I watched that one starring Samita Patil (Dikhai diye yun ke bekhud kia is my favorite song)... I had a DVD having to movies.. Bazaar and Ijaazat. Ijaazat is also a wonderful movie

Its a filty masala movie. Can’t digest it. I think Mani Ratnam did produce good art movies which were commercially successful like Roja and Bombay.

Maachis was not mainstream I think. There are too many songs in it like mainstream, but the story and treatment was different.

The last three can be argued to be outside the realm of parallel cinema but I consider them in the alternate/arthouse category nonetheless.
