Re: Supreme Court Judgement at 2.15pm PAK time today
The words that will haunt Mushrraf in the future.
I will keep my word: Pervez
Islamabad, Sept. 27: Claiming he is a “democrat by temperament”, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has said he will not renege on his commitment to the Supreme Court to quit as Army Chief if re-elected for another term.
General Musharraf, who said he believed in the norms of democracy with all of its decencies and freedom, vowed not to go back on the assurance to the court just as in 2004. “There is a huge difference between 2004 and 2007. In 2004, there were compelling circumstances and no constitutional bar and, therefore, I had to continue with the two offices,” General Musharraf said at a reception organised by outgoing chief of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Mr Pervez Ashfaq Kiani last night.
“However, the circumstances today are different and I have given a commitment to the Supreme Court that after my re-election, I will leave the office of the COAS and I shall abide by it,” Musharraf, who candidly referred to his failed promise of doffing uniform in 2004, was quoted as saying by The News daily. n AP

Disappointing verdict. I find it very interesting that they dismissed the claims on technical grounds and not based on merit at all. A very very smart way of avoiding a very dangerous situation for them.
Though politically a 4-5 verdict would have been the most efficient manner in which to solve the crisis.
Regardless the verdict of the Supreme Court stands and the independence of the courts should not be questioned.
Lets see if Musharraf lies a second time though? The question is now will he be elected by the assemblies and will he shed his uniform?
Re: Supreme Court Judgement at 2.15pm PAK time today
If this judgment of Supreme Court had not come as it did, than most likely there would have been emergency, dissolution of assembly, or martial law.
If assembly was dissolved than there would have been new election where government would have made sure they work hard to win 2-3 majority and get into parliament changing any clause they do not like.
Result of this decision is also very interesting in another way. Once President Musharraf take over as person in power for next 5 years, PML (Q) would benefit a lot from that and might win huge number of seats. At present government and allies control around 60 percent of seats and need few more to make 2/3 majority to do whatever they like. I believe that most likely next general election would bring parties in government enough seats that would give them 2/3 majority to do whatever they like in next parliament. Probably we will see lot of constitutional changes in next 5 years by present government with 2/3 majority in parliament.

aaaaah i wish opposition leaders, lawyers and Justice Wajeeh Uddin had the courage like (and like Govt) to accept the decision and not question the independence of court. A hand of applause of you
Re: Supreme Court Judgement at 2.15pm PAK time today
^ What are the chances of PML (N) MNA's moving to PML (Q) in the next few weeks?
Brother, very good chance but ... but ... but ... I do not know. I think that in present circumstances PML (Q) would not entertain many from opposition, unless they join PML (Q) on PML (Q) terms. I have feeling that after Presidential election, all parties would see how many seats they can get in next general election. Most party are under illusion except PPPP and they might try to negotiate seats with PML (Q), but probably PML (Q) would not.
For presidential election Musharraf needs simple majority, and at present, I believe that government has around 60 percent of the votes.
Re: Supreme Court Judgement at 2.15pm PAK time today
Next few days could be very volatile in KSE. In the morning it was going down but jumped into positive when verdict came. I believe that in next few days there is plenty action expected in KSE index. if everything goes as expected and President Musharraf wins the election on 6th October than by that time, KSE index might rise by around 500 to 1000 points from today. Thus, for all in Pakistan I believe it is good time to make some quick buck :p
[Though if anything unexpected happens during this time than it is possible that KSE index might go down, so take decision with this in mind too. :)
PSO (at around Rs 360 a share) and especially OGD (at around Rs 115) could be good buys, as after general election petrol price in Pakistan might be going up substantially unless world oil price plummet from present level. There is possibility that PSO might get privatized in near future and that might increase its price too. What I believe, both shares at moment are quite undervalued (especially OGD) ... but than I could be wrong :)].
Re: Supreme Court Judgement at 2.15pm PAK time today
And there was me thinking that Mush was a democrat at heart.
Well Meray Bhai ... emergency and dissolution of Assembly is part of democracy (under Pakistani constitution). Martial law would have happened only if there would have been lot of turmoil once emergency declared or dissolution of Assembly happened. It is not democratic action but then Pakistanis mentally do not accept democratic actions easily. They do not take defeat gracefully or even Supreme Court judgment willingly :)
