I am willing to go out on a limb and say that almost all Taliban-Al Qaeda affiliated fighters and suicide bombers who are creating havoc in our border areas and in Islamabad are madrassa students or graduates of madrassas. The reason behind the rise of extremism in my opinion is the inability of successive governments in Pakistan to control and modernise the madrassa curriculum.”
Reading the interview of the girls and boys students of Lal Masjid, it is quite obvious that their utmost desire is/was to die and go to heaven. Is that just a sample of the entire Taliban movement of Afghanistan and now Pakistan? Are all Talibans bascially ex-madrassa students trained for the purpose of holy war and death( Jihad and martyrdom in their view)? A child is essentially a blank slate. If brainwashed, a child can be programmed to kill himself or even his own relatives. Child soldiers of African civil wars have been accused of horrible massacares because of the brainwashing they got (Anyone seen the movie Blood Diamond?).
If this is true, then the long term solution to end this war and stop the Taliban will be stop the supply of innocent childerns to their holy war by shutting these madarssas.
You shut the madrassas, and you will have a bloody riot on your hands. Figures that a writer from an elite newspaper comes to this solution. Why do they need to get educated anyway, right? Let them sit at home and rot in economic trouble, as long as I get to keep writing my columns.
Best solution is to modify the curriculum of these madrassas, have them all registered, and clean them of weapons. Raids need to be done in every one of them, and undercover agents need to be installed in each one.
The madrassa teachers need to be all government appointed, at this point, since the public has let the situtation get out of hand by basically ignoring what is going on in their own backyard.
Oh, yeah, and most importantly, muslims in Pakistan need to quit their complaining, and get involved as responsible citizens to make sure they know what is going on in their local masjid.
And while we're at it, can we stop charging extreme fees for education and try to make it available for everyone? I think some of these mohtarma principal's can do without their posh cars that they buy off the profit they make from these schools.
Oh right, but Pakistanis are probably the most elitist, snobby, materialistic race every created. None of what I recommended will EVER happen.
Slow and steady... One small step at a time is whats needed over a long period of time in controling the Madrassas...
Make sure they get registered, send in inteligence agents to identify dangerous ones, give financial support to those which espouse pacifist philospohpy so they can expand... Cut of support to any madrassa that espouses Jihad and encourages terrorist activity... Warn them first, then shut of their utilities...
Creating government sponsored madrassas with top of the line equipment to rival smaller local madrassas might also be effective. Parents only want to send thier kids to madrassas because they want to educate their kids, teach them their relgion, and provide them with what they themselves cant such as proper shelter and support. If govt can provide these facilities at a cost that is affordable and provide top of the line education, which not only included Islamic studies, but also Science, math, social sciences etc, offering genuine degrees in Islamia and mainstream subjects would be ideal... Im sure Parents will opt to send their kids to such an institute...
Trust is offcourse an issue, people dont necesarilly trust the govt... But there will be those who will send their children, even if they arent that many... Once they see the quality of the students which these institutes produce, then im sure even the most hardened critics of the govt will begin to see the benefits of sending their kids to a govt run modern madrassa. Its just a matter of making it affordable even if it means making it free for some students and providing education, which dare I say is considered world class.

the events at lal masjid showed you how many innocent ppl were there, teh roaches showed their real face again. They may have run away like lil whiney weiner dogs when the ****rol had started but then they show up again in their mob mentality and then when govt told them to back the hell off, they ran away like poofs again.

The ones that have been programmed may be beyond the point of redemption. However, it is critical to stop further brain washing to safeguard the future. These suicide bombers may have a tough time getting to US or UK, but anywhere in Pakistan they can easily strike (As we are seeing already).
