Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

I thought for a change, it would be good to post this article to actually know the opinion of Syrian people rather than Saleem, Anwar and Mehmood.
Easy for us to pass judgments about the future of a nation…how would it change if you were out living in such a camp in hope to return ASAP to your home.

Across the camp, five miles inside Jordan, Syrian refugees gathered in small groups to listen to Barack Obama. Some watched on al-Jazeera TV, others tuned in to the radio, many followed on Twitter or online news sites. Expectations were high.

“We thought, when he began to speak, the strikes on Bashar al-Assad’s regime were going to start immediately,” said one refugee, Abu Assam. “Then he said ‘but’.” In Arabic “but” is “wa lakin”, but in both languages the implication is the same. “It was when he said that word that everything came crashing down.” He added: “Obama lied to us.”

A member of the Free Syrian Army, who walks on crutches after an accident inside Zataari, Abu Assam said he immediately decided to cross the border back to Syria to rejoin the fighters on the other side, despite his injury. “I can fire a weapon on a pick-up truck,” he said.

The Zaatari refugee camp is home to about 120,000 Syrians who have fled the war next door, the sound of which, on still nights, can be heard from across the border. The mood on Sunday was uniformly bleak. The news of the chemical attack in Damascus was devastating for those in the camp, said a UN official. Residents asked for no visits from journalists or dignitaries for three days. After that period of grief, amid all the tough talk by western leaders, refugees believed that something would be done to punish the Syrian regime.

Abu Atum, who left his village near Dara’a after seeing his son and nephew shot dead in front of him, said he had listened to the speech on the radio in his shelter.

“Afterwards I called my family who are still in Dara’a. They had listened to it too. They were so happy when he started speaking. Afterwards they were so disappointed.”

Abu Atum said he would never forget his son’s final moments. “He was bleeding; he told me he didn’t want to die.”

He believes America has deserted Syrians. “We know what this means,” he said. “It means nothing is going to happen. Not in a day, not in a week, not in a month. He said it didn’t matter if it was a week or a month. But it will never happen.”

Another resident, Mohamed Mahdi, said: “We know only 25% of Americans back the strike. We know that in Europe people are also split. But this is the third year of the war for us. America and the Europeans are not standing with the Syrian people. It feels as if nobody cares about what is happening to us.”

Most of the men in this area of the camp arrived in the last five months with their families, fleeing killings by the regime and by the Shabiha militia.

Of all of them, Mahdi is the most optimistic. He thinks that Russia might change its mind and push for the removal of Assad. Abu Assam laughs bitterly and calls him “crazy for dreaming”.

The men say they follow the news, the analysts on television and social media. They have watched the world’s reaction and believe it has let them down, and not for the first time.

There are families here from Ghouta in east Damascus too, the site of the devastating chemical attacks that claimed hundreds of lives and led Obama to the brink of ordering cruise missile strikes in relation.

In another hut, crowded with men, is Abu Mohamed al-Taibi, 38. His brother and his wife, he says, were exposed to gas in a previous attack near Ghouta in March. Another brother was hit in the leg by a fragment of an anti-aircraft cannon round. He shows a picture on his phone.

“We know that many people are sympathetic to what is happening to us. It is the politicians and the British opposition, like Obama, who don’t seem to care. We will never forgive them for what they are doing.”

Abu Reban, 56, is the last to speak, an older man with a heavily lined face. He tells the story of how he escaped during an attack on his neighbourhood. He managed to flee with some of his family. Then he bursts into tears.

“I have other children. I lost them then as we fled. I don’t know what has happened to them. I’ve had no news. No one does a thing. How can a person be like this? How could I have escaped and not know where my children are? How could this happen to us?”

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

I don't get why the world's populace thoo thoo's us but then expects us to come in and fight their wars. Fight your own wars.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

They do thoo thoo for the wrong policies like invading Iraq and spying on its own people.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

Thoo thoo US because they fight ... invite US because they fight

"Fight your own wars" ... This is not a US policy ... Do you think Arab League will be given go ahead to enter Syria ... by UN if US pull out?

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

Arabs do not need a go ahead. Those jerks have been having inter-tribal conflicts since the time of the Prophet. In fact, this element of tribalism across Arab and Persian states is what te Prophet was against. These Arabs need no go ahead if they want to fight then go fight each other. Why drag in the lives of American soldiers? Whats happened there is no threat to our national security. American domestic needs are suffering at the cost of these useless international wars mainly staged to gain control of oil and land.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

Err I don't think any US soldiers lives will be dragged in aerial bombing. Besides, US won't get involved without personal interest so chill.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

US is on self destruct mode.

On a serious note one should also bear in mind the seven stages to destroy america startegy as given by abu musab as suri of alqeda. They wanted to get US involved in every war to make it weaker and then destroy it.

Only point which alqaeda and israel have common. :) US should stay away from these wars for its own saftey.magar kia karain US ka maun ko khoon lag gaya hay.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

Sorry but I don't see the comparison between Syrian refugees and Taliban. If anything, I'd compare them to Bosnians. US did help the Bosnians...though it was a bit late and it didn't become weaker as a result.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

As an American citizen/taxpayer I do not want us in this war of choice. This is an Arab problem & let the Arabs fight it out. Its not worth one death of our solider or 1 dollar being spend on this war.

Btw, this a conflict between Iran & Saudi Arabia (Shia/Sunni conflict). Look at Bharain majority Shia country run by Sunni monarchy backed by Saudi Arabia. Saudis sent in their own troops last year to crush popular uprising against the regime. Syria is the same thing...Sunni majority country run by Alawites elite offshoot of Shia Islam. So, let Iran/Saudi duel it out. The US has no business being there & Obama should not make the same mistake that Bush made...I hope.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

^Oh yes you will...to save your little pet from Iran.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

How do we know this won't turn into wrong policy later on? The US has done enough interfering in other countries like iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and with drone attacks -in Pakistan as well. Muslim countries, especially those with power and money like Saudi Arabia, should help fellow Arab and Muslim nations. Why expect the West to put their resources for other countries in terms of aid, attacks etc at the same time denounce them as being evil West, blame them for every ill and then burn US and UK flags. Most of the population in UK and US are against invasion into other countries as they were with Iraq. Now the US government will be cautious.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

True but even aerial bombing costs money and that money of US taxpayers could be better spent on health and all the other national problems in the US. i hope Obama will act differently to Bush. I mean he was meant to represent change wasn't he?

Re: Syrian Refugees: “Obama lied to us”

I’m sure US have a better reason than ‘save the Arabs’. May be US don’t want Russia and China taking control of the resources.

Re: Syrian Refugees: “Obama lied to us”

It probably has something to do with oil. I guess they don’t call oil liquid gold for no reason. Muslim persecution in other countries is ignored by all including the West and Arab nations. Nothing was done for the Rohingya people of Burma or the Muslims in China. I don’t think each time has been for oil though. If the US government has sense they will realise it’s not worth it even with the oil. they have enough wars to deal with. Should not the Arabs help the other nations? I guess they would if the Muslim ummah meant anything to them but since racism against non-Arabs, who are even Muslims, is widespread I guess not. A Pakistani Muslim living 30 years in Saudi Arabia cannot get citizenship, getting citizenship in UAE is difficult and in shopping centres in Qatar are discriminated against. The Syrian refugees should also place faith in the Saudi Arabians to help them with strikes rather than just Americans. If the US government doesnt want to become even more hated then it is worldwide it will not interfere. Even most right wing people in the US are against this attack.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

Talk big talk, people expect big results. People are naive, of course. Or desperate. But certainly not knowledgeable of how America operates. Out of curiosity, who else was expecting America to come and fight their wars?

It's sufficient to simply not support any single side....in the end, it will work out best for all.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

I think they (American capitalists) know very well what they're doing. They probably know if they didnt take control someone else would.

whatever plans they have....I hope they turn out good for Syrian people suffering on Assad's hands.

Re: Syrian Refugees: “Obama lied to us”

The US government always want to interfere you think Assad is not an American ally for many years ?

the US interferes causes mischief in order to remain in middle east forever always claim our interests everytime!

^Kerry having nice dinner with the Assads

I would prefer the muslims to Unite and solve their own problems i don’t trust the US government when it comes to muslim affairs.

Re: Syrian Refugees: “Obama lied to us”

Yeah that would’ve been the ideal situation.

Re: Syrian Refugees: “Obama lied to us”

It would be nice if Muslims united but I don’t think Saudi Arabia are planning to intervene. Or how about Saudi Arabia and other Arabian countries treat Asian Muslims as equal to them and offer them fair chance of citizenship, ability to own property etc. However, i doubt any Arab Muslim country offers that to Asian Muslims. All those things you get access to in the non-muslim West because you have a chance to be treated as equal citizens but not in Arabic countries. In Saudi Arabia I don’t think you can get citizenship even if you have a Saudi mother but a non Saudi father or you aren’t of a particular job status. I am sure many heads of gulf states also cozied up to Assad in the past. US isn’t the only one who has been friends with future dictators only to not have it worj out. Unless you are a Saudi/Arab you can’t positively say the word “our” would be seen the same way by native Arabs. I hope one day a future Muslim ummah treats all its citizens equally. Maybe granting something basic like citizenship and laws protecting against racism could be a start.A time where ethnicity is not seen as the most important thing

In the West, even people who hate the West and denounce it as evil like Anjem Choudary also get citizenship. I can’t imagine that happening in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country if you protested against the government.

Re: Syrian Refugees: "Obama lied to us"

As a Muslim, gaining property or material shouldn't be our concern.

Saudi is supporting its own groups in Syria which aren't even Syrians....so they can impose shariah.

Besides, Saudi, Qatar and Gulf don't even have armies....they pay Americans to protect their lands.
