Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Warlord reports aid from Al Qaeda

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Sometime in mid-December, as the winter winds howled across the snow-dusted hills of Pakistan’s inhospitable border regions, 40 men representing Taliban groups all across Pakistan’s northwest frontier came together to unify under a single banner and to choose a leader.

The banner was Tehrik-e- Taliban Pakistan, or the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, with a fighting force estimated at up to 40,000. And the leader was Baitullah Mehsud, the man Pakistan accuses of assassinating former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The move is an attempt to present a united front against the Pakistani Army, which has been fighting insurgents along the border with Afghanistan. It is also the latest sign of the rise of Mehsud, considered the deadliest of the Taliban mullahs or clerics in northwest Pakistan.
Mehsud is based in the rugged, heavily treed mountains of South Waziristan, one of Pakistan’s so-called tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan, where Western intelligence says Al Qaeda is regrouping.
His organization has claimed responsibility, often backed up by videos, for killing and kidnapping hundreds of soldiers, beheading women, and burning schools that teach girls anything other than religion. He also says he has a steady supply of suicide bombers and strong ties to Al Qaeda.
“Al Qaeda has succeeded in building a base in the last two or three years mostly with help from Mehsud,” said Ahmed Zaidan, a reporter for Al-Jazeera Television in Qatar who interviewed Mehsud three weeks ago. “They are moving freely in the tribal areas where it is difficult for the Pakistan Army to move.”
During the interview, Mehsud said in halting Arabic that he had never met Osama bin Laden but knew Abu Musab al-Zarqawi well. Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born head of Al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a US air raid two years ago.
** Al Qaeda gives Mehsud money and logistical advice, according to one of his Taliban allies, Maulvi Muslim.
The Al Qaeda funds don’t always come in cash. Rather, Afghan and Pakistani businessmen, usually in the United Arab Emirates, are given money to buy high-priced goods like cars. The goods are shipped to Pakistan and sold, often tripling Al Qaeda’s investment. The businessmen, with sympathies to Al Qaeda, take a small cut while Al Qaeda spreads the wealth among its allies.**
The Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan share ideological goals but have separate structures, Muslim said. The spiritual head of both is Mullah Mohammed Omar, the leader of Afghanistan’s Taliban before being ousted by the US-led coalition in November 2001 and to whom Mehsud swore allegiance in 2001, according to Muslim.
Mehsud, thought to be in his 40s, is secretive and, like Mullah Omar, hates to be photographed. He is described as devoted to the Taliban and not well educated.
“They say he is free from all vices, walks around covering almost half his face all the time,” said Mehmood Shah, a retired Pakistani brigadier who was the government’s former point man for the tribal regions.
“He is very modest in his manners and polite.”
President Pervez Musharraf has accused Mehsud’s men of carrying out most of 19 suicide bombings in Pakistan over just three months. Newspapers quoted him as threatening Bhutto’s life, but he denied it, and as well as the government’s accusations that he was behind her Dec. 27 assassination.
Mehsud has been quoted as saying jihad is the only way to peace. His ascent reflects the failure of Pakistan’s army with its US funding to win control of its tribal areas.
When the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Mehsud was not prominent among the Pakistani militants who supported Afghanistan’s Taliban, according to Shah, the former army officer.
“Mehsud was a small fry, but I could see in time he could be of some problem,” Shah said. “The government policy of appeasement gave Mehsud a free hand to recruit and motivate,” said Shah, who described Mehsud as “very cool and calculating.”

Thought this might be appropriate.. from todays Telegraph

*Taliban seize Nato supplies in Pakistan *

By Isambard Wilkinson in Tank, Pakistan

The suspected mastermind behind Benazir Bhutto's assassination has stolen sophisticated Nato equipment by raiding the alliance's supply lines running through Pakistani territory.

Baitullah Mehsud, the Taliban commander who American officials hold responsible for Miss Bhutto's death, has emerged as a threat to the flow of supplies for British and American forces fighting in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Mehsud's increasing prominence shows how Pakistan under President Pervez Musharraf is steadily falling under the sway of Islamist militants.
Mr Musharraf, who is touring Europe, will speak in London today on "a vision for Pakistan and regional harmony". His critics believe, however, that turmoil in Pakistan is fuelling the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan and helping to destabilise South Asia as a whole.

A senior government official, based near the frontier town of Tank, told The Daily Telegraph that Mehsud's men regularly ambushed container lorries carrying hardware bound for Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Their latest target was a supply convoy outside the town of Dera Ismail Khan on the Indus Highway, one of Pakistan's main arteries.
"They managed to single out the most important lorries, removed the drivers and then vanished the consignment lock stock and barrel," said the official.

"Among the booty they discovered trucks carrying cargos of pristine 4x4 military vehicles, fitted with the most modern communications and listening technology," he added.
The official added that Mehsud's gunmen lacked the expertise to operate the equipment. So they enlisted the help of Uzbek and other foreign militants who are based in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas lining the north-west frontier.
Gen Athar Abbas, Pakistan's military spokesman, declined to comment on this incident. A Nato spokesman in Kabul did not rule out that material had been stolen in transit through Pakistan, but denied that any weapons or military equipment had been lost.
"This may hinge on what people's definition of 'equipment' is," he said. "I have been assured that no military equipment has been lost."
About 40 per cent of the supplies needed for Nato's 42,000 soldiers in Afghanistan pass through Pakistan. The vital supply routes follow the Indus valley from the port city of Karachi to the border town of Peshawar.
They enter Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass. Other border crossings from Pakistan's province of Baluchistan are also used.

****** Talibans.
Cursh them.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Finally! One report, which states that countries like UAE are very much to be blamed for al qaidas existance. We first need to freeze their accounts and then engage in any physical war. It's high time we wake up and keep those monarchs under pressure. But even If we do so, without the blessings of US of A nothing is going to happen!!

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

i pitty how pakis are thinking now :smack:

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

I am surprized ..that once we helped these people...in Ruusian invasion..at cost of extreme danger...but still..these namak haram..ehsan faramosh...heroin farosh ...doing all that....:(

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Oh! Talibans have factions as well. If they are fighting for the Khilafat (as some claim here), why these factions and which faction will rule this Khilafat.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Anyone suggesting a unity among tribal militia is shooting breeze. Afghanistaqn and Somalia are clear example that tribals do not have the mental capacity required to form complex groupings.

Hello! That's precisely why they are called "tribals".

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Oh how interesting, they united under a man name Mehsuud when they were defeating the Russians.

And what a bogus article.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

I think by "factions" they meant Taliban of Afghanistan (one faction) and the Pakistani franchise (other faction).

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

And how did Taliban manage to "unite" 100s of tribals in Afghanistan in 90s?

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Taliban didn't unite, they simply killed, maimed, and persecuted everyone around them. There was no difference between Taliban government and the society of Kuffar that existed before Islam.

They in the name of destroying Buddha, ended up bombing their own heritage. This is is what you get if you truly follow Saudi wahabi Islam.

Taliban instead of uniting with other Afghans like Hazaras, Uzbeks, and Tajiks, created anarchy and committed genocide of non-Pashtoon, non-Talib Afghanis.

Off course it is something very easy to understand. Just look at our own Talibs. Their efforts are directed against barbers these days. Thus the first step of Islam that is cleanliness has been attacked. Smuggling, poppy growing is the result of taliban created anarchy.

And then people say that Taliban can unite. Sure they are Kuffar united against peaceful people of Pakistan. They are kuffar who are committed horrific acts of suicide bombing. They are kuffar who are cutting down our future mothers by bombing their schools.

So there you have it, Taliban "united" just like 90s, just like Kuffars.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

One of my co worker was telling me how much peopel of his area have become sick of Taliban, but they feel helpless and they are spreading all around tribal areas.

Its time for big strike.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Are you serious or are you in joking mood? Taliban took over more than 90% of Afghanistan, they didn't kill population of all those areas. Warlords joined Taliban (of course they saw them winning and hence joined the bandwagon to stay in power in their local areas), as soon as they saw US forces coming in, they sold their loyalties to next-in-line power i.e. Nato.

Smuggling and poppy growing were long known attributes of Afghanistan.

Ehsan, Pakistani should unite... But this is one of the reasons why I am such a vocal opponent of the Mush regime...
By attacking the constitution and the Jusdiciary and media, he has polarized the country at the time when he shoudl have been trying to Unite it...

I hate to be Cynical, but unity is easier said then done under these conditions...

Thats being said, I think that now that Mush is JUST the so called President and there is an actual professional general heading the Army, Pak has a good chance of defeating these terrorists in the long run...
But it will be a long time before the country is truly United.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

The Tribes of Arabia united under the Prophet and took of half the known world... Most of their conquests came after the Prophet had passed away..

And at one time, all of Humanity was comprised of Tribes... The Aryans, the dravidians, the Hebrews, you name it... But all eventually became societies...

Just look at Punjab, its comprised of dozens of Tribes and subtribes... But wha signifigance do tribes have today in the provincde today? Being an Awan, I could care less about it. Tribes have no real relevance in Punjab because these tribes became United at one point or another...

So tribals can be united if they are given the oppurtunity and the motiviation...
Presently, these tribals lack leadership... Thats why they are not united.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

easier said than done
at present you have a mob, people who are confused, angry and feeling left out.
In situations like these you need a L E A D E R , who can channel that anger and convert all this collective strength into something productive, i.e. driving the taliban out of pakistan and restoring peace in the country.

Unfortunately, because of the lack of any sincere leadership not much can be done. If pakistan fails to choose (or produce) a sincere leader very soon, we are looking at some really dark days ahead.

Re: Taliban factions unite to battle Pakistan

Now you want to ignore the tribal behavior in early Islam then its OK.

But remember few things!

  1. Three of our four "Rashid Khalifas" were murdered in petty and ucouth tribal rivalries (Umar rah, Usman rah, and Ali rah).

  2. Immediately after the period of Rashid Khalifas, tribal backstabbing continued with murder of our Messenger Pbuh' grandson, little kids, women, and elderly.

  3. The rest of Arab history is filled with similar horrendous acts of murder, rape, and pillage where one tribe or another fought and killed in the name of Islam.

At one time humanity also lived on trees and ate bananas. Planning to start the same life style now?
