Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

This is just a general question. I’m having a debate with someone who’s told me they normally give bags full of sweets and dates to guests who come to a wedding and it’s a pakistani tradition. I’ve never in my life seen anyone give goodie bags at weddings, anybody here able to give me some more insight into this?

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

yes. its called bidh.
traditionally, its dried fruits/nuts distributed to guests in small pouches after nikah. These days ... wedding favors are more variable and can range from some form of sweet to candles, soaps, little keepsakes ... etc ...

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Hmm. This is new news to me.

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Lmao. 2 people agreeing doesn’t make it fact. I’m gonna hold on for a little bit more before I wave the white flag :zobo:

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

^ It is a very established tradition. I don't think I've ever been to a muslim wedding (Pakistani or otherwise) where there wasn't some kind of "bidh" (even if it's just a date). Bidh is usually distributed post nikkah. Sometimes it's handed out but mostly these days it's already placed on the tables as wedding favours.

I believe it stems from sunnah, where dates were distributed following nikkah.

I think AndyPandy wins. I can't believe you haven't noticed it, unless you never attend weddings.

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Yep it is called biddh and consists of dates and other dried fruits but nowadays people have modernised it with maybe chocolates and sweets.

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Yes, thank you very much. Clearly I've won the battle. Accept defeat.

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Yup, some sort of sweet or favor is always distributed post Nikah and on the wedding/valima days as well!

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Not yet..

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

Yes, dates are distributed at virtually every wedding that has a nikah . You can add other stuff to it but dates are the main ingredient .

Okay. You win..

Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

We hydros just call it "chuaaray"...first time I heard the word "bidh" was here on GS, but yes, the others are right...it's an age old tradition...The grooms family distributes there little packages of favors following the Nikkah

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

same here chuahrey. I hated those things ... I just used to take out all the good stuff and leave the chuharye in there

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

I've seen kids carefully open up the fancy bidh boxes, eat the chocolates, close up the boxes all pretty-like....so that the next person to open it up either gets no chocolate or finds scrunched up candy foil. Lol, evil lil' geniuses.

Re: Sweet bags for guests at wedding?

We Urdu speaking or Karachi folks call it chuaaray too. I think bidh us Punjabi.

Same here! WE're punjabi but I've heard both terms being used interchangeably.

Also @Sentry, have you never been to a desi wedding? Just curious.
