by the bush administration. obama is resetting those goal posts to reflect the actual objectives. those objectives have all been achieved.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

So according to you there is no war going on in Afghanistan. There was me thinking there is a war going on. Wonder what NATO army is doing in such a peaceful country. Thanks for letting me know. All those generals who recently have been saying that war is not winnable in Afghanistan obviously dont know what they are talking about.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

that entirely depends on the definition of victory. many americans including the military have an extremely lofty fantasy as the definition of victory and hold themselves to that standard.

i am asking you what your definition of victory is. more specifically, how is it different from the objectives i detailed previously (which are already mostly achieved)?

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

ok us won in afghanistan there is no more Al-qaeda to attack americans now they should relax airport securities and screening of foreign nationals arriving in us:D

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

not really... its Africa's turn now... they need to war machine going to support their economy.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

U mean North Africa, specially Libya ( oil) and Algeria (gas)

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

Krugman is supposed to be a Nobel Prize winning economist. He answers this and your point about Pakistan’s economy going down because of global downturn or Zardari government’s political and economic mismanagement .

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

that was sarcasm bhaijaan,i was challenging those who r saying us won in afghanistan

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

Thanks for the link

And that is what i believe as well

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

Theycame to liberate Afghanistan from Al Qaeda and Taliban. They might have removed Al Qaeda but Taliban is stronger than before, so if that is victory than yes they have had victory. According to US Al Qaeda is now moving into North Africa, so the question still remains that after 10 years of war what have they achieved. The answer is NOTHING, Taliban is still there and so is Al qaeda albeit in different form and in different country.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

if we look at the american propoganda during wa on terror,it was not only against al-qaeda it was also against taliban.
they tried to picturise taliban as brutal force terrorising afghan ppl but now they r calling them friends.....

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

In wars strategies change and new ones are adapted as the situation requires. Having said that, I would like to make it clear, that anyone who attacks the United States and its people will be considered “the enemy”. That will never change. Some of us keep forgetting that Al-Qaida had been attacking American interests all over the world long before 9/11 but when they attacked our homeland and killed over 3000 of our citizens and proudly claimed responsibility, we could not sit still. We asked the Taliban who were in power in Afghanistan to hand over Al-Qaida operatives who had made Afghanistan their terror headquarters. When they refused, we attacked them to go after the killers.

Our success in Afghanistan is reflected through the people of Afghanistan who are free to live normal lives. Would you not agree that today Afghans enjoy better quality of live then they did under Taliban? Are their children not free to pursue education that was denied to them under Taliban’s rule? Today Afghans are on the road to success. They hold their destiny in their own hands and this is our victory in Afghanistan. We will be further victorious when the region is totally free of terrorism and people can live their lives in peace and prosperity.

Re: Taliban no more terrorists?

An interesting fact I learnt last week is that the Taliban is not actually on the list of organizations that the US legally classifies as terrorist organisations.

Apparently several congressmen have been calling for Twitter to shut down the Twitter accounts used by the Taliban to publicise and celebrate their attacks on NATO forces in Afghanistan. Twitter has refused to do so and has stated that because the Taliban is not legally defined as a terrorist organization, there is no legal basis on which they can be forced to shut down the accounts by the government.
