Swami Vs Sami

Not talking about Adnan Swami (previously known as Adnan Sami).

In Arabic, Sami (Samee) is one of the name of Allah which means ‘One who listens to all / All hearing’.

Now, I was listening to this devotional song from Lagaan ‘O Palnhaare’ and there is this line:

Bhakti ko shakti do
Jag ke jo Swami ho
itni to araj suno

So does sanskriti Swami = Arabic Samee = All listening?

Re: Swami Vs Sami

swamii = all knowing = saaHib-e-'ilm [for religious scholars]

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Is is an adjective for Hindi deities or refers to particular deity?

Re: Swami Vs Sami

it's referred to as a 'title' for any learned person in religious affairs...like...Swami Vivekanand, Swami Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Swami Baba Rajneesh [the notorious swami who plundered millions]

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Isn't there a word 'Saami' in Hindi. There is this famous Hindu Sindhi poet 'Saami'. Whats the difference between Saami and Swami?

Re: Swami Vs Sami

i think it's just the variant roop-aantar in Hindi] of 'swami' like we have 'Khaamoshii', 'Khaamshii' and "Khamoshii' in Urdu.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Krishnaswamy and Palanisamy - does that answer the question?

Re: Swami Vs Sami

And KKF Urduswamy

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Swami arthaat maalik ya niyantrak. Jaise 'is zameen ka maalik kaun hai?' ko kahenge 'is bhoomi ka swami kaun hai?' Padmanabhaswami mandir bhi hai..swarn bhandar ko lekar charcha me ata rahta hai. Apne suprasiddha dharavahik 'Malgudi days' dekha ho toh usme ek charitra 'swami' yaad hoga. Kai saadhuo naam ke aage swamii lagaya jata hai, yaha aashay man par niyantran hai. Kai baar pati ka arth bhi swami hota hai..jaise Rawan Lankapati tha..matlab Rawan lanka ka maalik ya swami tha.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

We can't associate Hindu as a religion with Hindi. Though Hindi has vocabulary from Sanskrit and other languages & dialects and ancient Hindu text is written in Sanskrit but Bengali speaking Hindu, Tamil Hindu, Telugu Hindu etc are there. Almost all Indo-Aryan languages took vocabulary from Sanskrit in some form.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Yet there is a possiblity because Swami, Thakur words are used in praising Hindu dieties, as he is a Hindu, I think your relating Hindu and Swami is right in this way. Is there Sami in Sindhi? Sami was his caste title or pen name? He perhaps borrowed this name from Arabic.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

@KKF 'saltane shah alam, aj dilli ta palam' ka matlab kya hota hai...ek fb friend ne aaj status post kiya h

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Pen name as per article below:

Sami Chain Rai Bachomal

It was when he was about 30 years old that he came into contact with the ‘Real friend’, Swami (or Sami in Sindh) Meghraj by name. The Swami originally hailed from Ahamednagar of then Bhawalpur State and came to Sindh to live in the Brahmana Hemandas’ ‘Marhi’, or monastry, at Hathi Dar in Shikarpur. He was well versed in Vedanta and sanskrit kavvya. Chainrai benifitted greatly from his learning and studied Vedanta in the original Sanskrit in about ten years. Besides 'Sankara’s ‘Advaita’ (non-dualism), which forms the core of this poetry, he seems to have learnt for his Guru something about Nimbarka’s ‘Dvaitdvaita’ or ‘Bhedabedha’ (difference and non-difeerence which appears in his slokas on ‘bhakti’.
He had already read the Sindhi saint and sufi poetry and was conversant with Gurumukhi and Devanagri scripts in which the Hindu Sindhis wrote their language at that time. By the age of 40, he developed a great peotical power and composed verses, at once lyrical and mystical. This he did inn the name of his Guru, Swami Meghraj; 'Sami became his pen-name. He wrote the verses in Sindhi. In the Gurumukhi script, on slips of paper and went on depositiong them in an earthen pot.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

This refers to limitation of powers of Mughals in last years. In reign of Shah Alam (Mughal King / Might be title of Bahadur Shah), Mughal territory limited from Delhi to Palam. Palam was adjacent to Delhi (probably near Qila). Today, Palam must be an area in Delhi. @the_kaur can confirm further.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

He might be saying this in present context.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

what is present context BTW?

Re: Swami Vs Sami

Jat agitation for reservation No water left in Delhi due to Jat protest, schools closed, rationing begins - Times of India

Re: Swami Vs Sami

@muqawwee123 Palam is still a neighbourhood in Delhi.

present day Indira Gandhi International Airport is adjacent to the Palam Airport which was until recently used as domestic airport. now, this airport terminal is used for cargo flights.

Palam is a very congested residential area and it has a railway station called by the same name [Palam Railway Station].
@Anjul Sultaan Shaah Alam [NOT sultan-e-Shah Alam]. Muqawee has explained.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

@muqawwee123 Do you know how Amir Khusro met Hazrat Nizamuddin? It is interesting to know.

Re: Swami Vs Sami

No. But I know that he was in his 30s when he joined the saint.

BTW is there any link of Swami with Khusro.

It appears that Khusro is not popular among some quarters in India. What could be the reason?
