** ISLAMABAD, June 18: A Pakistani student, Samad Khurram, refused his Harvard University scholarship award presented to him by the US Ambassador Anne W. Patterson.

The student refused the award during a function organised by the Roots College International at the National Art Gallery on Wednesday in protest against the recently carried out American attacks on Mohmand Agency.

The US ambassador regretted these attacks, terming them a “terrible misunderstanding”, and refuted the notion that the student was refusing the award, maintaining that currently there were 5,400 Pakistani students studying in America.

The entire hall resounded with thunderous clapping for the student, who was later on restricted by the management from talking to any mediaperson.

In her speech the US ambassador, Anne W. Patterson, underscored the need for “people to people ties” to strengthen the relationship between Pakistan and the US.

“There is a myth that American universities are hesitant to accept students from Pakistan,” Ms Patterson told graduates of the Roots School System who received private scholarships to study in the United States and other countries. “All together, 5,400 students from Pakistan studied at US colleges and universities last year,” she added.

Congratulating the management of the Roots School System for “twenty years of outstanding service in educating young people in Pakistan,” the ambassador said she was impressed with Roots students who earned full scholarships to study at selected universities such as Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dartmouth.

“With your educational opportunities, you are the natural future leaders in whatever profession you may choose,” Ms Patterson told the students. She urged them to “focus not only on getting top grades but also on broadening your vision and finding how you can best serve society after you obtain your degree”.—Online

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

OK, and have we seen any case where a student has reused to go to a wahabi madrassah due to the 1,000+ Pakistani soldiers they have killed?

Samad Khurram....we salute you!!!

It's a big slap on the face of illegal President...this young man showed the condemned leader how to stand above your self interest....no doubt would have been a sight to watch when the audience applauded him in front of the American ambassador....

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

Great work Samad.

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

.

Do you honestly think your argument is coherent with the subject matter of this thread? Samad
did an astounding job by refusing that scholarship/award from a foreign country that violated our
national pride by having no regard for the international borders and is responsible for the murder of Pakistani soldiers on Pakistani soil. This is a matter of ideological perspective, and yes there must be many who belong to the Madrassa-class, yet they resist the Madrassa mentality. You do not undermine the appropriateness of a rightful act by counter-arguing about another rightful act that is yet to happen (in fact, it may have already happened many times over i.e. resistance from many against the Madrassa mentality).

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

that's a good sign!

what happened to so called freedom of speech!

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

Just dramatics. He made a point but so what?

Paki govt is still ruin by the crooks and they're run by the commanders from abroad.

Seems more of a colony now than ever before, with the occasioal emotional stands such as samad's.

Forgotten and not even though about in the whole mess is rge fact that everyone knows good higher education has to be abroad, not in Palkistan. Nobidy even questions that. The word for this mentality in colonial english is coolee.

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

What a way to make a protest!

Samad's articles against Musharraf and his illegal rule are also a noteworthy.

When we have home grown leaders in making for future such as Samad who needs Bilawal Bhutto Zardari...a person who could get full scholarship in Harvard on his own merit...and yet does not take it against his principles....please do not undermine it as an occasional emotional stand...this is new Pakistan...and we should be proud of Samad...

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

^ not sure if you missed my main point or I didn't phrase uit right.

Why is harvard and anythinbg abroad the benchmark for success?

Its the institute's management who restricted him, probably they didn't want to indulge in politics.

Is Jamshoro University some benchmark? Probably Karachi polytechnic may be churning out better students. Institute like Harvard is globally recognized, we are not talking about some community college in US, its "Harvard".

may be because Wahabi terrorism madrassah don't charge US$20,000 per semester :p

Re: Student refuses Harvard scholarship to protest Mohmand attack

Good job Samad Khurram. He has shown that ordinary people value the lives of their soldiers more than so called General Mush.

mashallah …we are proud of u ..wish our leaders were gud in showing their displeasure regarding us policies in our region..:jhanda:..

So in your mind, money is the deciding factor and not the deaths?

Here are some of his articles in Harvard’s Crimson

Thats one of the points of taking up/declining Harvard scholarships (price, prestige). Besides no one really conducts "granting of scholarship" in madrassahs the same way, so your whining was useless, sorry.
