Former JI chief Qazi Hussain escapes suicide attack in Mohmand | DAWN.COM

**PESHAWAR: The former chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Pakistan’s largest religio-political party, narrowly escaped a bomb attack on Monday as a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives near his convoy in northwest Mohmand tribal agency.

Shamsur Rehman Khan says Qazi Husain Ahmad, the former JI chief, escaped unhurt from the attack.

**Khan, who is a government administrator in Mohmand, says the bomber was wearing a burqa and had explosives strapped to her body.

The suicide bomber detonated her explosives after a vehicle with the former JI chief had passed, a government official said.

Another local official, Jamshed Khan, confirmed the incident and said “pieces of female clothes and hair found from the site make us believe that the attacker was a woman”.

Four people, including the bodyguard of the former JI chief, were injured in the attack, officials said. A vehicle was also damaged although Ahmad’s vehicle was not damaged or hit by the force of the blast.

Qazi Hussain was heading to Mian Mandi Ganghad, the main bazaar in Mohmand, to address a congregation of the party.

Mohmand is one of seven districts in Pakistan’s restive semi-autonomous tribal belt, where Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda-linked militants are said to have carved out strongholds.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud reportedly criticized the Jamaat-i-Islami and singled out Ahmad in particular in a recent audio message, accusing him of supporting Pakistan’s US-allied rulers.

Grapevine has it that the woman suicide bomber was actually a 'jilted admirer' of Qazi sahab, who was disowned in favour of JI's top slot decades ago.

Thank god he survived! What a tragedy that would have been! Well, tragedy for the businesses that would have been looted and gutted had he been killed and his followers came out on the streets to avenge him.

I remember prior to 9/11 I was invited once to a gathering of business people organized by Qazi Sahab where Mulla Zaeef was the key note speaker. When someone asked why Afghan Taliban government used state persecution against people who in the opinion of state were not good muslims.. at first they denied. Once some examples of non bearded, music-cinema watching muslims were presented to them they resorted to threats. Their reaction was that all this is according to Quran and Hadees.. and people who are opposing these measures are Quran-Hadees deniers.. in other words Kafirs.

I have seen Qazi saab endorsing state violence against muslims who in the opinion of Qazi-Afghan state of that time were not good muslims. JI has always defended their militant wing "Jamiat" who for years have used violence to settle theological differences..

Little did Qazi saab know at that time that this support of violence to settle theological differences will one day haunt him also. They rightly say in Urdu:

"Jaisi karni wasi bharni...."

What I am seeing is some kind of approval and no condemnation of this suicidal terrorist act by very same people who condemn, scream, moan and preach against this heinous crime everyday on this forum.

If suicide bomber kill a thief/rapist people would say it is wrong way to serve justice. If attack on Islamic group somehow it could be justified with some wit and logic.

When Malala was attacked these same people went into denial to the extent that maualna diesel even said that there was no significant injury to her and all sorts of conspiracy theories were concocted by these people. So why shouldn't we believe that this was also a drama staged by JI? Just like the "Malala drama"
