Once you’re past a certain age it does not change on it’s own. I have to be conscious of how I enunciate, all the time. And there are still times when you mess up despite knowing the correct pronunciation.

I think it isn’t the same for everyone though. Some of us immigrants are more comfortable with the language because we went to English medium schools back home. Vocalizing our thoughts comes easy and our accent is the only flaw our speech has. We don’t have to deal with learning a new language in our 20s.

Then there are those who didn’t go to those fancy schools. Speaking without an accent is the least of their worries. They have to learn a whole new language, which is a far greater challenge than just changing your accent.

And some people just don’t get to practice that much or are too scared to be labelled as wannabes.
