swimming pool in backyard

Is it worth having one? I’ve heard the maintenance costs a lot of money. Anyone with any experience regarding this?

Re: swimming pool in backyard

No experience but that would be just SO AWESOME. Esp if u can somehow make it private so that no one can see you.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Here in Texas, it's very, very common! As a Realtor, if a client wants a pool, I usually steer them towards a home that already has one, vs putting one in themselves. It can run anywhere from $25,000-$40,000 to put a pool in, depending on his fancy shmancy you go.

As far as monthly maintainace, you can expect it to cost about $100-$150 more a month for electricity/cleaning etc(a little more if you are going to use a pool service company and not maintain it yourself).

Im definitely looking for our next house to have a pool :D

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Yes Khatti, it will add a lot of value to the property. I really want one for my boys...we have a big yard but at the moment it's covered with budlia and nettles. The maintenance money is anither expense but then you have to pay almost the same amount for family swimming lessons.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Would it be an indoor pool?

swimming pool in backyard

I would LOVE to have a pool! In England it would have to be indoor with the poor weather we have!

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Indoor pool would probably cost double the amount of money.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

But an out outdoor pool would probably be useless 95% of the time in England.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

hmm yeah...65% may be.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

I still think its worse than that. Anyway, if its for health and fitness purposes than swimming pool should be for all seasons and in England thats a pretty tough target to achieve considering its not unusual to get ridiculously cold and rainy spring/summer (the other two seasons are totally out of question here) here with bunch of sunny days here and there, so for that amount of money, is it really worth it? I for a fact would never ever consider getting an outdoor pool anywhere on British Isles. But thats just my opinion, you obviously know best...

Oh another point, backyard pool often becomes "ghar ki mugi daal brabar"...I have friends and family who have outdoor swimming pools in Pakistan and California but they can't bothered one bit to use it for health and fitness purposes...they're best used for pulling silly pranks

Re: swimming pool in backyard

It will add value to the property whether we use it or not. And an easy solution to budlia...managing a big grassy (mainly weeds) lawn is out of question for both me and hubby, getting it paved would be just stupid and would in fact reduce the property's value.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

grow some fruits and vegies...

Get your garden fixed by professional gardening team or something that's more useful than building swimming but if the sole aim is only to increase the property value than I guess if this what you want and this is what you want...

Re: swimming pool in backyard

We did hire people but they charged us so much and couldn't even do the job properly. They left all the roots and so after a month it's the same as before. My husband will hire a mini digger in holidays to take out the budlia and weeds from root. After the shed, car porch and veggie patch we'll still be left with quite a lot of land.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Here are the statistics you should consider:

Florida has the highest drowning death rate in the nation for children under age 5.1 Over 60% of these drowning deaths occur in residential swimming pools every year.2 Lapses in adult supervision and lack of pool safety features as mandated in the Preston de Ibern/McKenzie Merriam Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Florida Statutes, Chapter 515) have been identified as contributing to these needless and preventable tragedies. In 2005, there were 50 reported drowning deaths of children under age 5 in residential swimming pools in Florida.

If both parents are good swimmers then you may want to have a pool.

problem is the pool cannot be attended all the time, so if you want a pool in the back yard then invest in a cover that can be pulled over the water while pool is not in use!

Good Luck!

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Real estate is very local but I live in CA and unless you have a huge backyard having a pools actually reduces property value here. People like to have a pool only if they have enough room for a decent size grassy area and paved patio to spare.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Hareem, I know two families here in the North that tried to have their private pools .. unfortunately didnt work for both of them ... firstly the maintenance was one heck of a task ... it sounds easy but in reality is tough , mainly due to the constant mausam changes here .. for this particular family it became more of a hygiene issue as maintaining the pool was not only expensive but also time consuming ..

The second family gave it up due to the safety issues .. specially when they had guests over and kids were on their own twice they encountered serious security issues .. hence they decided not to risk it any further ..

So yeah, do your research carefully before investing into this ...

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Are you looking to have an outdoor in-ground pool? I don't know if I would recommend it for England weather given the fact that you'll be maintaining it more than you'll be using it. Upkeep keep is pretty steep and you'll only find the use in summer months.

Safeway of kids is also a factor.

In terms of investment and resale, there are more people that don't want a pool in the backyard than do (samll childre, non swimmers, cost of maintenance, elderly couple). So factor that in, in your decision.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

During our recent house search, we rejected a house because of pool in the backyard mainly for the reasons that njgal mentioned.. maintainance and safety! The house was just perfect but when it came down to deciding between the two houses, pool went in the cons!

YMCA pool works :D

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Thanks for highlighting the cons guys. I dread the maintenance part.

Re: swimming pool in backyard

Khatti being an expert can answer it better, but I think that value addition of pool is very subjective in nature. It would add value in property, but it also cuts your potential client based down.

  1. People who like your house, but not into swimming pools, would reject it cause the price is higher for them
  2. People with small kids would also not buy your property.

Pools are not like great kitchens or bathrooms that always pay back because everyone likes them and want them. Pools are very special feature and only attracts very special set of people.

Last thing is if people can only use it less than 35% of the times, they would not spend extra to buy a house with a pool. In Dallas, having a pool makes sense. In London (just like here in Seattle), having an outdoor pool makes very little sense and would not pay you an ROI
