Stupid wireless usb adapter

I’ve a D-Link DWL-G122 Wirless USB adapter. It was working fine until I unplugged it this morningf. I’m trying to connect it again, but it doesn’t seem to co-operate. Ugh I hate computers sometimes.

The router seems to be working fine cuz i’m connected to the internet using the computer that’s connected to it. It’s my stupid computer that won’t connect to the internet (the one with the usb wireless.)

Please help. :frowning:

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

Make sure the Local Area Connection in network connections is not disabled in your computer that has the wireless card because that’s what happened to me once. I was about to uninstall the card and install it again on my laptop and then I realized that somehow my sister had disabled the Local Area Connection :smack:

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

It's not disabled. :(

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

where are all the techies when you need them?

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

I don't think enabling the LAN adapter has anything to do with the wireless connection ... infact I disable the LAN adapter when its not in use ... I remember reading somewhere that it is recommended to do so ?

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

i think i know what might be the problem when you unplugged the device did you take the proper procedure to do it? or did you just pull it out? Sometimes when you just pull it out the computer thinks that the device is still present at the port and will not detect it.
1. try another usb port
2. if that did not work then plug it back into the port it was originally in then look for a safely remove icon in your taskbar and diconnect the device from there remove the device then and wait 30 sec and plug it back in. it should now detect now and should be good to go.
you can also leave the device pluged in and reboot the machine see if that helps.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

^ hmm .... you are right ... that could be one reason

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

CB just call D-link tech support...they are open on weekends too...i had few problems with my wireless D-link and their support was helpful...there can be many reasons why ure not connected.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

Yay! I figured it out on my own. It probably wasn’t the ‘proper’ way of doing it, but I disabled the WEP and I was connected instantly. Later I got help from DM (thanks DM!) and set the firewall.

Mansoor, I usually unplug it by ejecting it from the taskbar. The computer was off, so I unplugged straight. :-\ I had tried another port but it didn’t work. I even reinstalled the driver and all. Nothing worked.

JP, I thought of that, but I didn’t know how long I’d be in the queue on hold. :bummer:

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

OMG! … this is why there are so many breaches of security … people will do anything to get things to works :bummer: … that’s why they say that ‘There is no patch to _ _ _ _ _ _ _’ *sigh … Kya ho ga maira Security field mai …

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

CB, now you and everyone else in your neighborhood are connected. Good job! :hehe:

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

TofiBaba, don't worry I got that covered. :-p DM helped me with the 'security' stuff. It only allows the computers in my home to be connected.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

I was gonna say, it was the WEP encryption that was not letting you back, if you remove the adapter from PC, and put it back in then you have to type in the 26 digit security code on the Wireless LAN control panel thingi.. And all should be fine after that.. Or of course you can, as you did here disable the encription altogether to get back on the network.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

so.. gizzy.. now that her encryption is disabled…

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

CB, how do u only let computers in ur home to be connected? Please share the knowledge. Sounds like something I can use and can help with clients.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

^- and you really think she will tell you her secret

faizy you live somewhere near her?

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

She should. It can't be such a proprietary solution. See my post on the tin-can Wifi AP.

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

Haha my secret? I don't know the abc's of networking. DM helped me. :o

I probably don't even know the right terms....but it has to do with MAC filters. There's an option that says "Only allow computers with MAC address listed below to access the network".

ps. It was within the Advanced tab, under "filters".

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

^-- Tofi: well, if you really looking for one such solution, then I also have one for you..

The things you can do is:

  • disable DHCP
  • dont broadcast the SSID
  • add the MAC address of every PC connected to the router in the list of allowed connections

Re: Stupid wireless usb adapter

^ umm yeah, that. :o
