Suicide Q

If someone chooses for him or herself capital punishment over life imprisonment, would that be suicide?

Re: Suicide Q

Hmmmm... interseting question. Technically no...philosophically yes.

Re: Suicide Q

no...atleast not in all situations...they cud do many other "things" other then commitin suicide

Re: Suicide Q

If I were you Ahmadji, I would choose life imprisonment, but your already married...so I am afraid I cannot help you.

Doesn't a judge get to decide in the first place?

Re: Suicide Q

Plea bargains and bargains outside the court where the prosecutors will not bring charges that can lead to capital punishment do give the defendant this choice. For example, a killer given a choice to give police the location of the remains of his victim in exchange for not being put to sleep.

Re: Suicide Q

After homicide I dunno if suicide is as big a sin though.

Re: Suicide Q

Femmy, its not about sin but anyway. That was just an example. The thread is actually inspired by the story of (Hazrat) Socrates who was given the choice to be banished or capital punishment through drinking poison, from which he chose the poison.

Re: Suicide Q

Hazrat Socrates? Did he play Soccer?

Re: Suicide Q

Yes, as far as Republicans are concerned he probably did. :cb:

Re: Suicide Q

bhaijaan, what does republicans have to do with Soccer and Socrates?

Re: Suicide Q

do u mean banished as in putting a stop to his views/thoughts?
because the jury sentenced him to death......

Re: Suicide Q

Kaleem Bhai, you never get my joke. I can’t type any slower. Suchi!

Sweatdreamz, The history is never crystal clear. I have read that he drank the poison before it was mandatory for him to take it, others say that the ruler at that time gave him a choice to leave the ‘civilization’ as it was known at the time, never to return or be put on trial which meant a death sentence. Some charge that he committed suicide by drinking the poison, others say he was a martyr of conscious and conviction. Anyhooo

Re: Suicide Q

yes, i think it would definately be suicide :)

Re: Suicide Q

madjee....i think socrates was cool to stand by his view. regardless..
he knew they would kill him.....so yeah its debatable if it was suicide or not....ill take the position that it is.

Re: Suicide Q

Didn't his wife give him the bowl of poison?
Abida Parveen sings about it:
"Mein taan zeher payalaa apay bhar kay peeta" or "mein taan apaay bhar kay zeher payala peeta". Some such thing. I think it is Buleh Shah's kalaam. Might be some other sufi.

Suicide is underrated anyway. We are all going to die. Why not do it on our own terms?

Re: Suicide Q

it is suicide.

Re: Suicide Q

When you know that the result will mean death, it is suicide.

Re: Suicide Q

A similar situation on which the US supreme court ruled a few days ago.

Assisted suicide upheld. Supreme Court rules attorney general overstepped legal bounds
and
How the Assisted-Suicide Ruling Affects Doctors’ Work

Mainly the question is if you know you are going to die in 6 months where after the second months you will not be able to move certain parts of your body, by fourth your memory will start deteriorating and fifth month the pain will be unbearable, would you take the pill and kill yourself?

In an old WW II movie where a guy shoots and kills his best buddy and co-pilot because he asked for it as he couldn’t save him from the burning plane in which he was stuck. His reasoning was that he didn’t want him to suffer the burns.

Re: Suicide Q

Does a soldier who stays to hold an undefenable position for the honour of his country/God/gods/race commit suicide? He knowingly takes an action that will kill him :p

Re: Suicide Q

Maddy, that’s different because there is a chance that you might survive, no matter how little. And the same reasoning given by people who argue against assisted suicide.
