Talha's Top 50 All-Time Films

*19. Muriel's Wedding (1994) *

[thumb=H]murielswedding_dvd_large18751_4250105.JPG[/thumb]

Director: P.J. Hogan
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Cast: Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths, Bill Hunter
Box Office: $57 million worldwide
Random fact: The TV version replaces the word "c--ksucker" with comparitively less vulgar "eggsucker".
*Cool quotes:- *

*Muriel Heslop: When I lived in Porpoise Spit no one looked at me. But when I moved to Sydney Brice asked me out and that proves that I changed and I'm not her anymore.
Rhonda: Her?
Muriel Heslop: Muriel! Muriel Heslop! Stupid, fat and useless! I'm never going back to being her again! Why can't it be me? Why can't I be the one?

Rhonda: I tell the truth, too. Nicole's having an affair with Chook. Muriel saw them screwing in the laundry on your wedding day. Stick your drink up your arse, Tanya; I'd rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. *

i only saw this film, reluctantly, 3 years ago. The thought of a "loser who listens to Abba songs on a pink radio" (not to mention having "wedding" in the title) didn't appeal to me. But this movie is excellent. Muriel Heslop is suuuuuuch a loser that you feel sorry for the poor gal everytime a family member of friend treats her like dirt!

Toni Collette is such an amazing actress, and this was her first big film role and she's just brilliant in this movie. See it!

18. As Good as It Gets (1997)

[thumb=H]good18751_4250105.JPG[/thumb]

Director: James L. Brooks

Genre:Comedy, Drama and Romance
Cast: Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear, Cuba Gooding Jr., Shirley Knight

Box Office: Over $67 mil in rentals (USA)
Random fact: The role of Melvin Udall and Carol Connelly was initially offered to John Travolta and Holly Hunter.
Cool quotes:-

*Carol: Have you ever let a romantic moment make you do something that you knew was stupid?

Melvin Udall: I've got a really great compliment for you, and its true.
Carol Connelly: I'm so afraid you're about to say something awful.
Melvin Udall: Don't be pessimistic, it's not your style. Anyway, here goes: I've got this, what, ailment. Now, my doctor, this shrink I used to go to all the time, says that in fifty to sixty percent of cases, a pill really helps. I HATE pills, hate them. I'm using the word "hate" about pills. Anyway, my compliment to you is the night after you came over and said that you would never... well, you were there, you know what you said. Anyway, the very next morning, I started taking the pills.
Carol Connelly: I don't quite get how that's a compliment for me.
Melvin Udall: You make me want to be a better man.

[after telling Carol that he thinks she's the greatest woman on Earth]

Melvin Udall: Is that something that's bad for you to be around, for you?
Carol Connelly: No.

[after Carol arrives at Melvin's apartment in the middle of the night]
Carol Connelly: I'm not going to sleep with you! I will never sleep with you, never, ever! Not ever!
Melvin Udall: I'm sorry, but we don't open for the "no sex-odes" until 9am. *

Original one liners, great story line. I always pull this movie out and rewatch it - there are few words in my mind that can actually describe this movie - simply put an amazing movie - the acting hits a degree of excellence that really hasn't been matched in modern movies today - Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors, and he's no exception to excellence here - so is Helen Hunt who gives such a good performance - both leading actors deserved the Oscars for their effort - It's a sweet movie that earns its sentimentality. I am constantly engaged when I watch this film- James L. Brooks does a good job of making us care for these characters, hoping that they'll improve their lives. Terrific - how a single mother/waitress, a misanthropic author, and a gay artist bound into a friendship tells you alot about best screenplays ever in the history of Hollywood.

This is probably the only modern movie to hit this degree.

17. American Beauty (1999)

[thumb=H]beauty18751_2727597.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Sam Mendes

Genre: Comedy and Drama
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, Mena Suvari

Box Office: $211,000,000 (Worldwide)
Random fact: The high school campus scenes, including the Spartanette dance sequence in the gymnasium, were shot at South High School in Torrance, California.

Cool quotes:-

*
[at the dinner table]

Carolyn Burnham: Your father and I were just discussing his day at work. Why don't you tell our daughter about it, honey?
Lester Burnham: Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go **** himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.
Carolyn Burnham: Your father seems to think this type of behavior is something to be proud of.
Lester Burnham: And your mother seems to prefer I go through life like a ****ing prisoner while she keeps my dick in a mason jar under the sink.
Carolyn Burnham: How dare you speak to me that way in front of her. And I marvel that you can be so contemptuous of me, on the same day that you LOSE your job.
Lester Burnham: Lose it? I didn't lose it. It's not like, "Whoops! Where'd my job go?" I QUIT. Someone pass me the asparagus.

Carolyn Burnham: What are you doing?
Lester Burnham: Nothing.
Carolyn Burnham: You were masturbating!
Lester Burnham: I was not.
Carolyn Burnham: Yes you were!
Lester Burnham: Oh, all right! So shoot me, I was whacking off! That's right, I was choking the bishop, chafing the carrot, you know, saying "hi" to my monster!

Ricky Fitts: It's like God's looking right at you, just for a second, and if you're careful you can look right back.
Jane Burnham: And what do you see?
Ricky Fitts: Beauty.

Brad Dupree: Man, you are one twisted F.
Lester Burnham: Nope, I'm just an ordinary guy with nothing to lose.*

American Beauty has some excellent cinematography, hauntingly touching score, and brilliant performances by Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, and Chris Cooper. It also lacks an original storyline. I saw this movie in 1999 and loved it.

a middle-aged married man(Kevin Spacey) who is miserable because his wife (Bening) is a phony bitch, and his daughter (Annoyingly cold Thora Birch) hates him for no reason other then plot devices - that's another peeve of the film. What did Lester do to make his daughter neglect him? If anything, she should hate her mother (which I think she does too), but Lester is cool to her. Anyways, he's suddenly sparked back to life when he meets her best friend (the seductive Mena Suvari) and instantly feels he can accomplish anything - Wes Bentley is the weird next-door neighbor who falls in love with Birch and whose father (Cooper) is a homophobic ex-marine and mother (Allison Janney) is a messed up disaster.

A film like this not only entertains while you're in the theatre but also drops subtle questions in your head about the nature of human behavior and the gulf between fantasy and reality

16. Philadelphia (1993)

[thumb=H]phila18751_6289079.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Jonathan Demme
Genre: Drama
Cast: Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington
Box Office: $37,500,000 mil in rentals (USA)
Random fact: The scene during the trial when Tom Hanks's character lifts up his shirt to show the lesions, the chest shot is of a person who was really suffering from aids.

Cool quotes:-

*Joe Miller: Some of these people make me sick. But a law's been broken here. You do remember the law, don't you?

[Joe Miller is in court and has just asked his witness whether he is a homosexual]
Joe Miller: Are you a homo? Are you a queer? Are you a faggot? Are you a fruit? Are you gay, sir?

Joe Miller: We're standing here in Philadelphia, the, uh, city of brotherly love, the birthplace of freedom, where the, uh, founding fathers authored the Declaration of Independence, and I don't recall that glorious document saying anything about all straight men are created equal. I believe it says all men are created equal.

Joe Miller: What do you love about the law, Andrew?
Andrew Beckett: I... many things... uh... uh... What I love the most about the law?
Joe Miller: Yeah.
Andrew Beckett: It's that every now and again - not often, but occasionally - you get to be a part of justice being done. That really is quite a thrill when that happens. *

Philadelphia is a very sad movie, that depects how we fear, and hate gays. Tom Hanks gets a triple thumbs up for his oscar winning preformance as a gay man trying to fight for justice, in 1993 Philadelphia, a city that doesn't take kindly to homosexuals. Tom Hanks won the Oscar for his memorable role

Overall the movie is really a film about how we treat each other - and how we deal with certant issues in the world - and as specially at a time in country were we need to come together more than ever, Philadelphia is a powerful movie that reminds us of others emotions, instead of just ourselves - A very powerful movie one that everyone should see.

Talha,

i have trouble reading Urdu in roman format. :silly:

15. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

[thumb=H]twotowers18751_3020985.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Peter Jackson
Genre: Fantasy/Adventure
Cast: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Miranda Otto, Dominic Monaghan
Box Office: $900 million worldwide!
Random fact: Peter Jackson's children appear as "cute Rohan refugee children".
*Cool quotes:- *

*Frodo: I am Frodo Baggins, and this is Samwise Gamgee.
Faramir: Your bodyguard?
Sam: His gardener.

Gollum: [singing] The rock and pool, is nice and cool, so nice for feet! I only wish,
[he whacks the fish on the rock]
Gollum: to catch a fish,
[another whack]
Gollum: so juicy sweet! *

While the first Lord of the Rings film was an epic masterpiece, the second installment of the popular J.R.R. Tolkein series is far superior - more action, more drama, better dialogue, amazing special effects and brilliant direction and acting.

14. White Men Can't Jump (1992)

[thumb=H]whitemen18751_3020985.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Ron Shelton
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes, Rosie Perez, Tyra Ferrell, Cylk Cozart

Box Office: $ 34,115,000 in the rentals (USA)
Random fact: According to their basketball instructors, Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson reached the skill level to be able to start for an NCAA Division III team.
Cool quotes:-

*Sidney Deane: Billy, I have four words for you: "Listen to the Woman".
Billy Hoyle: What the hell does that mean, "Listen to the woman"? I TRIED to listen to the woman and you're the one who talked me out of it.
Sidney Deane: Wait a minute. I didn't talk you out of anything. I presented you with an option and you took it.

Rhonda Deane: All I care about is getting out of the Vista View apartments, because there ain't no 'vista', there ain't no "view", and there certainly ain't no vista of no view.

Sidney Deane: Oh man shut your anorexic malnutrition tapeworm-having overdose on Dick Gregory Bohemian diet-drinking ass up. Leave me alone! *

this is the best Basketball movie ever - Snipes and Woody are two basketball players and unlikely partners...running tough games all over the courts of Los Angeles - their constant bickering through the film is hilarious as they dispute about black and white, Jimmy Hendrix and if Billy can stuff the ball or not...thoroughly an entertaining movie!

13. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

[thumb=H]mind18751_3372289.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Ron Howard

Genre: Drama
Cast: Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Adam Goldberg, Paul Bettany

Box Office: Over $170, 000, 000 mil in the U.S.
Random fact: The Pentagon office scene was filmed in the basement of Keating Hall on Fordham University's Bronx campus (the same room was used in the filming of the Georgetown University language lab scene in The Exorcist (1973)).
Cool quotes:-

*Hansen: You scared?

Nash: [sarcastically] Terrified. Mortified. Petrified. Stupefied... by you.

Nash: There has to be a mathematical explanation for how bad that tie is.

Alicia: How big is the universe?
Nash: Infinite.
Alicia: How do you know?
Nash: I know because all the data indicates it's infinite.
Alicia: But it hasn't been proven yet.
Nash: No.
Alicia: You haven't seen it.
Nash: No.
Alicia: How do you know for sure?
Nash: I don't, I just believe it.
Alicia: It's the same with love I guess.

MIT Student: Can we open up the window, Professor? It's hot in here.
John Nash: Your comfort comes second to my ability to hear my own voice. *

Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe both were nominated for Academy awards which Jennifer won as a supporting star...i thought Russell's work was better than his Oscar-winning performance in the Gladiator.

the true story is based on the life of Professor John Forbes Nash Jr. from his days at Princeton as a student up until he is old and receiving the Nobel Price for his math theories -- the man is a schizophrenic but neither he, his wife, or classmates know it yet. all along his imaginary people in his life one of which Ed Harris tells him he is on a mission working for the government cracking Russian codes - all around it is a wonderful portrait of the human ability to overcome a staggering illness!

Re: Talha's Top 50 All-Time Films

wtfff..two towers at no. 15?? the LOTR trilogy should be get the top 3 spots.

12. Batman (1989)

[thumb=H]batman18751_50641231.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Tim Burton
Genre: Action/Adventure and Science Fiction/Fantasy
Cast: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Jack Palance, Jerry Hall

Box Office: $150,500,000 mil in the rentals (USA)
Random fact: Set designer Anton Furst deliberately mixed clashing architectural styles to make Gotham City the ugliest and bleakest metropolis imaginable.

Cool quotes:-

*The Joker: Haven't you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?

The Joker: I've been dead once already; it's very liberating. You might think of it as... therapy

The Joker: Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with the devil by the pale moonlight?

The Joker: Never rub another man's rhubarb.

The Joker: And now, folks, it's time for "Who do you trust!" Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I'm giving away free money. And where is the Batman? HE'S AT HOME WASHING HIS TIGHTS! *

why people call Jack Nicholson a "Genius" is because of his performance as a Joker in Batman -- he really brings this movie to life - i remember seeing this movie from since i was five years old and it just keeps getting better - Nicholson sure is convincing as a raving lunatic in this comic book thriller, with a memorable directing job by A-List director Tim Burton.

Kim Basinger does a very good job as Vicky Vale, who is a photo journalist - i did however, find her to get a little annoying at times when she kept screaming through all the action scenes -- Other than that, this is a movie for all Batman fans to take a peep at -- i promise you that you won't be disappointed. HOLLA!

*11. Scent of a Woman (1992) *

[thumb=H]scent18751_7194019.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Martin Brest

Genre: Drama
Cast: Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnell

Box Office: Over $28,500,000 in the rentals (USA)
Random fact: Al Pacino was helped by a school for the blind in his preparation for this role. He said that he made himself appear blind by not allowing his eyes to focus on anything.
Cool quotes:-

*[Inhales deeply through nose]

Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Women! What can you say? Who made 'em? God must have been a ****in' genius. The hair... They say the hair is everything, you know. Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls... just wanted to go to sleep forever? Or lips... and when they touched, yours were like... that first swallow of wine... after you just crossed the desert. Tits. Hoo-hah! Big ones, little ones, nipples staring right out at ya, like secret searchlights. Mmm. Legs. I don't care if they're Greek columns... or secondhand Steinways. What's between 'em... passport to heaven. I need a drink. Yes, Mr Sims, there's only two syllables in this whole wide world worth hearing: pussy. Hah! Are you listenin' to me, son? I'm givin' ya pearls here.

Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Tickets. Money. Speech. Old Washington joke... from my days with Lyndon (reference to former U.S. President, LBJ)

Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Out of order, I show you out of order. You don't know what out of order is, Mr. Trask. I'd show you, but I'm too old, I'm too tired, I'm too *in' blind. If I were the man I was five years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place! Out of order? Who the hell do you think you're talkin' to? I've been around, you know? There was a time I could see. And I have seen. Boys like these, younger than these, their arms torn out, their legs ripped off. But there isn't nothin' like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is no prosthetic for that. You think you're merely sending this splendid foot soldier back home to Oregon with his tail between his legs, but I say you are... executin' his soul! And why? Because he's not a Bairdman. Bairdmen. You hurt this boy, you're gonna be Baird bums, the lot of ya. And Harry, Jimmy, Trent, wherever you are out there, * YOU TOO! *

Al Pacino is just brillant in this movie - it makes you think about life and all the tragedies that come with it. Al is outstanding in his Oscar-winning role - A pure and beautiful work of art with AWESOME sketched human drama showing the not-so-violent side of Al Pacino - This movie contains all the essentials that makes a movie great; laughter, drama, suspense, passion, sensuality and honor!

Al Pacino is definitely be esteemed as one of the classics in acting history, with his many academy winning roles and vast ability to portray different characters so deeply believably well..

Re: Talha’s Top 50 All-Time Films

OUCH .. ok this isn’t fair at all .. LOTR should be in your top 3 .. :bummer: ..

10. Boys Don't Cry (1999)

[thumb=H]cry18751_5514306.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Kimberly Peirce
Genre: Drama
Cast: Hilary Swank, Chloë Sevigny, Peter Sarsgaard, Brendan Sexton III, Alison Folland

Box Office: More than $2,000,000 in the U.S.

Random fact: To prepare for her role, Hilary Swank lived life as a man for at least a month, including wrapping her chest in tension bandages and putting socks down the front of her pants much the same way that Brandon Teena did. This is true story based on the life of Teena Brandon, a cross-dresser in Nebraska.
Cool quotes:-

*Lana: You don't have to be sober to be able to weigh spinach.

Brandon: Lana,You are one cranky girl
Lana: "Well, you'd be cranky too, Mister I'm going to Graceland, Memphis Tennessee*

This is a very tragic and dark docu-drama about Brandon Teena's rape and murder at the hands of a pair of ignorant and hateful men - it is also an amazing love story about two people who find love and belonging - i thought Swank was very believable in the role and that the film was an appropriate tribute to Brandon Teena, who was persecuted and killed for being different - Hillary Swank won the Oscar for her brilliance in the role. At that time, the role was offered to her for $ 75,000

the end was chilling - i couldn't bear to watch the end of the film first time around - unless you have a strong threshold for emotional scarring..tho heart-wrenching movie, but rewarding to watch.

9. Casino (1995)

[thumb=H]casino18751_7823220.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Martin Scorsese

Genre: Drama and Crime/Gangster

Cast: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, James Woods, Don Rickles

Box Office: $20,287,700 in the rentals (USA)
Random fact: The word "F" is said 422 times, including in the narration - 2.4 times per minute on average.
Cool quotes:-

*Ace Rothstein: [narrating] In Vegas, everybody's gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I'm watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.

Nicky Santoro: A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all ****in' night.

Nicky Santoro: Peek-a-boo, you ****s, you!

*

Martin Scorsese rolls out another hit in this very compelling (and true) story of the ever present tie between the mob and the gaudy excess of Sin City - Joe Pesci and Robert de Niro should play together in every movie hahaha - Robert de Niro runs a big casino in Las Vegas, Joe Pesci is his hit man and Sharon Stone is playing with his mind and his money (a fortune). Realistic movie about corruption and crime, and about how money messes up human minds.

Scorsese directs this true story the way he did Goodfellas. Lots of cursing, lots of violence, and a surprising ammount of panache - what stands out is the ending of the movie that makes you think, damn the mob was really that ruthless.

Re: Talha's Top 50 All-Time Films

casino was a nice movie, and so was scent of a woman,

dude where is shawshank redemption ?
i think god father 2 deserves no 1 spot :D

Re: Talha's Top 50 All-Time Films

wth, two towers at 15? Are you just trying to make a statement here? Or trying to "stand out"?

Fatalist: I am sure Talha is wise enough to give Shawshank redemption the position it deserves, amongst top 3.

it’s my choice of movies - i consider other movies better than LOTR…there might be other movies that you and others consider among your top movies but you won’t be seeing it in my list…

hell i bet anyone here have ever heard of “Muriel’s Wedding” before clicking onto this thread…

8. City of Angels (1998)

[thumb=H]angels18751_7159624.JPG[/thumb]

Director: Brad Silberling
Genre: Romance
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan, Dennis Franz, Andre Braugher, Colm Feore

Box Office: Over $ 36 mil in the rentals (USA)
Random fact: When Meg Ryan is looking in the mirror and Cage is not reflected, this was shot twice with motion control: once with Ryan and Cage, once without the actors, and mixed together. also, if you look closely enough, you can see a few strands of Ryan's hair morphing in and out where Cage's face was erased.

Cool quotes:-

*Seth: Hello Maggie! It's nice to see you again.
Maggie Rice: It's weird to see you again.

Seth: Weird is nice.

Ann: Never date a guy who knows more about your vagina than you do.

Maggie: Something happened in that room. I got this jolt that... something bigger is out there. Something bigger than me, bigger than you. Does that sound crazy?

Seth: I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One. *

City of Angels was a very memorable, beautiful story - i loved it from beginning to end, well...I'd have preferred a DIFFERENT ending, and of course, if you've watched it already, you'd understand what I meant.. it starts slow but eventually picks up and really turns out to be an affecting romantic film -- on the spiritual level it fails until the final scenes of the film, where spirituality is all that remains in the film - In the romance, it works to a good level. Cage and Ryan posess enough chemistry to make the romance between them believable and both actors give impressive performances - this was a totally magical ride and A movie to see for everyone.

the soundtrack from Goo Goo Doll stands out....

Re: Talha’s Top 50 All-Time Films

hummm i think kill bill will be in your top 5 .. :blush: ..
