It’s good for our skin. Our facial skin is exposed the most since I usually wear long sleeved and pants even during the summer secretly to protect my skin. I obsess about skin protection.
All I hear is it has to be applied and it’s important and that it has to be under face lotion.
One thing I don’t get is yes we should apply sunscreen under our makeup but we have to reapply every 2 hours(right??) and I’m out for 8 hours of the day. Mostly, hopefully indoors unless i’m going on site for work. I already have makeup on, so do I take the makeup all off and then reapply 1 tsp of the sunscreen on my face and then reapply all the makeup again? That’s a lot of work. Or do I apply the sunscreen over all the makeup and then reapply the makeup.
I’ve wanted to know how you all do it but felt like it was a silly question.
I'm not sure if this is the correct way to go about it but this what I do for my usual day-to-day routine:
- Apply moisturiser which has sunscreen (it has spf30)
- Apply primer (Lorac "I'm So Sensitive" Soothing Face Primer)
- Apply foundation (MAC Studio Fix Fluid, which has spf15)
- Finish it off with powder, (MAC Pro Longwear Compact pressed powder, which has spf20)
You can remove your makeup, reapply sunscreen and redo your makeup or you can apply a physical sunscreen on top of your makeup.
How can one have that much makeup in summer anyway I don’t see the point. It’ll just melt away together with your sunscreen. Whatever you do, though, don’t apply any powder products (apart from maybe a thin layer of powder to set your makeup if you need to), because reapplying sunscreen on top of it would just create an ugly, patchy mess.
^You’re quite right about that. Reapplying sunscreen on top of powder would create a mess!
There are powdered sunscreens though and it seems that these would be ideal for reapplying over makeup.
Someone recommended Eminence Defense Minerals Powder Sunscreen to me prior to my wedding for a slight glow. I quite liked it and having been using it ever since. It gives you a very nice, subtle glow and has spf30. It can be worn over makeup or by itself as a sunscreen.
^Sunscreens also protect against skin damage, which isn't always obvious and doesn't necessarily mean sun burn, and can result in skin cancer. Everyone needs sunscreen to protect against the risk of skin cancer, especially if one is out in the sun quite a bit. In addition to that, sun exposure also causes premature aging of the skin and dark spots.
Same here! Given the amount of damage the sun can do to our skin, I’m surprised more women don’t do it. You mentioned you’re out during the day…are you actually working outside? Do you wear a hat to shade your face/neck?
Have you looked into tinted sunscreens? Juice Beauty makes one with 20% zinc that’s great. The zinc gives you GREAT protection. How much makeup do you wear during the day? Like do you wear blush etc?
1 tablespoon for face sounds like A LOT! According to American Academy of Dermatology, you only need to coat the skin.
Are you serious? Skin CANCER doesn’t discriminate. Other than causing cancer, sun also causes the skin to age…meaning wrinkles, sun/brown spots etc.
If the threat of skin cancer isn’t enough for someone to start using sunscreen diligently, here is another visual that shows how bad the sun is for us. This truck driver never used sunscreen. At 69, look at the driver’s side of his face compared to the other side. This was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
It has nothing to do with getting darker since sunscreen doesn’t prevent getting darker, I hope people know that but I would prefer that this doesn’t happen to my face
The left side of the face when we drive is constantly exposed to the sun so that’s what happened to him after constant exposure without any sunscreen protection.
Obviously for south asian women it wouldn’t be such extreme damage but why not protect the skin?
Just remember to apply AT LEAST 30 minutes before you head out. :)
It needs to be reapplied every 2 hours if you're outdoors most of the day on a particular day is what i'm saying. It can't be applied one time in the morning and then you're home free for the rest of the day. I figured it doesn't work like that.

On a regular work day sunscreen first, emu oil, maybe primer(I know I should use it),concealer + foundation and that's it. No blush or contouring highlight stuff but applying over the makeup does nothing since it has to be under the makeup and directly on your skin to have any effect or do any kind of protection. How do you do it?
^^ I know, I was just making it a point that people need to apply sunscreen in the mornings at least 30 minutes before they head out.
I'm not talking about re-applying. Just to not put it on and immediately head outdoors.

Depends,i personally don't wear much make-up,if i have to wear then i go like hydrating moisturiser, sun screen. Now for make up at times i skip foundation instead dabbing concealer under my eye circles or blemishes. Kajal , gel eye linear and cream blush. If my skin tone is uneven, then i'll apply a light weight liquid foundation. That way, when I need to reapply sunscreen two hours later, I can do so easily.
I got some discoloration spots around my mouth and i’m working on getting my skin looking better but til then I have to wear foundation and concealer. Reapplying just seems expensive with wiping out after 2 hours.
Anyways, I guess the experts don’t agree as much on which should go first, sunscreen or moisturizer.
