superstitions and old wives tales

salams guppies

what r some of the common superstitions and old wives tales you have heard?

i dont really believe in them but its fun to know what they r sumtimes… u’ll be surprised how many of them have a scientific/cultural explanation..i’ll share the ones i know of…

hmmm

here’s some that i can think of right now

  1. if you are getting hiccups …hichkiaan… then aap ko koi yaad kar rha hae *

  2. if a black cat crosses ur path then its a bad omen

  3. raat ko ghar mein jharoo dena brings bad luck [story is k in olden days they dint have electricity so raat ko jhaaroo dena was not good as something valuable might mistakenly be swept away with the kachra]

  4. scissors ko khali hawa mein chalana will bring a fight in the house

  5. raat ko darakht k neechay kharay hona is not good [true coz raat ko darakhton se carbon dioxide aati hae which is not good]

i’ll post more as i remember…aap log bhee post karein *

(-: hinduism :-)

^there are a lot of superstitions in Islam as well as it is being practised nowadays....a lot of the rituals can be considered superstitions

came from other religions.. nothing to do with islam!

Another one.
If you spill milk its bad luck. or is it oil.

^^ its milk. thats where the saying "dont cry over spilt milk" comes from.

i know a few superstitions too:

wearing taweez brings good luck

asking some peer fakeer to do 'dhamm' to heal something

eating with ur left hand is 'bad'

etc etc

and best of all

When you are giving cash as gift at any occasion you have to give that in ODD amount like 51, 101, 2001, 1001 ..and i really dont know why? :)

Rasoolulah:saw: prohibitted to use left hand while eating. It is not superstition.

Is the topic about Islam and superstitions or just superstitions?

haha! Funny stuff.

What about walking under a ladder? I heard people say it brings bad luck or something? On the same account, if you break a mirror..they say it brings bad luck for 7 years? Funny.
And how about jumping over someone's head? People say it effects the person's height. Maybe that's what happened with me. :(

^^ :rotfl: lol..it musta happened to me too :bummer:

chappal ulti pari ho to nahoosat ati hai
jaanamaz khuli nahi chorni chhiye, shaitan us per namaz pherta hai...
raat bhooke sone se aantin badua deti hain
beebakoli (a churail) bachon ko utha ke le ati ai j dopheir main sote nahi

Never buy your husband shoes otherwise you'll end up fighting.

Is that because it’s a sign of disrespect?

This i have also heard from childhood. i was always taught that one corner of the janamaaz must be ‘turned’ - never ever leave an open janamaaz. Why is that? :konfused: Does it have a religious basis? i still do it to this day, i don’t leave a janamaaz flat ‘open’ if i am not using it. At the very least, i turn one corner if i am not using it.

Some others i have heard - don’t leave your hair untied after Maghrib because of jinns, and never walk under a tree after Maghrib. And also don’t open an umbrella inside the house - supposed to be bad luck. And this i ‘learned’ in junior high school - when walking on the pavement, don’t step on the cracks - that’s a stupid one but er i kinda believed it back then :o

Nadia - yaar they used to say naozobillah k jab chappal ulti pari ho to aap oopar aasman pe laanat bhej rahay hotay haen…and u can imagine why thats bad…so thats where the chappal thingie came from…

i have also heard the janamaz one u said and the hair and tree ones  and strangely enugh i always do act on it too heheh subconciously…hadnt heard the pavements one…hmmm

Bahubegum wow hehehe thats a funny one..i hadnt heard that b4 lolzzz…waisay thats so strange…coz a lot of wives buy shoes for their hubbiess…

Devilicousss aww the bilbakoli one is too cuteee heheheh

larkiP and CB hey guys  i heard abt that too…k if somene is lying down us ko phalang k [jumping over them] naheen jana chahiayy they wont grow…interesting huh

BoSS just superstitions but u can reply with whatever u want

AQ bhai yup u r right abt the left hand i heard that too…lekin i always wondered…what abt lefties???

Decent 6Chora yup u r right!! infact even when aap larki ko shadi mein jahez dete hayn its said k u shud give an odd number of joras n shoes etc…interesting…!!

NesCio whoa looook who’s here!!! where have U been :hoonh: nice to c u :stuck_out_tongue:

uzzybuzzy and nandulala yuppp u guys r right i heard that too!!

Khanzada yuppp haanji i heard that too heheheh waisay for some reason i am always cutting my nails at night lolz maybe i shud stop heheh!!

being left-handed is genetically determined. one can’t do anything about it.

That the Prophet used to eat with his right hand is merely because he was right-handed. For the same matter he could have been left-handed

irem, me fine shine. U tell? Pakistan mein ja kar sirf superstitions nazar aa rahi hain???

i always heard from my older cousins kay when u take ur shoes off and if one lands on top of the other, slightly overlapped, then means u will travel in the near future. lol its hilarious....

what if youve just had bath or washed your hair at night, youd need to leave it loose for a while to dry. I have my hair loose allday, but maybe ill start to tie it after maghrib from now on. Do you think its really true?
