Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

:salam2:

Allah SWT! Said:

The People of the Book, instead of sticking to the plain Books of Revelations, and seeking to do the will of God, ran after all sorts of occult knowledge, most of which was false and evil. Many wonderful tales of occult powers attributed the power of Solomon to magic. But Solomon dealt in no arts of evil. It was the powers of evil that pretended to force the laws of nature and the will of God; such a pretence is plainly blasphemy.

This verses has been interpreted variously. Who are **Harut **and **Marut? **What did they teach? Why did they teach it? The views which commands itself to me is that of the Tafsir Haqqani following Baidhwai and the Tafsir Kabir. The word “angels” as applied to Harut and Marut is figurative. It means “good” men of knowledge, science (or wisdom), and power. In modern languages the word “angel” is applied to good and beautiful women. The earlier traditions made angels masculine, and applied to them the attributes which I have mentioned, along with the attribute of beauty, which was implied in goodness, knowledge, wisdom, and power.

Harut and Marut lived in Babylon, a very ancient seat of science, especially the science of astronomy. The period may be supposed to be anywhere about the time when the ancient Eastern Monarchies were strong and enlightened: probably even earlier, as Ma-ru-tu or Marduk was a deified hero afterwards worshipped as a god of magic in Babylon. Being good men, Harut and Marut of course dabbled in nothing evil, and their hands were certainly clean of fraud. But knowledge and the arts, if learned by evil men, can be applied to evil uses. The evil ones, besides their fraudulent magic, also learnt a little of this true science and applied it to evil uses. Harut and Marut did not withhold knowledge, yet never taught anyone without plainly warning them of the tribal and temptation of knowledge in the hands of evil men. Being men of insight, they also saw the blasphemy that might rise to the lips of the evil ones puffed up with science and warned them against it. Knowledge is indeed a trial or temptation; if we are warned, we know its dangers; if God has endowed us with free-will, we must be free to choose between the benefit and the danger.

Among the Jewish traditions in the Midrash (Jewish Tafsirs) was a story of two angels who asked God’s permission to come down to earth to come down to earth but succumbed to temptation, and were hung up by their feet at Babylon for punishment. Such stories about sinning angels who were cast down to punishment were believed in the early Christians also. There may be an allusion to such legends here, but much spiritualised ans we are expressly warned against dabbling in magic or believing that anything can hurt us except God’s will, and God is just and righteous.

What the evil onces learnt from Harut and Marut they turned to evil. When mixed with fraud and deception, it appeared as charms and spells and love potions. They did nothing but cause discord between the sexes. But of course their power was limited to the extent to which God permitted the evil to work, for His Grace protected all who sought His guidance and repented and returned to Him. But apart from the harm that these false pretenders might do to others, the chief harm which they did was to their own souls. They sold themselves into slavery to the Evil One, as is shown in the allegory of Goethe’s Faust. That allegory dealth with the individual soul. Here the tragedy is shwon to occur not only to individuals but to whole groups of peopl; for example the People of the Book. Indeed the story might be extended indefinitely.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

There are some strings attached to the story of Harut and Marut.

I read these verses some time ago and had some discussions but there is some background and lot of story portion is missing.

Jewish and Christian traditions sound interesting but there is still something missing.

Anyway thankyou for sharing relative information and this particular verse and characters mentioned herein.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Appreciated :hat: It is just a basic information however i’ll try to upload when i get hold on those missing strings

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

This verse always intrigued me and I longed to comprehend it properly. Here is one of the translations that make sense to me.

[QUOTE]

"And they pursue the course which the rebellious men followed during the reign of Solomon. And Solomon did not disbelieve; but it was the rebellious ones who disbelieved, teaching people falsehood and deception. And they pursue what was revealed to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. But these two taught no one until they had said: ‘We are but a trial, do not therefore disbelieve.’ So men learnt from them that by which they made a difference between a man and his wife, but they harmed no one thereby, except by the command of Allah; on the contrary, these people are learning that which would harm them and do them no good. And they have certainly known that he who trafficks therein has no share of good in the Hereafter; and surely, evil is that for which they have sold their souls; had they but known!"

[/QUOTE]

verse before this one especially 101 talks specifically about Jews or Ahl-e-kitab in general. So this verse talks about Jews who were conspiring against the Islamic state of Madina. This verse could be better understood if we could answer some key questions:
1) Why clarification regarding hazrat Suleiman (as) is provided here that he didn't disbelieve. What is the story behind it?
2) Here terms 'Shiateen' and'Malakeen' are used. Should they be used in literal sense or some secondary meanings should be attributed to them to understand the verse better. and why?
3) Who were Harot and Marot. and what did they teach?
4) Why references of Harot and marot and 'shiateen' working against the government of hazrat suleiman(as) are mentioned here? what is the connection

First of all, consider the first question

1) Why clarification regarding hazrat Suleiman (as) is provided here that he didn't disbelieve. What is the story behind it?
If you google 'Sin of Solomon', you will find lots of websites that talks about this topic. In short, it is alleged that hazrat Suleiman(as) sinned [one is idol worship]that eventually led to the downfall of his empire and led to rebellion and finally split of the empire in two. Quran tells us that Solomon didn't disbelieve but the ones, who rebelled against him and his son, disbelieved and they were the bad guys. and Jews of medina are actually following those rebels.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Google Translate

Tafsir Surah 2 (Al Baqarah) - Verse 102 Harut and Marut on (Al Qadi 'Iyad Al Qurtubi and At Tabari)

We regularly find in Qur’an translations :

"And they followed what the devils tell against the reign of Sulayman. While Sulayman was never disbeliever but devils: they teach people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels Harut and Marut in Babylon, but they did not teach anybody anything, they did first said: “We are nothing that temptation is not a disbeliever” They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah’s permission. And they learned what harmed them and they are not profitable. And they know, certainly, that he who acquires [the power] will have no share in the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they sold their souls! If they only knew! ’

[Sura 2 - Verse 102]

Such a translation, however, is totally erroneous in view of the reality of this verse and the belief of Ahl Sunnah for Us Angels, we will demonstrate in this article if Allah wills. This is bad translation had to the fact that there is a discrepancy in the interpretation of this verse among exegetes, and many of them were content to report non-genuine stories from the people of the book to comment, including Jews, who are renowned for their slander of any kind about the Prophets and Angels (that Peace of Allah be upon them all). Moreover, Al Imam Isma’il Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his New Year Bidayah wa Nihayah: "Many stories were reported about them (Harut and Marut), most of its original Israelite. ’

And thus of the QA î 'Iya Musa ibn al-Maliki (Allah have mercy on him) said in his Kitab Ush Shifa °:

"Most of the stories told on this episode from the books of the Jews and their intervention, as Allah mentioned in the first verse of this story in which they slander and accuse him of Sulayman disbelief. That’s why we refer to this subject that illuminates these issues and reveals, if Allah wills.

Firstly, you must know that there was disagreement on the nature of Harut and Marut, two angels Are they human beings or two? [If they are angels], are they two angels mentioned [in this verse]? Should we read “malakayn - two angels” or “malikayn - two kings”? Is that the “ma” in both Divine Lyrics verse 102 of Surah Al Baqarah: “what (ma) is down to the two angels Harut and Marut in Babylon,” "However, they did not teach anything to anyone (wa ma min yu’allimâni a h … adin 'is a particle of negation or so?

Most scholars believe that Allah (Exalted be He) experienced by men who have two angels taught witchcraft and explained as witchcraft is kufr. So, who learned witchcraft mécroyait and whoever believed abandoned because these two angels say in the Qur ° dn: “We are a temptation is therefore not a disbeliever” [Sura 2 - Verse 102].

So teaching men fall an instruction to warn them, that is to say, they said to one who comes to learn that witchcraft: "Do not practice it, because it separates the husband and wife not use magic as a plot, because this is witchcraft, avoids disbelief! "In this way, the work of two Angels fall under obedience and attitude in what is for them an order is not disobedience. It would be only a temptation for people.

Ibn Wahb reported that they also spoke in the presence of Khalid ibn Abi 'Imran case of Harut and Marut, saying they taught witchcraft, he said: "We innocentons (angels in general) of such a practice. “And one of those who were present then read the verse this way:” wa unzila 'alal malakayn - and what was revealed to the two angels “omitting the particle” ma “, but Khalid corrected by saying” wa ma unzila - it was not revealed them. "

So, here Khalid who, with his reputation and science, two innocent angels can teach witchcraft while others feel that this is their only condition enabled to explain to people that this is disbelief and a test from Allah. But how, in such conditions, the innocent does not they major sins and unbelief mentioned in these stories?!

The expression of Khalid: “It was not revealed them - wa ma unzila” means that the “ma” is here a particle of negation. And this is also the position of Ibn 'Abbas.

And for its part, Al Makki said that all this amounts to saying: "Sulayman did not disbelieve, that is to say he did not disbelieve practicing sorcery invented by demons, which were followed in this by the Jews, and it was never revealed two angels (wa ma unzila 'alal malakayn). ’

Al Makki, and Mika are Jibreel ° it that Jews accuse of witchcraft made in the same way they accused Sulayman this. But then Allah’s denials about it. It was also said that Harut and Marut were two men who learned witchcraft and that are demons who disbelieved, teaching men magic that Harut and Marut are [the city] of Babylon.

For its part, Al asan H [Al Ba Ri s] said that Harut and Marut were two non-Arabs among the people of Babil. He thus read: “wa ma unzila 'alal malikayn - and what was revealed to the two kings” instead of malakayn (the two Angels). In this reading, the “ma” is an affirmative particle.

This is also the reading adopted by 'Abd Ur Man Ra h Ibn Abza unless he identified the two kings as Dawud and Sulayman here. According to the latter view, the “ma” is then here a particle of negation. As Samarqandi and reports that would rather two kings among the Bani Isra ° he had belittled Allah (thus the “ma” is an affirmative particle). However, reading that retains the term “al malikayn” is rather rare.

In conclusion, the interpretation of the verse according to what has been selected by Abu Mu ammad Al Makki h is good because it innocent Angels, get rid of any dirt and purifies. Especially Allah called them by the words: “mutahharûn - pure”, “Kiram - noble”, “Barakat - blessed,” "that point to disobey the order of Allah. ". ’

And we also categorically reject the interpretation that these two beings of Angels. As rightly said Imam Abu ‘Abdi Mu h ammad Llah Al Qur’an Al An Ubi t s ari (Allah have mercy on him) in his Tafsir entitled Jami’ Li Kam pm It Qur ° dn: "All what has been reported about it is weak and far from Ibn 'Umar and others. None of this is true. This is certainly a word that the foundations [of belief] to the angels, who are sincere custodians of Allah (Umaña Llah u °) of His revelation and His Ambassadors (Sufara °) to the Messengers, refuted. "They not disobey what Allah their point and are strictly control what He commands. “[Surah 66 - Ayah 6]” They are honored servants who do not speak before Him and act on His commands. “[Surah 21 - Verses 26 and 27]” They exalt the night and day, relentlessly. "[Surah 20 - Verse 21] … ’

Imam Abu Al and 'Mu h ammad Llah Abdi Al Qur’an Al An Ubi t s ari (Allah have mercy on him) also said in the 15th point of the commentary on this verse :

“Here,” ma "is negative and not a relative pronoun. This (verse) is had to the fact that the Jews had said: “Verily, Allah has revealed witchcraft Jibreel and Mika ° he” Allah then denied it. In this speech, it was suggested that would be had [usually] back. So the sentence has the following meaning: "Sulayman did not disbelieve and this thing (sorcery) has not been revealed to the two angels. Rather, it is Shaya t în who disbelieve. They taught men magic in the city of Babil, [and among them were] Harut and Marut. “Harut and Marut are Shaya t în who are appointed in His Word:” It is rather Shaya t în who disbelieve. "

This is the best interpretation of this verse that can be found and it is the most authentic in relation to what has been said on this subject. And no other interpretation should be any attention.

Witchcraft comes from Shaya t în because of the fineness of their substance and subtlety of understanding [in this area]. And most of those who practice among humans are also women, especially when they have their rules, and indeed Allah (Exalted be He) said: "And against the evil of those who blow on nodes "[Surah 113 - Verse 4].

And the poet said: "I seek refuge with my Lord against those who blow … ". ’

As for the history of this verse is this:

Imam al-Rabi 'Ibn Anas (Allah have mercy on him) said: "There was a period in which, whenever the Jews questioned the Prophet on a point of the Torah, Allah was down a verse that allowed him to their reply. Seeing this, they came to say: "This man is wiser than ourselves on what was sent to us! ". They decided to ask him about witchcraft and discuss with him on this subject. So Allah revealed the verse: “…] and they follow the texts dictated by demons about the reign of Sulayman …].” ’ [Tafsir Abari A t T].

And Imam Malik Ibn Abd Ul Jurayj (Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Shaya t în taught witchcraft to the Jews during the reign of Sulayman and it is after this reign they gave themselves (massively) to this witchcraft. ’ [Tafsir Abari A t T].

And Imam Isma’il Suddî As (Allah have mercy on him) stated:

"[At the time of Sulayman] t the Shaya în accessed from heaven to places where they could hear the words of the angels on that later arise on earth …]. They then passed these comments to the soothsayers who then revealed to people. Once the soothsayers had realized that these things are realized and thus their confidence with respect to t în Shaya was well backed up, they began to lie to them about introducing that they did not heard, to add to every word true 70 additional words. However, these men maintained accounts and written about in the rumor spread among the Bani Isra ° jinns that he knew the unseen world (al ghayb).

Sulayman then sent emissaries to the people so that they meet all these stories. When this was finished, he placed these texts in a box that was buried under his throne, and no demon could then be approached without being immediately consumed. Sulayman then warns that those who claim that the jinns known the unseen world (al ghayb) would be put to death.

After his death, and once all the scholars who knew the case died, Satan appeared in the guise of a human being with a group of Bani Isra ° and he said, "I’ll give you a treasure that you n 'épuiserez ever! ’

They replied, "Okay! ’

He said: "So Dig beneath the throne of [Sulayman]. ’

He then walked with them there, and, while staying away (not to be consumed), told them where they were digging. [As they were astonished at his attitude], they asked him why he did not approach. [He ducked their question by saying] "I’m here in your hands, if you find nothing, then kill me! ’

They dug and found the texts in question. Satan told them: "It is this sorcery [recorded in these texts] that Sulayman exerted its influence on men, devils and birds. ’

And thus spread among the Bani Isra ° view that it Sulayman was a sorcerer, and Bani Isra ° It retained these writings until the arrival of Mu ammad h (that the Hi and the peace of Allah be upon him) and used them to controvert with him …] "[Tafsir Abari A t T].

These are the main gain knowledge about this verse, therefore we translate as follows:

"And they followed what the devils tell against the reign of Sulayman. While Sulayman was never disbeliever (mâ Kafara Sulayman), it is rather Harut and Marut devils who were: they taught the people sorcery, and it has never been down on the two Angels [Jibreel He and Mika °] (wa ma unzila 'alal malakayn) to Babylon. However, they did not teach anyone without their having first said: “We are nothing but temptation is not a disbeliever” they (people) learned with d them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by permission of Allah. And they learned what harmed them and they are not profitable. And certainly they know that he who acquires [the power] will have no share in the Hereafter. What horrible price for which they sold their souls! If they only knew! ’

And we conclude with this prayer taken from the Qur’an:

ربنا لا تزغ قلوبنا بعد إذ هديتنا وهب لنا من لدنك رحمة إنك أنت الوهاب

"The Rabbana tuzigh qulubanâ ba’da hab lana wa idh hadaytanâ min ~ ra h ladunka matan, innaka antal Wahhab - O our Lord! Do not turn our hearts after we have guided and spreads mercy on us, Thou art the Giver of course all grace (Al Wahhab)! ’

[Sura 3 - Verse 8]

pretty weird. you are calling harot and marot devils while this verse call them 'angels'. Moreover, they used to tell people before teaching them anything that 'We are nothing but a trial. so don't disbelieve'. Why would evil beings tell this to their people?

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Peace kchughtai,

Further interpretation refers ‘Harut’ and ‘Marut’ as ‘two ordinary man’ from city Babil who learned the magic and teached to others. That is why above member referred them as devils. In the verse the word ‘Angels’ is referred to Jibrail and Mikhail a.s. that they didn’t teach anything nor Hazrat Sulaiman a.s.
It is very interesting to read and :insh: i’ll try to post in details

.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

I think there is nothing special about 2/102, it is simply detail related to 22/52 etc.

The point made is that each time a divine messenger came to establish divine kingdom here on the earth, the opponents did their utmost by using various methods to derail their accomplishment.

The very same happened in case of prophet sulaiman.

The kingdom established under Aadam was derailed by iblees, Noah set up the kingdom and that was derailed after him, ibraheem set up the kingdom and it too was derailed later on. Each time the divine kingdom was derailed in the name of God by chiefs and kings using their mullahs ie their propped up religious leadership.

Each time Allah brought back his kingdom after it was derailed through various messengers that followed each other.

What people having ambitions for dominance used to do was attribute nonsense to Allah and his messengers and that is what they used to spread as the true divine teaching which masses over a period of time use to take as the true teachings.

Same we can see jews doing in case of Ezra ie they took him as a divine guide and attributed all sort of nonsense to him as from God himself. Even today we have christians claiming all sorts of nonsense in the name of God and jesus.

After prophet muhammad we have a lot of muslims claiming a lot of nonsense in his name. But just as Allah brought about truth to bear so he will in case of current situation ie he will not leave things as they are rather he will raise people with proper knowledge of his message and help them succeed against all odds.

Word MALAK has various meanings but more suited meaning here could be king or chief. It is kings or chiefs who conspire against the mission of God for which he sends prophets.

These kings wanted to spread lies about Allah and his messenger sulaiman in order to bring down the divine kingdom he set up.

In history if we look at teachings of jesus, they were same as we find in the quran but when constantine decided to use religion for unification of his kingdom, he brought changes in deen and used religion to replace it. At the end of khilaafah muslims also became victims malukiyat by muhaviyah which became worse and worse as the years passed by. Muslims kept going away from tyhe actual quranic teachings and so ummah since then has been suffering divisions and civil unrest and even wars.

Unless people learn sense and come back to islam according to the quran as their deen, there is no peace for them nor prosperity that quran promises. Just by turning islam from deen to mazhab ummah lost goodness both in sense of spirituality and material.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

^ On one hand, it is said that practicing magic is a sin and on the other it is believed that Allah expressly sent special angels to teach humans magic. what a paradox.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

^^^ Why it is paradox?

Next you would say that Allah created pork and wine still made consuming pork and wine sin. What a paradox?

Obviously, all source of knowledge is from Allah, including magic, and he gave them to people to test them. Allah introduced magic to human through 2 angels, no big deal.

Actually, there is no knowledge, be they good, bad, evil or ugly, whose source is not Allah. Neither any knowledge by itself has any power other than what Allah has associated power with them. Knowledge of all sorts is part of human test. Knowledge by itself is not good, bad, evil or ugly … rather it is made good, bad, evil or ugly for humans due to command of Allah, and all rewards or sins associated with them is also rewards or sins that Allah associated with them.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Three reasons that Harut and Marut mentioned in Quran were angels.

1: Any person with little knowledge of Arabic can read Quran and can say that Harut and Marut were Angels.

2: Most imminent translators of Quran whose Arabic (Fusa) knowledge was excellent compared to even many Arabic speaking scholars of Arabic, and they also had good Islamic knowledge, translated that Harut and Marut were Angels.

3 All knowledge is from Allah and it is Allah who gives knowledge to human using various means. If Allah wanted to give knowledge of magic to humans, he could have done that either through giving humans the knowledge directly or through Angels. Allah sent the knowledge of magic through Angles (as mentioned in Quran), no big deal or space for argument.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

No doubt Allah has created all things but when he "sent" someone towards people, it was always for their guidance. By your logic, we can also say that Allah sent true prophets and also sent false prophets to test people. Similarly, Iblis wasn't sent to the people. He was given leave so that people could be tested. Subtle but not a minor point. So kindly don't make wrong comparisons.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Who said that when Allah sent someone towards people, it was always for their guidance?

Is it not true that Allah gave permission to Iblis to misguide people?

Anyhow, when it comes to Prophet (AS), they are sent always for guidance (prophets remind, guide and do not put people on trial) ... and that is why Allah did not sent magic through prophets but sent magic through Angels (as magic was sent to put people on trial).

As for true prophets (sent by Allah) and false prophets (those who were not prophets but assumed role of prophet), obviously they are from Allah too, one lead people to heaven and other lead people to hell. It is up to people to use their elements of knowing given by Allah (intelligence, logic, rationality, etc) to determine who is true and who is false ... and that is test for humans.

Even appearance of Dajjal on this world would be from Allah (not any other creator as there is none)... or it would be Allah who would create and send Dajjal to this world ... and Dajjal would be test of Allah at the time he would appear. Dajjal would not come to guide people towards Allah, but he would come as trial of Allah. So, what?

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

From what I know, Harut and Marut are both angels in the literal sense of the word. Nothing figurative there. Their mission was to show people magic. Partially because at the time, they were claiming that Suleiman (AS) was practicing it. So one of the reasons to show/teach magic was to show the distinction between the miracles of the prophets and magic. What happened with the knowledge after they taught the people, after warning them not to misuse it was not their responsibility.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

They were sent to teach the people magic but they didn't teach anything before saying "we are but a test and do not disbelieve" what does that mean? I want to hear this.

Re: Surah Al Baqarah Verses 102

Before teaching magic, they declared that the knowledge they are parting is trial of Allah. When they said not to disbelieve, it means not to learn magic. That is all.

Now it was for humans learning magic had to decide to take that knowledge or not ... knowing that magic is a knowledge of trial.
