Re: …Studying Bible…
Okay, tell me have you read the bible?
Re: …Studying Bible…
Yes, I have…some chapters, not comlete, when was 18 years or probably younger. Got a copy from British Council in Karachi.
Before that I read Quran with meanings and explanation. But I dont think it was necessary.
Re: …Studying Bible…
No. assimilation is something, like if i go to Saudi Arab, I cover myself head to toe, if I were a woman, and even if i dont think it is OK. To me, it is bad. And I wont do this in Saui Arab, at any cost, which might mean that I wont ever go to Saudi Arab. I am not advocating this type of assimilation.
And I also dont consider taking something from a ‘lesser’ culture. Unique cultures r unique in their growth in some partcilcular evironment. How can we judge them as greater or lesser. But there r things, that we can analyse them, and decide if they would ever work in our society.
For instance, traditional or extended family…works great in agriculture based socities, where whole family owns one mean of livelihood. Maynot work in wage based economics where a person is independent from family.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
Anyway, tell me have you studied the bible?
Re: …Studying Bible…
**
That is true. However, you may want to ask yourself the question, are wage based economies the result of cultural and religious values promoting independence and agri based economies the result of religous and cultural values promoting extended family systems? Afterall, the west was also once an agri based economy. Therefore, they did NOT move towards greater regard for individual rights BECAUSE they were living in wage based economies.

Re: ...Studying Bible...
I belive cultural and religous values r outcome of environment, population survival demands (and hence the mode of economy, meeting that demand).
Since some ppl want to be independent in Agriculture economy, they wont open a soup factory to do that. Industrialization is not the effect of civil rights movement, but one of its natural causes. Respect for civil and personal rights did not emerge from the philanthropy of foundering fathers of this nation, but rather a common sense requirement for the best efficiency of the production means. This would explain why business in USA adopts more and more gay friendly rules and regulations, but the USA neocon govt is moving in the other directions. Same goes for civilian rights to use drugs, end their lives, without any govt interference.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
Thanks for sharing your beliefs with me. So, have you read the bible?
Re: …Studying Bible…
So what caused western industrialization in your opinon?

Re: ...Studying Bible...
Hi Shikra,
So how is the course going? Did you sign up?

Re: …Studying Bible…
Hi lostsoul,
Sorry, I missed this post and kept asking you the same question. Did you read the old or New? Which chapters do you remember best? Just my observation, but that seems like an awfully young age to read such difficult texts. Have you ever thought about reading them again? Can I ask if youre an atheist?
regards,
bob
Re: ...Studying Bible...
^^ it was difficlult, and to quote great comedian George Carlin, full of spooky language.
I remember noticing long stories, and moral lessons, etc. Nothing much.
BTW, Bible is adult material. I won't recommend anyone reading it at tender age. But then again, Quran is too. The first time, I read verses telling what happened with Yusuf and Zulekha, it was for adults.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
Shikra, I think you should definitely read bible. In this way you will appreciate Islam even more and you’ll thank God that you were born in a Muslim family.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
^ Just curious, how so? I have heard Christians say the same thing about reading the Quran.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
Quran is literal word of GOD not a watered down version of God’s word like today’s Bible is. The Bible is a collection of writings by many different men. It is really easy to find flaws in modern bible if read by any open-minded reader. That’s why I want Shikra to read it so he can appreciate Quran even more. Off course you will find my opinion biased and I can understand that.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
agent samith pai, if you read with an open mind, even the quran wont hold any value. i mean why would an open minded person believe in gods and angels and all..
Re: ...Studying Bible...
Queer paijaan, there is a difference between having an open mind and being an atheist.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
The Christians I know who said they found strength in their faith after reading the Quran have said it is because of two things: the way the text jumps around from one subject to the next without reason and a comparative lack of love, compassion and tolerance (except toward Allah and Muhammed.)
BTW, the Quran may be the literal word of Muhammed (assuming those who put it together were able to transcribe the EXACT words of an illiterate man and assemble them decades later), but it is not the literal word of God.
Re: ...Studying Bible...
^^ And bible has not mention of blood, murder and destruction?
Re: …Studying Bible…
hmm I donno what exactly you mean by saying quran not being the literal word of Allah SWT…the knowledge the book has testifies for itself… it has talked about things that scientist have discovered now and are still trying to discover… the book is a miracle itself… and I don’t think illiterate would be a right word to use for Prophet P.B.U.H. I think he is the Prophet of Allah SWT and being the superior source of knowledge there was no one better than him to be his teacher.. his knowledge comes from Allah SWT .. the same way other prophets like Jesus didn’t go to school or a madarsa to seek knowledge…
Re: …Studying Bible…
There was a reason I used *comparative * as an operative word.
