It’s not that religion needs to be kept away from gvmt. Saudi Arabia runs fine. Iran runs fine. The problem arises when people try to introduce “modernization” into an already perfect ageless, timeless legal system. Islamic law is really simple and straightforward. People corrupt it, and try to become judges of something they need not be judges of. Obviously, if you’re in an Islamic country and someone’s making out in the street - the gvmt has a right to say, “Stop, that’s gross. Prove you’re legally married.” But when people try to go out of their way to prove something (random couple sitting in park doing nothing) - then you create problems.
My point is - it’s always one or the other. Religious or secular. You can’t mix the two.
