Allah (SWT) has given men and women equal rights, but has not made men and women of equal physical strength and pehaps mental too, to an extent. This does not mean that Islam puts down women or does not think well of them. Islam has taught us to always respect women, treat’em nicely, and has given women, as mothers higher status than fathers (or something of that sort).

**Many of us are not comfortable with multiple wives and it should be limited to our personal opinion alone. Islam does allow a man to have up to four wives so long as he is able to treat them all justly and provide for them. He does not need his first wife’s permission in order to marry 2nd, 3rd, or the 4th. **

I have been perusing the subject for a while, and I found a nifty little hadith that talks about Ali (R) and Fatima (R)'s marriage. Ali (R) had recieved marriage proposals from at least 1 family to my knowledge (for some reason, I think there may be two - memory is a bit foggy since I mix up these ibn this ibn that type names).

The Prophet had asked Ali (R) not to marry them, and that if they did, he would facilitate a divorce between Ali and Fatima - reason being that Fatima was not comfortable with the idea of a sukhun.

The words of the Prophet go to some extent as “What hurts Fatima (R), hurts me”.

So, you do need the permission of the first wife. Polygamy has the potential to foster a lot of “What was wrong with me that he married another?” type feelings.

Much like the feelings that a girl gets if her partner cheats on her.

So its only common sense that the healthy approach to polygamy is to ask the first wife about it. I actually came across some commentary on how this hadith is not publicized much. I can imagine. Arab men would be in a bind.

I heard Allah’s Apostle who was on the pulpit, saying, “Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don’t give permission, and will not give permission unless 'Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me.”**

As long as you have informed her of alternative, its her who has to see what works for her. Move on. There are bigger things in life, such as buying a better cell phone

cell phone, what is it usefull to? I have internet that is enough…
